Spell Vamp might see real use if AoE only reduced it to 50% effectiveness.
Right now spell vamp the check list for spell vamp being a worthwhile option is -
- High single target spell DPS
- Need for health sustain
- Can afford to take a hit to damage and/or tankiness to get sustain
This basically comes down to
- Vlad, who has his Q to satisfy 1, his health costs and short range to satisfy 2, and his AP to HP passive to satisfy 3.
- Akali, who has her Q and R, her melee range to satisfy 2, and her passive and hybrid scaling to satisfy 3 as she doesn't take a hit to damage for getting gunblade.
Many champions that could benift from spellvamp are gutted by the fact that they do primarily AoE damage - even if they are hitting three minions with their spells to get an equivalent amount off healing, they are killing minions off too fast for it to really matter.
ADC's with life steal get the full healing for every minion they kill, while a Mage with AoE gets 1/3 the HP for killing the same minions, assuming we are comparing BT to Gunblade, even less if the mage is using WotA.
Its not that AoE spells can't heal you fast enough, its that everything dies before you can vamp and appreciable amount. Let AoE heal for half, rather than a third, would make it a much more useful stat for a large section of the champion pool.
If this becomes problematic for the abuse cases (Vlad and Akali, mostly), spell vamp as a whole could be reduced slightly - Regardless, having such a large difference between single target and AoE makes abuse cases more pronounced, not less.
