Armor items vs Magic Resist items

I find it interesting that armor items and magic resist items tend to follow a specific trend. The trend being that the other components of these items tend to be oriented, with armor items usually more offensive/neutral focused, while MR items are almost always defensive focused. There are very little offensive focused MR items even though there are a good amount of defensive focused armor items. When I say MR or Armor items, I mean items that are mostly MR or mostly Armor giving, and have a passive/active (so items like Aegis and Gargoyle Stoneplate are not considered, but the items built from Aegis are split based on which stat is given more).

> #The Items

For clarity, I would like to sort out all of the Armor and MR items into their respected categories.

Armor Offensive item 3025 item 3742 item 3075 item 3800 item 3068 item 3050

Armor Defensive item 3109 item 3157 item 3047 item 3110

Armor Neutral item 3143 item 3026 item 3306 item 3056

MR Offensive item 3091 item 3001

MR Defensive item 3102 item 3222 item 3190 item 3065 item 3194 item 3174 item 3156 (you buy it mainly for the shield, not the passive stats which also support more of a defensive approach)

MR Neutral item 3139 item 3111

It is interesting to see how wide the range of options is for armor items when compared to MR items. Armor items are slightly favoring offensive play styles, but are more balanced than anything across all 3 categories. While on the other hand, MR items are almost exclusively Defense focused. Even the offensive MR items are not easily fit into any champion's build.

Witt's End can only be used by AA based champions who can use its 2 on-hit passives and attack speed. Abyssal Mask is more versatile, but still hard to build on non-magic damage based champions. However, Ninja Tabi (a defensive armor item) is easily fit into any champion's build because it is always useful. Every champion who deals primarily physical damage, uses a good amount of basic attacks to do so (even AD assassins usually have some kind of AA requirement to use one or more of their abilities). The other reason is that it is boots, which do not factor into the core build.

I think an item which gives MR and also has an offensive component which allow it to fit into almost any champion's build, or at least a good amount of both physical and magical damage based champions, would be a good thing. Maybe something similar to Zeke's Convergence, where by itself, it is only so-so in terms of stats, but when used correctly with other teammates, it can provide a really good offensive focused boost.

Eh. Thornmail isn't really an offensive item. Just because it has damage doesn't make it offensive.

The only champion that gets it offensively is Rammus, because of his passive and W. It's much more neutral than anything.

Spirit Visage and Athene's are also more neutral, imo. SV is primarily gotten for sustain, while Athene's gives you a lot more AP than you'd think, and both reward aggression with healing (SV with increasing lifesteal effectiveness, while Athene's giving the bonus healing on shields/heals based on damage dealt).

I get what you are saying, and I was also on the fence about spirit visage. On one hand you heal better naturally or with abilities, but on the other, things like life steal also are increased. The reason I left it as defensive is because it by itself is defensive focused. Excessive healing is a form of defense since it applies to the user, not the targeted enemy lifesteal is just healing based upon the numerical value of the damage deal, not saping life from the target directly. At least according to the wiki:

"The phrase "life steal" for the effect is not accurate, because no (additional) HP is "stolen"; rather, the effective damage that was already dealt (with or without life steal) becomes a source of healing to the attacker. In other words, life steal does not change or increase damage, but it does add a healing effect.".

The same is said for for spell vamp more or less.

"The heal is calculated from damage after being reduced by enemy defense, such as magic resistance, armor or champion damage reduction."

So because the healing from those is not actually a unique form of damage since they are no different than a normal heal where just the amount is dependent on damage. In other words, though it requires damage to be dealt, the healing is not actually a form of damage, meaning it cant be classified as offensive focused. Basically sustain is defensive by definition.

As for Thornmail, it is an offensive item because of both passives. The first not only damages the attacker, but also applies Grievous Wounds. The other passive (reduced attacker's attack speed by 15% for 1 second), is more neutral. However it can still be considered offensive because it effects the attacker negatively, but does nothing to "protect or aid" the holder and/or holder's team.

The only argument I could see for why it is not offensive is that it relies on being attacked. It cannot be applied by the holder (unless they have a taunt). However, if we consider the item in a 1v1 scenario, it is offensive because the enemy will lose the game if they do not attack the holder. Also, minions will attack the holder, and will be damage by it.

Athene's Unholy Grail is also a tricky one, but because the bonus AP is a self buff, while having no direct connection to the enemies whatsoever (it by itself has no effect on enemies), I felt it was neutral at best or even irrelevant in this matter. What you do with the extra AP is not related to the item. If the heal was not capped, then I would consider it more offensive because it directly increases your potential healing based on damage dealt.

So, since the heal is not self serving, is capped, and most importantly is not directly related to damaging or impairing the enemies itself (in terms of adding a damage component to an attack or some form of cc), I felt it was defensive, because healing is defensive.

item 3111 makes burst mages useless. i play tank, and unless i have to worry about a fed mage, or ones that do sustained damage like Teemo or Diana, then I never need to worry about them. get some HP from my armor items, can just run at them.

It is neutral because it does nothing to enemies and does nothing to directly increase your offensive capabilities (such as an on hit effect or an aura would). Movement is neutral. This item can aid in both chasing and fleeing. It can save you from a pick or let you continue the fight sooner. So it is neutral because there is no clear advantage for either offense or defense over the other.

Also, in this post, the +25 Magic Resist stat is not considered since it is not a passive or active. It just determined its type of defense (if the item is considered an Armor item or a MR item).

How are item 3102 item 3174 and item 3156 more defensive than item 3001?

item 3001 has a passive that lets people in a certain area around the owner take more magic damage.

While the other options you said have a little bit more defensive oriented passives than abyssal mask. They play more towards tanking or healing damage, veil and maw with the respective cc prevention and magic shield while Unholy Grail rewards the user with increased healing/shielding based on how much damage the user deals to enemy champs.

That is cool and all but the items are not more defensive than item 3001 The items item 3156 and item 3102 are offensive items with defensive features while item 3001 is a defensive item with offensive features. Yes item 3001 might be purchased for becoming a little stronger offensively as a tank, but the other items are still more offensive.

While that is definitely very true, I should have specified more and said that I was only talking about the passives. My bad on not clarifying

Yes you are right about Maw and Veil being offensive based items with defensive feature while Abyssal Mask is kinda the opposite of the two items.

One thing that I kinda found funny is that Mecurial Scepter is the AD version of Veil in a way, it grants a bunch of offensive stats with some defensive stats while also giving the user a passive that can help invalidate one of the enemy team’s CC.

Mecurial Scepter I left as neutral because the item is usable in both an offensive situation as well as in a defensive one. The active does not directly deal damage or cc an enemy, so it is not really offensive. But it does not protect against incoming damage or CC, it just cleanses the cc if it is applied already. However, I have seen many times where the speed buff is used to chase a fleeing opponent. So i left it as neutral since it had no clear lean. But if there was not a neutral option, I would put it as defensive since it cleanses CC.

Malphite item 3025 item 3068 item 3111 item 3143 item 3075 item 3083

Get 100-0'd anyway by AD champions, but become immune to all AP champions with only item 3111.
