Does Malphite ult NEED to cross walls (after the Vanguard update)?

I know dashes in this game are typically allowed to go over walls if they are long enough (with some exceptions), but I wonder if that's absolutely necessary for the big gapclosers on Vanguards. For doing the Vanguard thing of barreling into the enemy team to initiate a fight, completely ignoring barriers seems a little less thematic and leads to more of an "I want to stealthily flank and assassinate an out of position target" pattern than "I want to boldy charge forward and lead my team into a fight." So maybe a good way to sharpen the niche of Malphite and make space in the Vanguard world for him alongside the others would be to change his ult so that it is really good at initiating across open ground instead of just really good at initiating always in every situation.

Sion is on the polar opposite end of the spectrum where he announces his charge to everyone on the map, takes some time to warm up his speed for the doom train, and can't pass through walls or even other champions and I think people generally believe this still feels pretty awesome. He has those weaknesses for the ult but it counteracts the strengths of the massive range making him nearly a global threat, the powerful cc it applies on targets hit, and how capable Sion is of being a follow-up threat with the rest of his kit.

I don't think all the Vanguards need to have their charge as telegraphed and counterplay-laden as Sion's, but maybe those telegraphs and forms of counterplay should be the norm for Vanguards and when someone like Zac (because Zac's jump is really fun and iconic and I don't think it should be changed) can hop huge distances over walls and champs with little warning that should be seen as his 'thing' that you would pick him for over other Vanguards.

That's a lot of downvotes for a well written post; did you kick a bunch of puppies on the way here?

I think your idea has a fair amount of potential. It would significantly distinguish his engage potential from that of the other vanguards, and his QWE are so boring that it would be nice for them to get reworked into something more unique and powerful. (They also have pretty much no counterplay.) Heck, Malphite's passive is more interesting than his QWE...

On a separate note, I'm still salty about them adding a shadow to Zac's E. That's not how light works! It's not like Cho'Gath where you have no idea where his Q is going to appear. If you don't see Zac, then he sort of deserves to land on you (if he aimed well). I'd have preferred his E losing half its damage. QQ. /selfpity

I think my issue is that I write under the assumption that proposed redesign changes are to be accompanied by other changes to result in a power-neutral change while most people look specifically at the change and think "oh he wants to nerf this champion." I actually think Malphite's changes should make him a little more versatile so he's not simply a counter-champion that people only choose if the enemy has multiple physical auto-attackers but I was hoping the discussion could also segue into talking about Vanguards in general and what their mobility should/shouldn't be capable of in a match.

While it's true that shadows don't really work that way with Zac's jump, I think you have to admit that zero warning at all on his engage when he can engage from a lot more places than most junglers makes it feel very unfair. Zac is now on top of you and you are knocked back when he started in a position that is maybe your third or fourth priority for getting vision to prevent a gank.

The other thing I like about Zac's hop is that, even though it can cross walls and champions, it is much weaker as an escape compared to an engage due to his need to charge it and that keeps him solidly in the 'vanguard' category.

I'm actually down for taking power away from his ult. At the moment, it's too strong for him to have too much power in the rest of his kit, and that means he's pretty much a brain dead R bot.

It's litterally the only ability that makes him useful, why nerf it?

Because then there might be room in his power budget to make OTHER parts of his kit useful too?

well that makes sense, but we would need A LOT more powerful basic spells
