I don't know about you guys, but top lane hasn't been this diverse for a long time
Since pretty much season 2 honestly.
For all of you that played in Season 2, you'll remember that although there were obvious top tier picks, there was a good number of them. The best top laners during Season 2 worlds and IPL 5 were as follows: Jayce, Rengar, Shen, Olaf, Irelia, Jax, but at the same time, there were a ton of other picks that were broken out during worlds and IPL5, such as Nidalee, Yorick, Lee Sin, Malphite, Vladimir, and a few others. A lot of these champions had been nerfed during this time, but you get the idea.
Since then, however, top lane had pretty much been a trinity or quad of god picks and everything else was sub tier. Right after Season 2, the best top laners were Olaf, Shen, and later Renekton. Olaf was well, Olaf'd. Shen remained good, and people realized that Renekton was really good so he became popular.
At this point people realized that Magic Resist was a garbage stat since Banshee's and Spirit Visage gave less stats, Cowl didn't exist, and the only good MR item was bulwark. Therefore, top lane pretty much became Ryze/Kennen/Elise and Jayce because tear of the goddess was overpowered during this time too. Everything else was trash tier. If you don't believe me, just look at this thread from 2 years ago.

Anyways, Riot realized this was a major problem, so they nerfed individual champions, buffed magic resist, and later on, massively buffed trinity force. Shen and Renekton became top tier again, and Jax joined them once Trinity force got buffed. Every other top laner at Season 3 worlds was massively outclassed.
After Worlds, Riot planned on nerfing Jax, but the nerfs were held back because he became seriously outclassed by the Season 4 changes. Notably, Shyvana, Dr. Mundo, and Renekton were pretty much picked every game for months. Trundle was picked from time to time to counter these 3, but usually didn't workout afaik.
This led to massive nerfs to the defense tree, sunfire cape, spirit visage, and individual champions. Shyvana still was used because she could rush Bork, but at this point Ryze was massively buffed and people realized how strong Jax still was since his nerfs from S3 worlds never went through. Jax and Shyvana both got nerfed, and Ryze was allowed into worlds (yea I don't know how either, he was broken as hell).
Maokai and Alistar got buffed, and Rumble came back in flavor. Season 4 worlds pretty much consisted mainly of Alistar/Maokai/Ryze/Rumble with Irelia also being pretty solid.
After worlds Alistar/Maokai/Ryze all got nerfs, Gnar replaced Alistar, Ryze disappeared for a while, and Irelia became more popular.
Currently, there a ton of things that are used in different regions. There's the obvious Maokai/Gnar/Ryze/Vladimir/Rumble/Shen/Hecarim, but you also have people playing Irelia, Nautilus, Fizz, Riven (OGN), Jarvan IV, and even Jax (ty Werlyb).
**TL;DR while I'd argue that a few of these champions need to be toned down, especially Ryze and Rumble, and other champions need to be slightly toned up, the fact that you're not only seeing 3 champions in the meta is a good thing. I haven't seen this many champions appear in the meta since Season 2, and that is a wonderful thing for a lane. I don't know what Riot did, but I have to give them a little credit. **
