Anyone else sick of getting chat bans, etc for lashing out against trolls and other toxic players?

I just received a 10 game chat restriction for a game in which I was utterly reamed out by a complete child that found it appropriate to flame me for everything that went wrong in the game. I'm not denying that I lost my cool, but the fact is, I was NOT the aggressor. Now, I will not be getting hextech crafting mats for God knows how long, I might be ineligible for ranked rewards (probably fine on this front, but the threat is still there), and I have a paralyzing fear of using the chat, as I know that my account is now flagged and the slightest infraction will likely land me with a more severe punishment. I have kept my account clean for over a year without even a warning (I used to have a anger management issue, so this is a big deal for me). Now, I feel like I'm right back where I started solely because of a complete asshat in a ranked game that went out of his way to incite rage in his/her teammates.

Edit: if a rioter sees this and posts my chat logs, I'd just like to say the following: context is everything, and the VAST majority of the comments I made in the game posted in my reform card were in response to equally toxic remarks from another player.

You are responsible for your own actions. If you are negative, you deserve the punishment. No matter what the person you flamed said/did, you do not get a blank check to act negatively in response.

You missed literally 100% of the point I was making. And in real life, when someone bullies you, you are supposed to stand up for yourself. This is no different.

No. That's not quite how it works.

You ignore them. You leave the area if possible. You report them to a proper authority. You may even ask them to stop. But you do not retaliate.

I've seen a lot of people talk about "defending" themselves, but I'm going to be frank here: in real life, self-defense is actually a last resort. And that's if your life is in danger. On the internet, on a game where the worst someone can do is spout vile things, what you're supposed to do to "defend" yourself is mute them.

In real life, it's not so easy, but here it is. So there's really no excuse for your behavior. For example:

Soraka glhf Teemo OMG YOU FA[chat log has been removed] Soraka sigh Soraka mutes Teemo Soraka the rest of the 20-40 minute game is spent in bliss

There have been games where I muted someone within the first five minutes of the game and suffered no gameplay repercussions for it. If it were that easy in real life, I would certainly take that option any day. Retaliating just adds to the stress, ya know?

Muting is a willingness to put yourself/your team at a disadvantage. To say otherwise is categorically incorrect, and if there is even a snowballs chance in hell of victory I will not do it.

Being distracted by (and likely responding to) a flaming teammate puts you at a much greater disadvantage. It splits focus away from what's important and creates an enemy on your own team.

Most flamers aren't looking to communicate useful game knowledge anyway, they're much more focused on telling you how you failed your flash than mentioning the enemies flash is down.

Smart pings make it so there's extremely little relevant information you'll miss out on by muting someone.

If someone is flaming enough that you would "lash out" against them, then you're putting yourself at a disadvantage by not muting them. To say otherwise is categorically incorrect.

There is a reason pings exist. To say otherwise is categorically incorrect, because that is a form of communication that exists within the game and needs no words.

I apologize, but it seems you are categorically incorrect here.

Mute everyone, Unless you think League is a hair salon you really have no reason to chat to anyone. If your a "flamer" are someone that gets upset easily you should just mute everyone and not waste your time by using the chat.

Muting doesn't solve the problem. I play to win, and muting directly opposes this mentality. Even if there's a slight chance that the asshat will fix himself/herself and get with that program, I will not mute.

I was once a person that got tilted when I saw my teammates or enemy say stuff like "gg" "rekt" "report" etc but being that I mute everyone I can now just 100% focus on my gameplay without being concerned about my teammates and the 100% useless shit that they say. I don't waste my time on trying to communicate anything to anyone mainly because they won't listen or care so why should I.

Sure some players chat out summoner 12 summoner 7 timers but it's rare and I for 1 will take the chance to have someone muted and miss out on a potential kill if only I had known about the enemy having no Flash over not hearing any of the shitt in everyday solo Q from a bunch of randoms.

