Why do you think league has so many AFK's?

I receive an AFK, on my team or the other, at least once every three games. It's actually rather shocking, if you ask me. Why do you think so many people quit in the middle of games? From what I understand, League has more quiters than most online games. Why do you think that is?

Welcome to League of Summer!

With no school and no social activities planned whatsoever, the demographic and available play time of players ages 9 to 18 increases tenfold.

Now, while there are exceptions, tons of players in this age group will start a game knowing full well that they're supposed to be doing chores or that dinner is in 5 minutes. The result? Parents get impatient or angry, tell their child to "get your ass down here" and thus the player will AFK.

It's less prominent during the school year because kids have school and extra curricular activities, but during summer they have all the time in the world to try and become challenjour, and by extension screw their teammates over.

I recommend playing during the general downtime when most kids are asleep. For me, that's about 1 or 2 am PST.

I suppose that explains why ARAM is a safe zone (most of the time, anyway)

True, ARAM is kind of the fun stepsister of SR.

Loads of fun, but nobody cares about it when they want to play a serious game.

Another reason: client is trash - in 50 % of my games I get attempting to reconnect or someone else gets this or bugsplat... I uninstalled league for some time, waiting for them to fix their client - my last ranked game was Trynda top - I got top and dced after 17 cs; couldn't reconnect, probably I'm with 9 reports for leaving the game and 5 games 20 minute queue. Don't really want to play it now, when I know that my connection is fine (I don't have any problems with any other online game), but the Rito\s client is bugged.

Two main reasons imo:

  1. People don't realize that quitting just ruins a game.
  2. People know the above but believe the game is already forgone and that you idiots are too stupid to realize it and keep wasting their time by not surrendering. That's not me btw, that's just the thought-process.

Riot can help with the first very easily. I also think Riot can help with the second by including voice chat for easy communication, but honestly it's up to people to encourage each other and explain themselves in why they think we can win if we are down 5 towers and two inhibitors and can't risk warding outside our base to catch people.

But that's my more cynical hypothesis. My more conservative hypothesis just rebuffs yours by saying, "No, people leave in league just as much if not less than other online games." My reasoning draws from LFG groups, LFR groups, pretty much every MMO I've played, the way FPS shooters matchmaking and game design works, what is acceptable in a community, and other stuff.

My favorite example is TF2. Rounds might only last 5-10 minutes, but a GAME in A/D is until one team wins 3 times in a row on offense or until defense wins once. People leave in the middle of games in TF2 all the time. People leave a variety of games in the heat of battle. It's kind of rude to leave a LFG pug as the tank is pulling, but you get replacements so fast and dungeons are so easy that it doesn't really matter.

So with that context, why do people leave? In my opinion it just seems like they're tired of playing and want to do something else. So now apply that to league. Suddenly, it's not that they are mad or ragey. It's just that they don't want to play the game anymore for whatever reason and just leave. And with the way that League snowballs and takes time to play out, you can't exactly blame them. TF2 snowballs extremely quickly, but then the round is over in like 30 seconds, a minute tops, unless you can recover. Some one snowballs to the extent that you can't stop them in League? You still have to wait through 5-15 minutes if you don't surrender, not because they are necessarily drawing it out but because the mechanical limitations of the game prevent them from ending it in 30 seconds that early.

  1. A bunch of the league demographic is immature (seriously some of you need to grow up).
  2. Because of Summer break some people will get on rage and leave, or get on not leaving them self with at least a widow of an hour open.
  3. Back to #2 if your able to bash someone in/gank a lane enough times, some people will afk due to maturity/ fed up

Most of the time I definitely attribute it to the shit client.

90% of the time I'm "afk" I'll come back after I've fixed whatever stupid error was crashing League... But I don't think the general playerbase has enough tech knowledge to know to turn it off and back on again. :P

Because immaturity and leaving actually matters in this game. Other games probably have more AFKs, but they dont matter since that player will just be replaced usually.
