"You should budget 45 mins per game"; Dodging and the next big problem to fix
I'm someone who plays by the unwritten rules. If I'm not comfortable with a champ, I don't take them to ranked. If someone is being a troll in champ select because they got filled, I offer to switch. And I always make sure I don't have a hard deadline in either Ranked or Normals.
But predicting time allocated for games has been a difficult concept for awhlie. I planned to spend 45 minutes gaming before I hit the highway, but then I had 6 lobby dodges and a remake. So who's wrong here? That comes out to 65 minutes because of this auxiliary commitment. It's never acceptable to AFK period, but in Ranked that has up to a 10 game ramification on 4 other people. You failing to plan correctly adversely affects 40 games (potentially). If there's a question, I personally play Normals because while an AFK still really sucks and is in no way condoned, it's a one-game problem, not a potentially 40 game problem.
If we're going to change things, we're going to have to hurt a few people. And we're going to have to not care. If you can benefit 80% of the playerbase, do we really care about 20%? Solutions to this problem aren't hard. You could easily say "If you dodge, it's a 24 timer to play again." Technically speaking, that would dramatically reduce dodging. Solutions are a dime a dozen, balance is the coin of the realm. If you're asking for opinions you'll get as many answers as there are people writing, but at some point we need to make a choice.
We also have the option (in the discussion at least) of not changing the penalties but the system. While should we completely reset our picks, positions, teams, and bans just because one idiot didn't like the role they got? Why, when someone declines a game, do we have to wait not only for the timer to end, but for the matchmaking to find someone else? There isn't a legion of people waiting to play?
And finally, another option we ought to explore is the potential for mutual benefit. If there isn't a legion of people waiting to play, and I find that hard to believe personally, then let's create some incentives. If I had the option of being the "relief guy" for dodges and declines - meaning I'd walk in with teams built, roles assigned, and bans in place, but I'd get some sort of minor reward for waiting in the wings, not only would you streamline the system, but there's maybe 5% of the playerbase willing to do that.
As FDR once said "Above all else, do something" and history has been kind to. If we can risk the fate of a nation, surely we can risk a patch or two attempting to resolve a system which increases the liklihood that more dodging will happen, and "I have to leave" is all too common.
I look forward to your thoughts.
