And then just root you seven times as he walks away, laughing the whole time

Because you thought it would be smart to smite another monster before, or you just missed your smite.

Edit: If they have an Ivern you need to watch your buffs

They are talking about Ivern.

Ivern can channel for a couple seconds and instantly kill a buff with Smite.

Maybe they should keep watch on the major buffs when they KNOW that the enemy has an Ivern.

It really doesn't help.

First clear? You hace to start on one side of the jungle and your allies have to get to lane. Ivern just steals your other buff.

Subseqient clears? You have two buffs on opposite sides of the map around the same time, so he'll just steal whichever one you don't go to.

Ward it? He can be in and out of the buff by the time lanes can respond. If one person finds him, he can just shield their damage, slow them and snare them while walking away.

Pro tip: don't stay around long enough for him to land seven roots on you.