Hope you take my advice and if not I still wish you the best of luck good sir

But here's the thing: if I mute my teammates and the enemy team doesn't, then I am at a disadvantage. Plain and simple, and this is why I use the mute function as a temporary relaxation period at the absolute most. I feel as though re-instituting the tribunal would be a much more effective means of solving this problem then this "just mute them" concept. In fact, Riot even says in the pregame tips that muting is not an excuse to be toxic. By their own logic, to ban a player for lashing out against toxicity is wrong.

Not 100% sure but I think/thought the Tribunal was decided among the average Joe(league players). Most players will not really "take" the time reading 20 sentences of toxic bs to finally come up with their verdict instead they will most likely will want both toxic players banned 2 less toxic people to deal with for them in the future.

The mute option will always be there and at the moment you can either mute them or do what your doing now which is hoping for something that might not come back.

I have nothing else to say about the subject dude sorry, but if you do respond to this I WILL read what you have to say being it's your post and you should have the "last word" laters

Nah, the VAST majority of people took the Tribunal seriously (those that didn't never really logged in to vote). Also, you got a very small IP prize if you voted with the majority, so there was definitely incentive to get your cases right. And since you were limited in the number of cases you could vote on in a 24 hour window, spaming the "vote to ban" or "vote to pardon" button wasn't really efficient. All in all, the Tribunal was renowned for its accuracy and success, the only downside was how long it could take a player to be punished. Riot has decided that arbitrary bans doled out by a bot are better because it's "instant feedback". I'd rather have more accuracy personally, and so do most actual players outside of Riot. And another thing with the Tribunal, it would post the ENTIRE chat log, not just the reported player, so you could read the whole thing and get everything in context. I can't tell you how many times I voted to pardon someone that got reported for "verbal abuse" after being told to kill himself, die of cancer, drink bleach, etc. There is literally 0 justice in banning someone that has just gotten fed up with dealing with that shit. And in actuality, I believe that being banned like this actually promotes toxicity. I can tell you that I am more angry now that I've been banned than I was before, and what's worse, the person that flamed me didn't get any form of punishment at all (or at least not for that game, as I did not receive the notification). I am now MUCH more likely to be toxic in my future games, regardless of how hard I try to keep calm simply because I'm so triggered. But Riot doesn't actually care about solving toxicity, they just care about their numbers. Did you know that Riot actually had data published in Nature? Like, top of the line scientific journal. THAT'S what they care about. Not making the best game for their community, but making themselves more money, and if this season has told us anything, it's that they will actively attempt to discourage people from playing their game to do it.

Your team mates are usually garbage ass noobs. I don't see how there is any disadvantage to muting out their rubbish ideas.

MonkeyMadness1 votes

Because this is a team game, and even if people are being assholes to each other, I prefer to be able to chat and coordinate.

I had a recent chat ban that I eventually cleared through. Losing out on Hextech rewards wasn't worth it for me. Know what I started doing ? As soon as someone even begins talking shit to me, I /mute all. Up to today I did it, after a couple seconds, wasn't bothered at all and as a bonus I actually played a whole lot better. I was able to completely focus on what needed to be done to win without other people's garbage thoughts fuckin with me. I think I might just start mute all by default when I solo from now on. My focus was so clear when I couldn't read all the bellyaching bullshit that usually goes on in a typical game.

Opting out of chat puts you at an incredible disadvantage though...

I've never felt this. There is nothing about tactics anyone would want to say that could not be communicated by pings.

Split pushing, group up, exhaust (specific target), teleport top to shove out the wave, ward here, sweep here, and this is what I thought up in the 20 seconds before I had to leave to pick my champ.

I decided to looked you up. You're Platinum and I'm a low elo scrub. Maybe at the Platinum level communication is vital, I can't say as I've never played at that level, but down here, I don't need to tell my team shit to be effective. People are all toxic asshole down here anyway. Not like they have anything to say of worth most of the time.

At plat, comms wins games. Riot and some of the self righteous kids don't believe that, but if comms were not necessary to win at a high level, you wouldn't see pros with those ridiculously expensive noise cancelling headphones.
