"If You're Good Enough, You Will Climb"
I get that it's true.
So, my question is.
What do I have to do to win when I've 2 or more feeders on my team?

These are just my own thoughts, but do what you can to stop the feed / tilt :). There have been many a time I've personally been hyper tilted, but a friendly word / encouragement has helped me cool down and focus resulting in a win. Just my own experience share.
Kind words don't stop people from feeding. Especially now that the games are over in 10 minutes with pretty much zero chance for a comeback. Kind words do nothing.

Sorry to hear thats your experience. I would counter by saying kind words also don't hurt. One of those rare cases of 0 downside and all the potential upside. Vice versa, biting vitriolic words have a small upside and incredible downside. Something to think about :)

Yeah, they don't hurt, but they aren't helping either. Words won't give anyone more skill.
A strong mentality is one of the most important things you can have. It doesn't give you more skill, but a strong mental game helps unleash the skill you already have. If someone's feeding/doing poorly, sometimes they just need some help with their mental game.

But it doesn't matter. If you already fed the enemy you'll get oneshotted anyway. This isn't season 4 where you could make a comeback from a seemingly lost game.
Victory becomes less probable, but it's never over. The goal when climbing is to increase your odds of winning and decrease your odds of losing, all actions matter even if they only effect your game odds by half a percent.
You can only do what you can do to increase your odds, such as being positive and playing your best. Similarly you should avoid doing things that decrease your odds, such as being negative.
As for the things you can't do anything about ignore then. Because by definition there is nothing you can do about them.
Idk why people keep saying this.
Comebacks happen plenty enough. The REAL thing people are noticing is that, comeback or not, games are shorter in general.
Maybe not on a micro level, but a kind word can help a little. Someone might be more willing to listen to you (someone actually switched to blue trinket the other day when I asked politely!), or they might focus on the game instead of flaming another person (too much typing can definitely lower your APM).
There is definitely a chance that a kind word can help even the smallest bit. Give it a shot and try having a consistently positive attitude. It might take awhile, but you will definitely notice the difference.
But you will never see it if you are determined to stay pessimistic. If you want to see change, you need to work for it, and you're the only consistent factor in your games.

90% of the time I'm either positive or simply mute my toxic teammates, but there are games where i'm extremely tilted. Today for example in a game our MF was borderline inting. We asked her nicely to try to play more safe, but she was still running around, getting caught while spamming laugh nonstop. I was basically one step away from ragequitting. Tell me how to deal with people like that. ;/ I don't think any amount of kind words can help.
It's not going to help every time, I don't have that much faith in humanity. Words won't cure trolls (I'm pretty sure if she's spamming laugh while doing that, she was inting. Or just didn't care, really).
You got to look out for when it counts. That one guy who made a couple misplays and is beating himself up. The top laner who accidentally built a spirit visage against a full-AD team. Tell them that you'll have late-game, tell them to grab a deadman's plate for sick ganks.
I'm not precognitive, I can't tell you to handle every situation. Hell, for all I know, being positive will only help other people play better 5% of the time. But you know what?
The one person that a good attitude helps you the most is you. A good attitude can make or break a game. Hell, there are games where I lose and I'm having a good time because the enemy team is using some superior strat to mine and I respect them for it, or I'm having some decent banter with them. Not everyone can say that.

I'd say you're doing fine. I don't think anyone is 100% tilt-proof anyway. Don't let players like that MF keep you down. Let it sink in after the game then get back up, keep that chin up, and go kick some ass!
Yeah, they don't hurt, but they aren't helping either. Words won't give anyone more skill.
But kind words theoretically won't tilt someone even further :)

To the contrary, they do. For example, not to pick on Yasuo players, but...
Yasuo: (dies) gg im done Me: We can still win this Yasuo: lol, this team
The reason is that players who rage or grief or give up when they tilt are toxic. Like playground bullies who see their smiling peers as taunting them, they see nice comments as sarcasm or insults because that’s how they understand human nature. They think everyone is a jerk like them since, well, projecting is part of being a jerk.
That’s why nice-ness alone cannot drive this breed of toxicity out. If we want to remove its pernicuous effect from the game, then it must be identified and punished like the more obvious misdeeds of flaming, or running it down mid.

In your Yasuo example, the yas player isn't in any worse condition than he was before o.o. Sure the kind words didn't help, but it also didn't worsen the situation (unlike telling him to uninstall for instance). I also don't want to get into the minutia of all this, but dropping that ban hammer (aka negative punishment via operant conditioning) is actually the less effective way to encourage behavior. The better way is positive rewards conditioning (rewarding when positive behavior is shown). The research is fascinating :), did most of my undergrad on this stuff.

