I'm a support main, Silver 3 currently, and I main Soraka.
I don't think she's face roll, nor is Janna. Disengages and sustain are not fully appreciated in Bronze to Silver.
While I agree laning phase isn't anything special. Often times you'll end up supporting the cowardly lion as Soraka, and and that's not going to do your lane any good. ADCs in Bronze to Silver usually only respond to zoning. They don't understand that your W sustain counters poke, they need to see that they have a safe space to farm. So you're going to need to learn how to zone with her, which isn't the easiest thing to do especially if you do get counter picked.
Not only that, but almost everything is trying to kill you which is a big change from playing most supports. Usually you're only above tanks on the hit list. However that's how you know you're doing your job. I notice I need to pay so much more attention to my cooldowns on items and spells when I'm Soraka because people do get messy when they start to lose to a Soraka. They will risk death just to kill you.
I really only use her ult for clutch heals in areas that I'm not near, so if I see top getting ganked. Your timing needs to be right. Too soon your heal doesn't mean that much, too late and they die. This is where it's good to have exceptional map awareness. I usually pay close attention to that fight to see if I need to ult while still keeping my presence in lane. When you're participating in fights it's the same thing. You need to keep yourself alive and out of harm's way, but also figure out where your resources need to go. Anything wasted is painful after your build spike until late game build, which you rarely reach as support.
Another thing is timing your E, and I think this is especially crucial for team fights. It's also your only form of hard CC. Sometimes you can land a nice combo EQ combo outside of team fights as well. It's also very handy for when someone TP's near you because you can easily root them, sadly this happens a lot in Silver.
I really love champions that have to manage their resources carefully and plan accordingly. It's almost like you have a degree of control over the game. I've always preferred those champions to ones that just do straight up damage.
Another support I like, but have never learned to play, is Lulu. I think she's really powerful in the right hands, and I have a lot of respect for people that play Lulu. I know in higher ELO her and Janna are despised because fights are hard to come by, and their kits are designed around disengaging. I think it's genius though.
