PSA: If you are not comfortable with a champion, don't take said champ into ranked

SnugglePuggle94··52 votes·2,465 views

Because ranked is where you need to be on your top game, and if you are taking a champion into it because you like him but aren't good with him/her yet, then don't risk the game for others because you wanted to do that.

My last ranked game, my mid laner chose Illaoi to go mid against Victor and absolutely did nothing right. He went 0-12-6 and would jump in when Garen went in head first and got us all killed when we weren't ready, or would split push by himself and get caught out. Even in teamfights he did no damage and was dead in a matter of seconds. We lost a game because he fed so much. After one of the guys on my team called him out, the guy got abusive too.

Now don't take things the wrong way. I'm just trying to help others out there to avoid games like these. Please, if you want to learn a champion, play them in normals or bots and learn their ins and outs, their builds, their combos, etc. Then when you are good with them and feel confident, you can take them into ranked.

Playing normal game does not matter all that much. Even if you feed hard, in the end, you are not going to lose anything important. This is unlike ranked, where you lose LP and your MMR decreases.

ahferroin712 votes

Um, no, you do lose MMR for losing in a normal game. It's less of a loss if it's your first time as that champ, but you should still be learning basic stuff like combos and resource management in bots or customs first.

IcyPepper4 votes

Isn't ranked and normal MMR separate?

ahferroin71 votes

I'm not 100% certain they're entirely separate. I believe that your matchmaking for provisional is supposed to use your MMR from normals, but I'm not even sure about that. I do know though that ARAM has a separate MMR from normals and ranked.

Mysticman891 votes

Normal MMR and Ranked MMR are separate for the majority.

First time ranked (ever, not just for the season) MMR I believe is influenced by your normals mmr, but only that one time, and beyond that your future ranked MMR is only influenced by your ranked MMR from previous seasons.

ARAM (and previously teambuilder too) have seperate MMRs from normals and ranked.

I believe your MMR for featured game modes is seeded from your normals MMR too.

Playing bots is pointless. I can play AP Talon in bots and win. Bot games don't give you a good feel for the champion, and let's be honest, there are no champions where playing 1 bot game is gonna make the difference between you feeding or not feeding in a normal game.

KetiaX2 votes

Post a video of you winning against bots as AP talon. I expect it to be 1v5 as well.

Paladin 0f Life2 votes

That's just stupid. It let's you learn champ mechanics a few small trick that you can then apply without feeding in norms and ruining a game for 4 other people.

TurquoiseYoshi6 votes

Bots give you knowledge of the base mechanics. Seeing something being used is very different from using it.

cuddlykitten42 votes

Yea, but after you've played about half of the champs you should have enough of the feel of mechanics in general that it shouldn't take you very long to adapt. It generally takes me about 10 minutes on a new champ to have it figured out enough to pass my opponent's cs. They usually escape the first fight with their lives or I lose the first fight outright. I figure out what went wrong (since I got to see how my mechanics flow when playing someone who is intentionally reacting to my mechanics instead of a bot who is just playing the game at a basic level) and the second (occasionally the third) fight I take over the lane. In fact, I almost always win my first game with a champ even though it is PvP. I blame this on a combination of beginner's luck, and the fact that you tend to alt lane and be more sneaky on a champ the first time while you're feeling out the limitations. Ultimately, if you lose a normal game, who cares? You get less IP, but still more than winning a bot game. It messes up your MMR? Well, honestly, if you're MMR is impressive enough for losing a little to truly matter then you probably don't have any champs you haven't played any more. One can be taught to disarm someone who intends to shoot them. No matter how much you were taught, it means nothing if you get to that situation just to learn that you freeze when a gun is on you and you never put yourself in a real situation while learning so you have no idea what to do at that point and are now right back at square one. How many heroes in legends do you know of that weren't forged in trials of fire?

Knoyle1 votes

You can practice combos on bots, practice skill techniques, hell you can just practice clearing jungle so you know your limits on camps for the champion you want to use. It's used to familiarize yourself with the champion so at least you won't make absolutely stupid plays that never should have happened to begin with in a pvp match.

SlippySloop2 votes

Of course, if you have the fundamentals of the game down, you should be able to hold your own in normals with any champ you're playing for the first time without the need for bots (not to mention being absolutely sick of bots and wanting nothing more to do with it).

A Liberal1 votes

Really the only times I use bots are if i'm trying to practice solo clears on champions, or wan't to practice things like wall jumping or bard portaling. I know I had to play a lot of customs to be able to clear jungle with Nidalee without having to back after my third camp x-x

Sypher The Poro1 votes

Yes you can play anything in bots and win, but that is not the point.