I appreciate your engagement and expertise. Perhaps lay ignorance blinds me to wisdom that your argument may hold, but many players who grief because they tilt both tilt and grief because they’re just toxic. Without myself getting into psychological minutiae, the consensus of the research community is that there’s no point in trying to change them, whether through nice words over chat or any incentive system. Quickly and accurately finding and removing these players is all anyone can do.
That’s what I want to know about. What plan does Riot have for them? At even very small concentrations in the playerbase, they can regularly ruin everyone’s games. I hope you agree that the purpose of banning them is important.

That I'm ill equipped to answer :), but if I were to guess (and I'm serious here this is an extreme guess) would be to push the community to take collective responsibility for ~~toxicity ~~ "disruptive behavior" (better terminology. Its better at describing whats going on imo) together by providing tools and systems to engage. Again to draw on examples from the boardgame / tabletop arena, raging in those games is drastically reduced because of checks from social pressure. If we could somehow translate that shared responsibility & "social contract" to the League community where it is our collective responsibility to call out toxic behavior and not engage, that IMO is a great solution. And to call it out, yes the game would need to support systems to allow community engagement. Thats where things like Honor and using honor ranking in Clash tournaments comes in. I love their inclusion of an honor floor in that feature and hope to see more of that in the future.
Again to remind, these are all wild guesses :). I in no way have any clue whats happening next. Just my own thoughts. However my thoughts are heavily influenced by my convo time with Zanytomato who gave a GDC talk about this exact thing (link below). Its just the slide deck, and hopefully the youtube video will be up later, but that talk did a great job breaking down disruptive behavior in online games and some design frameworks on how to tackle it. I'd encourage people to read it.

This is bullhicky tbh. The experiments only prove that some positive reinforcement is better than some negative reinforcement. As It's_ impossible to objectively weigh a negative or positive event_ therefore you can never get say that one has more effect than the other.
E.g. cutting off someones leg when they press a red button is going to be more effective of a lesson than giving them a thank you when they don't. But we have no way to weigh these events to be equal in negativity and positivity.
One thing we can say is that the whole human brain is designed to remember negative experience more vividly and strongly.

The research goes deeper than that, but again I don't want to get into the minutia of it all since I don't feel like typing out a peer reviewed essay lol. If people are interested in this area though go check it out! Its an interesting space of psychology

You've obviously never played League.
"Hey how's it going, everyone have a nice day?"
A common response.
"Go fuck yourself, I'm running it down mid F*ggot". (also please note this is an example. I don't promote or encourage hate speech)
^ This is what I expect from the game, nine times out of ten this is the environment the game fosters.
Despite my better judgement I still like the game and the cool people I've made in those 1 in 10 games. (Which is a testament to them, not your game)

Thats tough to swallow since I've been playing actively since beta (and yea I suck compared to how much time I've put in, but thats another topic). But I agree its a hard time when you get those responses. That being said do I personally blame the game for getting those responses? No (now keep in mind I'm biased lol). I blame the individuals and hope that the game can provide a positive influence to help them. By perpetuating the toxicity I'm making the problem worse, not helping it. It would be like adding oil to an oil spill rather than trying to clean it up (to use a crude metaphor).
That being said do I personally blame the game for getting those responses? No
Then you've given up on the problem. You can't change the individuals so if you're not willing to change the game systems that handle them then there is no recourse left. You've resigned yourself to accepting this problem forever until you're willing to change the punishment system to deal with these people.

I don't blame a system when, ultimately, the responsibility is on people and society to shepherd change. That may be overly optimistic or sheltered of me I will admit, but I never expect a system to singularly create behavior or societal change. Rather its a combination of my small individual efforts combined with systemic change that creates sustainable positive growth. Its my responsibility as a person to do what ever small or little act I can to fix the root problem, in this case by showing kindness and empathy towards the people I'm playing with & against.
To bring it to a really personal place, when I was younger one could have argued it was the "school system" that caused me to battle depression & suicidal thoughts. However, it was a small group of people (couple teachers and a new friend) who took the responsibility upon themselves to combat the root causes of that depression (in my case loneliness and lack of self worth). It was them, not the system, that helped me stabilize.
Again, I'm not saying the system can't be changed to make this work easier. That absolutely needs to and is being done (honor, reporting tool, matchmaking, etc). However, recusing yourself from the responsibility of combating the negative symptoms of life that manifest in toxicity by blaming the "system" is a bs move to me.
Sorry for being so inflamed by this (and taking it to a very personal story), but I feel very strongly about topics like these. We all have to step up and take responsibility for our own part of the solution, whether it be in a game or in life.

