The real problem with CertainlyT's design: An Unpopular Opinion

Pierce The Veal··10 votes·451 views

CertainlyT simply makes the best champion kits.

Wait wait wait, don't jump to conclusions. I said the best kits, not the most balanced. If you look at his champion design he makes champions that play their role perfectly. Every ability in their kit properly supplements the other abilities and their passive. And everything is unique for the most part. All in all what that means is we have uniquely strong champions.

His kits are a nightmare to balance I suppose, but I believe he is actually really good at what he does, champion design. I don't know what the solution to this is, but I really don't think that he is bad at all. I think he adds a lot to the game, even if he might at times make balance a nightmare.

CT is a creative guy. His talents are really wasted at riot imo.

Agreed.

that's the thing, he adds too much leaving little to no counterplay leaving opponents with an unfun matchup almost everytime

The issue is actually that it's a competition between champs with kits that don't work well within their kit vs champs that do. My point being I think it would actually be really good if every champion progressed towards being a CertainlyT champion. In that case there would be no issue with overdesigned champions vs underdesigned champions because all of them would have kits that really complement themselves, hence getting rid of the issue with CertainlyT champions.

That's the Dota approach. Nothing is broken if everything is broken, which is true, but that game is also much less popular for a reason.

Śhunpo3 votes

No, it's less popular because a majority of the playerbase is Russian or Pinoy who will flame you in every chat for making one mistake.

Also because DOTA 2 takes a lot more time to learn than LoL and most people don't have the attention span or devotion to go through with learning it.

It isn't a matter of broken. He just designs kits that work better than other champions' kits. With the same budget he's able to bring out more power in a champion than other designers. All of the abilities in those champions' kits fit, they don't feel tacked on at all.

So CertainlyT for lead designer?

If I agreed to this (and I want to) I would get deleted through sheer downvotes.

Sure, just make Yasuo's abilities cost flow (until he reaches max flow), give windwall health that drains over time (ranged autos depleting an additional 25% health and projectile spells depleting 50%) . Take off the tornado on his Q and move it to the first cast of his ult so he isn't oppressing for melees on top of his W shutting off entire kits. The stacking on his Q could end in a stun attack instead to keep the combo component of it.

From there you still have the fundamentals of the character's core but starting at a point which can be balanced much more easily. His dashthrough can do more damage or his Q have longer uptime or whatever is needed to balance his power up and down as is found to be necessary.

Yep that would make sense. Though he might need some compensatory buffs but it would make him less of a pain in the ass to play against.

That would be the idea yeah. Windwall can have a lower cooldown since it becomes breakable; tornado moving to R first cast can do more damage since its gated until level 6, Q could get its uptime reverted, E->Q given a larger radius, and more I probably wouldn't even think of.

The point is by adding more knobs to tweak, it makes an easier balance. Manaless champions are always going to be harder to balance than mana champions, just like point-and-click champions are going to be harder to balance than skill shot ones.

I agreed wholeheartedly until you said point and clicks are harder to balance than skill shots. In my experience the latter has broken the game more often than the former, with the only exceptions being Malzahar, Annie, Fiddlesticks. Old Taric and Sion never really broke the game so to speak so I won't list them.

Honestly he just doesn't sit and think "maybe this is too overloaded". He just goes along with it.

I just think the abilities on his champion's really fit well into that one champions kit. Maybe too well, but I think it would be nice if the rest of the champions in the game were like that as well.

i think he just makes kits that are really fun to play but just not fun to play against along with what you said

Yeah. Though I like to think that it's not so much that it's not fun to play against them, it's not fun against to play against a CertainlyT champion with a non-CertainlyT champion. It jus feels like you're outclassed despite dealing similar amounts of damage and cc.

I completely agree.