I have about 500 games on Riven and still play her in bots to practice new combos or just try to get a new trick down, like the backwards Ward-Q which is nigh impossible to use correctly.

Also, bots are a ton of fun for playing Ultimate Bravery with friends and not getting stomped or just see who can get max Meji stacks first.

Restless Slumber1 votes

The backwards third q isn't that hard to utilize properly. I almost always try to use this trick when escaping a gank. I suggest you try that out in some normals. It feels really great when doing and can be done pretty consistently as long as you learn the time window.

Sypher The Poro1 votes

I've got it down, the reason I called it near impossible is because it is so incredibly situational. Only 2 times I've used it in a normal game was to stop a Fizz and Lee from killing me with their Q. In a gank, I usually let them get close then just W > E and I'm then too far under tower.

Restless Slumber1 votes

Here's a situation that you can use it to good effect in a gank then. Space your q's and you must have at least 35% cdr. On the third e + r then q with ward and turn the gank around. I've pulled this off I think 2 times with positive outcomes. I feel like you should try doing this, it's pretty fun and can catch people off guard.

cuddlykitten43 votes

First, bots teach you bad habits. Second, it's good to learn something in a situation that is not forgiving, it prevents you from developing a docile pattern. Third, bots are predictable and therefore no fun. I buy champs for fun. My first time on a champ is always PvP, and it usually goes just fine.

Carpe Victoria6 votes

You can't win this battle. If i had a nickel for every time someone said one of these lines...

"first time. this champ is op freelo i dont need to learn it" "lol, this is my smurf doesn't matter what i play because im god and i dont care about this account anyways"

Athenes Lulu4 votes

I am comfortable with only backline supports and I have no regrets.

But again, we one-trick roles do not like the new draft, even as support mains.

I really think that league should use the system smite has for their ranked. You have to master/rank the god/champ at least once before you can play them in ranked. Plus they recently added 2 extra bans for their ranked despite having 73 gods/champs.

cuddlykitten41 votes

Except there are several of us who have tons and tons of champs down for a variety of situations. There are champs that I've only played once or twice since the mastery system started, but I have years of experience playing them against certain situations. Some of my best champs aren't even mastery 4 yet because I have so much experience on them that I really only pull them out when the time is right. Forcing those of us who have played for years to have to put that much effort into champs we already put that much effort into in order to be able to play them in ranked would be beyond frustrating.

BioticBrony1 votes

While yes this is a case especially since League added in it's ranking thing for champs later on. It would be the same amount of champs you need to start playing ranked. So you only need 16 of those champs. While yes this does seem frustrating, this makes sure that new and old players who just play a few champs to branch off and try new things and make sure you have enough diversity and knowledge for ranked.

cuddlykitten41 votes

Again, why should I have to have 16 M5 champs to play ranked? If you were to add in all the time that I've put into it from the start then I'd probably have the upper 40s worth of M5 champs at least. How it stands now, I have 13 champs at level 5. That still leaves me 3 short. I think the chug to level 30 is more than sufficient to prove that you're ready to go for it. Besides, if you're not actually ready, that's what B5 is for

BioticBrony1 votes

I am not saying you have to have r5 but at least rank them up once. Just a bit of a miscommunication there. Also I have seen numerous level 30's who don't know the game fully. This system makes it so you know the champs that you play in ranked well enough.

Banuvan3 votes

Riot could solve this problem easily by making you have a certain mastery level on a champ before being able to play it in ranked. Mastery level 3 is very simple to get to and would be solid. Atleast then you would know the person picking it has played it somewhat before using it in ranked.

A Liberal2 votes

Shh it's okay. My last ranked game (My placements r.i.p), I had a guy who went Lee Sin mid after banning our toplaners intended pick, and then proceeded to go 1-20-6. The worst part was is the rest of my team was doing REALLY good, and we almost carried it. Oh well :(

SnugglePuggle941 votes

That was exactly like my game with Illaoi or however you spell her name.

GenghisEmo2 votes

PSA: If your allies tell you "pick Jhin" PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF NAGAKABOROUS DONT!!!!!!

Instead take your best Marksmen, Assassin, or Mage (if your allies were telling you take Jhin mid, you see what i mean by Assassin or Mage).

If they tell you "go Lee" dont if you cant Lee. For example, i'd rather Voli. Even when allies threaten to dodge (let em XD, Voli is good right now, idk why they complain XD).

AlwaysByMySide2 votes

To be perfectly honest, if you take a champion you're not super experienced into ranked and do that poorly, the lack of experience on the champion wasn't the problem. Being really bad at the game was.