Sad to hear that being kind is equated to giving up your dignity :(. I certainly don't think so, rather I think its a mark of maturity.

Yeah, but you’re a nice person. Lots of people who feed aren’t nice. They’re nasty people who rage at small problems and at anyone who talks to them while they’re angry. What the OP is really asking is: what do you think could or should be done to hinder their spoiling their team’s efforts and taking the satisfaction from wins?

Nice people tend to help make more nice people through their actions :). It never hurts to share a kind word, and you never know! It may go a long way, certainly did for me :).

It does, though. If you say something nice when you don’t mean it just to get someone to stop feeding, it feels forced and fake. If they say something mean back, then it hurts even more. The problem isn’t people who leave lane 0/3 but the ones who then give up or grief the game.
It hurts the competitive integrity of soloqueue and makes me dread having a player like that on either team each time I click “Start Queue”. It would be nice to hear that you’re doing something to address that. If so, then what?
Clearly he meant a genuinely nice thing.
Saying “nice job” after you missed your ult isn’t really a nice thing to say.
Here's the thing: You're a Rioter. It takes a damn fool to int right in front of your face. Even if you use the same reporting mechanisms as the rest of us, it's like stealing from the cookie jar with your mom looking dead at you. Who on Earth would be so brazen about doing something they know they aren't supposed to?
For normal players, the minute someone even says something slightly disrespectful in chat, the whole game turns into an e-peen contest over who can intentionally lose the game the hardest or not care about losing the game the most. The experience is miserable and it traps people in certain elo ranges when perfectly winnable games are lost because two other randoms on your team are fighting. That's the worst part about it. I don't even say or do negative shit most of the time, but my teammates will get into it with themselves and then int and lose the game with me going along for the ride, regardless of my play in bot lane. Hell, the most recent time was when my mid laner got into a spat with my jungler over something that didn't even concern my mid laner. This shit sucks for the rest of us. I don't think Rioters get how shitty inters are for the regular player base, especially in ranked.
Bazerka is a recruiting coordinator, not a big face to the community. Nobody who gets matched with them in game is gonna know they're a Rioter.
When Rioters are in-game, their summoner names have "Riot" in them. No one's going to act a mess in a game with a Rioter of any kind unless they're just too bold for even the crazies out there.

This is incorrect. "Riot" is just a part of their summoner name, albeit one that is reserved for Rioters. Some Rioters choose to take a summoner name with "Riot" in it, others don't. Bazerka doesn't.
Edit: If you look at the most recent game in their match history (loss on Shen 2 days ago), you can see some other Rioters (Riot Giraffy and Riot HoneyTower) who do.

I actually don't have Riot in my name, so unless someone recognizes me from elsewhere I get treated (and yes flamed) just like anyone else in the game.

Doesn't matter how many times you tell people to eat shit and grin, there will always be happy to shovel the shit into the grinning mouth knowing neither of them will win.
Is being "happy" all that riot cares about now, and not winning at all? Despite every game change and mechanic change being around pro play?
Why did cloud9 and skt both bench their a team instead of telling them to eat shit and grin???

For me, thats correct: Winning at League isn't the point. I play to express and build community, and winning is a marker of that but only a marker. Its kinda like how money is a sign of success, but not success itself. So yea creating an environment where players enjoy themselves and have fun is kinda the point.
A great example is Fortnite and PUBG. Both games you enter fully realizing that you have (in an even field) a 1% chance to win, so the goal is to have fun and enjoy the ride with the rewards coming in other formats. I personally love that intent, cause it means that the game isn't zero sum. You don't derive joy purely from the misfortune of others :).
1%!! hope I don't end up with you in my squad! ;) ;)

