A 3000+g tank item will most likely not have the effect that you desire

A tank item that will scale well into the late game would be nice to counter to late game scaling ADCs and late game scaling damage champions, but the issue is that tanks are generally low on gold in the game. Especially in LCS but less so in normal ranked games carry champions with high amounts of damage are getting the most CS, the most kills, and the most gold. Damage leads to more gold, because with more damage, you can CS easier and last hit enemy chamions easier. That means that stacking to 3k+g on MalphiteBraum Nautilusetc. will be harder than Ryze Caitlyn Vayne etc. Basically, since a late game or snowball champion gets more gold, expensive items that are 3k gold or more will be easier to get for them than say a Leona .

For example, item 3143 is buffed into a late game item that costs 3.6k gold, and gives 40 extra armor(or something) while retaining its other stats and passives. Since that item is so gold efficient, yet so expensive, that it will be easier for a Caitlyn to pick up than a Nautilus . Let's say caitlin is facing a team that has Yasuo Tryndamere andVayne . Randuins is impossible to pass up in this situation, and also it has more stats. Now there is a 182 armor 2734 health(well technically 2384 but with a BT shield) caitlin with crit damage reduction and a slow. Meanwhile the allied braum is still sitting on just under 2k extra gold, still 1.6 away from the raunduins.

You're forgetting up the tank junglers and top laners. You are focused on the supports.

Uh, actually yes it does. Your entire point is that tanks will not have enough gold to buy the expensive tank item. That thinking is flawed because junglers have their own source of income, and get ahead by ganking lanes (you can get kill or assist gold). Top lane tanks can cs and win lane for their gold.

When it comes to the late game, tank junglers and top laners who rely off assists or CSing(assuming it isn't given to the carry. See LCS) will still have considerably less gold than an carry who has been getting kills and getting lots of CS.

If I suck at explaining, just read

A lot of good points here but also a very simple one being overlooked: Damage makes it easier to acquire gold.

Building damage enhances one's ability to gain gold in almost every aspect. It allows more effective/faster last hitting, enhanced ability to kill champions, faster turret destruction, faster objectives. Once you build damage you can snowball your ability to earn gold and thus build more damage. It's very intentionally a snowball effect and it's why feeding the carry is important.

Look at someone who builds a tank item, with the exception of sunfire, has your ability to earn gold been enhanced in any way? Can you last hit better? Can you kill faster? How about securing objectives? Think about the role a tanky champion has on a team. What happens when the tank runs in and kills a whole bunch of people, everyone screams at him for KS'ing. Building defense is essentially a gold sink meant to slow down the enemy carry.

So to balance this we have high end offense items costing more because people who build those items can gather gold exponentially faster than those who don't. Meanwhile, defense items cost less because you need to be able to buy those items so your defenses can spike and allow you to keep up with a carry despite having far less gold.