If I had my entire champion pool banned, I could still pick up a champion I am a bit less experienced with (like Illaoi, Nasus [had to do this one top lane recently and I did well], Irelia, or Aatrox) and do fine. I'm less likely to carry, but hard feeding is not usually a result of not knowing a champion very well. It's a result of playing like shit in general.

Dead Echo2 votes

If i want to play a champ I've never played before I would go to a bot game to learn basic mechanics about them then I would try to see if I can play them on ARAM. I've played normal's where people have played champs that they have never played before and they didn't do terrible with them, but I believe if you've never played a champ and have no knowledge of how that champ works then learn about them in a bot game.

stop with these shitty posts that state the obvious.

Why don't you stop with your rude comments?

Sevixys2 votes

Yup, he is everywhere..

XIII Vanitas1 votes

Ok, I'll be polite. Don't you think that players know already what you're saying? It's common sense. Then why they still do it? Because they want to, for whatever reason. Is this post going to change their ideas? No, it's not. It just shows that you're very condescending, because you think that other people aren't smart enough to understand by themselves that they shouldn't use champion they're not comfortable playing.

SnugglePuggle944 votes

Uh no. I was never condescending. There are tons of people out there that actually are oblivious to the fact that they aren't good with a champ and keep taking them into ranked games.

XIII Vanitas1 votes

Oh, so you know they aren't good with a certain champion, but you know it? Where does this knowledge come from? I guess the answer isn't from experience, because ut's rare to play more than one game with the same stranger. Anyways, what do you want? Do you want to choose what other people have to play? Does it matter to you that maybe they want to hone their skills with a certain champion in a competitive enviroment? I might be rude sometimes, but at least I'm not as egoistic and pretentious as you are.

Wow. I am neither egoistic nor pretentious. But you, are rude and a jerk.

"so you know they aren't good with a certain champion, but you know it?" That makes no sense. Maybe try writing a sentence in good English before arguing with someone.

I have played many games with the same people that I met in a previous match. My knowledge comes from playing many games with people who don't know how to play a champion and ruin the game for me and everyone else besides the team he is feeding.

I want to help others, that's why I'm doing a PSA. Like I said before, some people actually do not know they are doing that bad with a champion and take them into ranked multiple times, making others lose a lot of LP because of it.

Normals is a competitive environment as people want to win too. LP just isn't on the line. Ranked is serious gameplay where you need to be on your best game, or at least** strong**.

I don't know why you are being so mean and saying things that are not true. But to me it sounds like you are pretentious and crude.

XIII Vanitas1 votes

Ok, I'm trying to have a discussion with SnugglePuggle94 and what you're adding to this conversation is absolutely nothing, other than saying that I'm everywhere (what?) and I'm an asshole, which is in no way related to what we're talking about. Don't you think that you could use some self-criticism? I'm not calling you an asshole, but you're acting like one.

SnugglePuggle942 votes

Okay, dude, this guy actually sees you are being an asshole besides me. So why don't you take the hint and stop trying to refute everything I say just because you think it's wrong even though I've been right the whole time?

Get out of here. He is not acting like an asshole, you are.

XIII Vanitas1 votes

Am I acting like an asshole because I disagree with you? Okay then, I'll leave you to your circlejerk! Have a good day! ^^

SnugglePuggle942 votes

And now calling me a circlejerk. What a low shot to take because you know you've been defeated. Get a life.

XIII Vanitas1 votes

This discussion is a circlejerk. You just want to hear that you're right.

I don't keep playing games with those that fed or trolled.

But you previously said that you know that they don't play well with a certain champions because you've played many games with them.

My knowledge comes from playing many games with people who don't know how to play a champion and ruin the game for me and everyone else besides the team he is feeding.

Which means that either you're contradicting yourself or that you're basing your judgement on their performance of a single game (and that's unfair, because it could have been just a bad game).

There are other incongruences in what you're saying, but I'm not going to point them out because it's not worth my time. You don't want to listen and I'm ok with that: your view of the game ruins only your experience, not mine. Again, have a good day.

SnugglePuggle942 votes

Wow. You are ridiculous.

I said I have played many games with people who don't know how to play a champion well. Meaning I have** not** played games with the same person multiple times, but with multiple people over the course of time that have not played well, and that accumulated to a lot of games, therefore my knowledge came from that. I have not been contradicting myself at all.

It's also real easy to play with one person that plays awful then look at his matches online and see how he has been doing. Duh.

I have been listening. You have been pulling out anything that can be negative where there isn't and refuting things that are the truth.

It ruins the experience for many other people, not just me. I'm tired of repeating myself, good Lord.

Go get a life besides trying to be a bully, because clearly you are not good at it, and there is no place for it here.

SnugglePuggle942 votes

Exactly. I don't get why this person is being the way he is.