That definitely doesn't mean I have a defeatist approach to the game lol. It just means that I enter the game with my own objectives to define "success" and while those objects include getting a chicken dinner, they aren't limited to it. What I'm saying with that is those games empower me to define my own success rather than having it pre-defined for me. Both states of success (defined and undefined) are extremely valid, and I play both at different points :D. However its nice to have that choice is all.
Too bad the game promotes toxicness and unfairity.
Too bad the game promotes toxicness and unfairity.
Would love to hear in detail what specific systems or parts of the game you think promote these things. If its something that actually promotes toxicity (such as a system that gives people loot to feed, etc) that we should 100% rectify it. However, as far as I know most of the game systems in League (while not perfect) are neutral in their bends and its up to the players who inhabit those systems to make them lean toxic or wholesome.
Systems are easy to blame but many times aren't the root cause of the problem :(. In my experience its the human heart / nature thats needs the most love, not the systems :S.
I disagree as much as humanly possible about what defines the safety and character of neighborhoods (and societies as a whole). Systems crush some lives and lift fools to prosperity and prominence every day. Systems decide most of what we're taught and how we think. It's all too complex to lay all blame for a single issue on a single system, but that's because there are nearly infinite intertwining systems, not because the systems aren't the root cause.

In less idealized settings 100% agree. I apologize it was a poor example since there are so many variances to the metaphor, and neighborhoods represent a more complex system than League does. I still stand by the initial point with League systems though since those are fewer and their impacts can be seen a bit more clearly.
<editing the original post to remove a poor metaphor, thats Cosnirak for the callout :D>
In regards to the other person's post I would guess they meant that balance issues and/or poor matchmaking cause toxicity. Personally I think that even if those things cause friction it's not an excuse for being toxic. However, the friction caused between players is justification to call out those issues in the game (assuming they're true) and for Riot to prioritize improving them.

A game is like a neighborhood, laws etc definitely do influence things to an extent, but the safety & character of the neighborhood is really determined by who lives there and how much they invest in their pocket of community. How about getting stuck with the same toxic person or bully over and over again. Even in back to back matches. And before someone says wait a few, there has been countless times I get them the next day or even two days later. Nothing more fun then that shit, I do what you guys say, only to get stuck with this jerk again. I mean I busted my ass to try and get honor unlocked, but do to this I'm backed to locked honor.
And before you blame me, why are they in a match with someone they just harassed. I reported them last match and nothing, yet I get banned. Yup, you guys are right, nothing toxic here, move along.

So its hard to speak specifically into that unique situation without knowing the full context, but I agree thats a frustrating experience that theoretically shouldn't happen at lower elos where the # of players is high enough that you shouldn't be matched with the same person. I'll ask around about that...
This idea that winning isn't the point isn't going go over very well for ranked as long as you're only awarding MMR and LP to the winning team. If Riot's stance is that winning isn't everything, start awarding MMR and LP for individual play, even on a losing team.
Also, one thing I constantly hear Rioters say is "everyone has a bad game sometimes and we don't want to punish someone for having a bad game." What about the other 4 people who have to play with the feeder? I'd much prefer punish the one person for feeding than allow that one person to cause 4 other people to consistently lose. Unless of course you're going to fall back to "winning isn't everything" again. In which case, see above.

I totally hear you and understand the frustration. However, I'd encourage you to ask yourself the question "where do you draw the line to prevent banning bad players?". "Feeder" is a pretty broad term that definitely encompasses players who do intentionally try to ruin the game for others, but I'd hazard a guess is more widely used to insult players who are just outclassed or not as good at the game (I've definitely been called a feeder before, but in those games I've just been outclasses. Never tried to feed on purpose). I 100% disagree with a move that pushes to permanently ban underperforming players just to satisfy the temporary anger of higher performing players in a game.
I bring up this example because, from a data standpoint, "true feeders" and "underperforming players" are indistinguishable from each other (as far as I know) using current data. CS, kills, deaths, map movements, reports (which are faulty and subject to bias & frustration), even historical win / loss would look similar for both parties. So rather than taking extreme punitive action to ensure the small % of "true feeders" are banned by carpet bombing all of these cases, we choose to take a "long horizon" approach where time can work its magic and allow report patterns to arise. The downside is that swift and righteous judgement on "true feeders" isn't as much of a possibility because the system trends toward forgiving rather than unyielding. Hope that makes sense o.o
I just want to point out that it's important to distinguish between "feeding" in general (your "underperforming players") and "intentionally feeding" ("inting"). I think the two terms are useful, but they get used interchangeably and that absolutely sucks.

great distinction! Getting terminology correct is a great first step.
Well....there you have it.....that pretty much sums up the League community right there. 25 down votes for suggesting to stay calm, remain positive and try not to further tilt your teammate that is having a bad game.

Its ok x), I'm not here to get upvotes. But if that response is accurate of the state of players than its a call out for change imo
