Good old 99% slows, because slow resistance shouldn't be doing it's job.

Slow resistance will never push a 99% slow low enough to not hit the soft cap of 110. Therefore a 99% slow is basically a 90% slow that Riot wanted to ignore slow resistance with. Why is that? Why have a mechanic if you're just going to keep bypassing it?

Riot combating mobility creep by adding a skill that completely fucks over champions without dashes while barely touching those with them.

It's basically a root that you can still flash/dash through. Think of it that way, not as a slow.

Juggernaut Jesus9 votes

So you can flash.

Hawkefire10 votes

And thus the champs with no mobility get further and further left behind.

TotalJerk2 votes

Because you can flash? That ability almost everyone runs?

LankPants6 votes

Because if you can flash you can use any mobility move.

I agree that slows are kind of ridiculous. It might actually be worse than all the mobility that Riot throws onto every champion and their mother.

Mobility (particularly wall hops) is way worse for the game, and has the lovely side effect of making the proliferation of slows (which do nothing against dashes and wall hops) fuck over dash-less champions even more. This is not the work of competent design and balance teams trying to combat mobility creep. It's the work of either idiots or liars who don't give a fuck.

The best explanation that I have seen for this comes in three parts:

  1. Being unable to move for 2.5 (5 with rewind) seconds on a point and click ability is bullshit, so it can't be a root.
  2. TOOLTIPS! Would you really like them to say "A 99% speed boost and a 90% slow"? Even when a 90% slow has the same outcome?
  3. A champion who is slowed by 90% for 2.5 seconds is almost exactly as useless as one who has been slowed by 99%. Neither can do anything beyond flash or dash.

Good old knockups, because tenacity shouldn't be doing it's job. Good old true damage, because armor shouldn't be doing it's job. Good old dash spells, because move speed shouldn't be doing it's job. Good old AD ratios, because ability power shouldn't be doing it's job. Good old %HP damage, because HP shouldn't be doing it's job.

It's almost like Riot's design and balance teams are terrible.

I think you may have missed my point. Not every defense should apply 100% of the time, and it's not unfair or imba when they don't.

Do the math before crying about something first. Most MS reliant champions like Rammus or Hecarim can get to over 700 MS, and even with just slow resist from Swifties (not using the mastery) that 99% slow gets reduced to a ~74% slow, which leaves them at around 175 MS (and there is a soft cap at 220 MS, so they aren't even going that slow yet). Adding in the extra from the mastery and it reduces the slow to about 66%, and that leaves them at around 230-240 MS.

so 230-240 ms isn't slow? what.....

junglerboy162 votes

I didn't say it isn't slow, I just said that it doesn't bring you to the hard cap of 110 minimum MS (by "not going that slow yet" I meant they aren't going at 175 MS even, but a little more because of the soft cap). If I said they aren't even going that slow yet, then it would have implied that I meant they weren't generally going very slow.

Sammystorm3 votes

there is a problem when a champion at 700 movement speed and building to stop slows can only reach 230-240 movement speed. That is literally a loss of 460 ms

GloriousKaiser2 votes

I have a feeling this relates to Armor because you know, why bother building counter items like item 3075 item 3143 if item 3035 item 3071 item 3142 basically invalidate their main purpose?

Squarefighter2 votes

...wut

Junkο1 votes

Except that Thornmail main purpose is to return damage you take before armor is calculated and Randuins main purpose is to MS and AS slow

Agreed, it should have been a snare.

  1. A Root would've been broken.
  2. Unlike every other form of CC Slows are hit in effectiveness by two stats: slow resistance AND Tenacity
  3. Zilean only has a 99% slow when the ability is at level 5, which a state where practically every ability is supposed to be crazy powerful.
lDontLiftIcarry1 votes

What champ or thing are we talking about? Sorry I'm a little slow on the pick up of current events....

FoggyPaws1 votes

Zileans rework makes his slow strength increase with level, instead of it's duration like on live all the way up to 99%

Here is a better question.

Why have slow at all if Riot is nerfing every single one of them to be 1.5 seconds or less? =/

I mean come on, where is the love?

Teridax681 votes

The higher the slow, the more effective slow resistance gets to be, so I don't see the issue. item 2138 brings it down to a 75% slow, which is still high, but a massive difference from 99%. For example, if you're Ashe and get slowed by Zilean , your movement speed will be reduced to 325x0.01x0.5+110, which is about 112 movement speed. With Elixir of Iron or item 3009 , your movement speed will be reduced to 325x0.25x0.5+110, so about 151 movement speed, which is a pretty big difference. Even the mastery will give you an extra 15 movement speed, and that's just at the lowest base movement speed you can get, without counting bonus movespeed from items and the like.

This is also a case of percentages screwing with perception: a 99% slow divides your movement speed by 100, whereas a 90% slow divides your movement speed by 10. In this scenario, 10% slow resistance literally makes the slow ten times less effective, ignoring soft and hard caps. If anything, slow resistance would be especially effective against something this strong.

Slow resistance will never push a 99% slow low enough to not hit the soft cap of 110.

The soft cap is 220, actually. Slows apply the strongest slow first, then other slows at 1/3 strength and multiplicatively (so, for example, Ashe with Frozen Mallet has 35% + ((30/3)% of 65) = 41.5% slow. Slows strong enough to drop below 220 MS are applied at half effect until they hit 110 (the exact math is a bit different, but that's effectively what the math means).

It's hard capped at 110. So long as there aren't any >100% slows, that's the hard cap.

A 99% slow, reduced by slow resistance from Swifts, is ~74%; with the mastery stacked, it's ~67% instead.

At 385 MS (lowest base + Swifts), you're actually slowed to 160 w/o the mastery, 173.5 w/ the mastery. It's actually an effective 55-58.5% slow, and it can never be stronger than an effective 71.5% slow.

Not that anyone really cares about the math; you're moving below 200 MS, which makes everything harder.

Having a slow this strong makes it seem more unique. It's a snare/root that still allows you to dash/flash. The real problem is giving nearly every new champion some form of dashing and slowing.
