What did i miss? Why are mage supports so viable?

Basically, people have figured out that damage is just plain more valuable than utility. That's the short version.

I think that until Riot figures out how to let utility be good without being overbearing, traditional supports are gonna keep getting the shaft.

they can burst the adc out of lane early game and still do a good amount of burst late game with few items.
