One of the biggest mistakes I see people make when they're trying to climb out of low elo

HateDaddy··51 votes·6,360 views

It has nothing to do with in-game performance. It's when people in low elo try to play every role, try to play carry style champions and end up just feeding or performing poorly.

Want a good tip to help you climb and improve? Select a role to main and become at least decent at support (it doesn't take much mechanical skill outside of Thresh so it's a matter of at least understanding match-ups). Pretty much everyone at one point or another will get forced to support but very rarely will you get forced to ADC If you srent an ADC main, mid if you aren't a mid main and top of you aren't a top main.

After you select a role, focus on a certain style of champions. Do you play hard carry champions that are focusing more on damage and/or diving? Do you play better with a more utility based champion for peeling or starting fights and generally being disruptive. Select a small pool of champions to become good at that fits your playstyle then focus on your gameplay and what you can perform better at each game. This, by far, is the most effective way to climb and helps you improve as you're climbing. Whenever you aren't climbing, focus on playing other roles to at least have 1-3 champions in all roles in the rare occurance you get forced into a role that you're not good at that isn't support.

I'm not trying to insult good support players either, but the position is by far the least demanding mechanically of any role (but has a very deep level of knowledge required to perform well in the higher you get). It's just that in lower elo, even in higher elo, as long as you play smart, you won't be feeding and you aren't auto losing 2v2 lanes which often lose the game. Give your team a chance to help you out when you're matched up against a good support.

The other point I'm making here is that I see people with 50+ champions played and that's hard to maintain consistency with if you aren't highly skilled and don't have the time to constantly practice that (I don't even have time to do that tbh). It's better to try and have this approach from the beginning because this enables you to lay out a foundation for you to be successful on once you get going in ranked and start climbing and you can build off this.

Pretty much half of the high elo community will tell you to do the opposite- play what you feel like and what's fun, and the rating will climb naturally. It's not something I do myself, but I've read it enough times to mention it.

That only works if you have time to spam 500+ games in order for the skill rate to naturally fall in line with your winrate. Overall, that's a pretty ineffective way to climb if you aren't significantly better than the elo you're at from the start, which 9.5/10 people aren't. In fact, even in high elo that's a shitty way to climb. I don't know which high elo player said that, but they're dumb if they think that's how you improve and climb. There's no focus or starting point to build off of with a method like that, you'd just be playing for shits at that point and after maybe 2000 games you'd climb. But who the fuck has time for that or wants to do that? If you do, then more power to you.

Ive asked challenger tier streamers whats the best way to climb, and ive been told the exact thing he said. At this point, I just discredit people who say "play whats fun and youll climb" no you play what youre good at.

you're stalking the wrong threads then. If you want to climb, you don't play different champs every other games. You master 1 champ until the point where you don't have to even think about how to use them or their abilities anymore and you can focus on other aspects of the game. If youre playing different champs all the time you will never fully understand on to use them.

The only goal in this game is to take down the enemy nexus. "Mastering" (if that's even possible) a champion can do a lot, but so can devoting the same amount of time to strategy and teamwork. Hypothetically.

"strategy and teamwork" go back to my last point. You wont be able to focus on those as much if you have to think about how your champion works. Not sure what threads you are talking about but i'll tell you right now they are really wrong. If you want to climb, best way hands down is 1 roll and 1 champ you enjoy. Learn to play them and youll climb. If you're just playing for fun, then you're not really playing to climb. This thread is about climbing

I've got to tell you, I've mained Jinx almost exclusively since October/November (that tail end of the Lucian-Thresh meta was brutal). She fits like a glove on me. My mechanics, my cs have gone up, my deaths have gone down, I'm still the same low bronze elo I was before.

There is more to climbing to playing one champion of role. You really just need to accept that. It's a fact. You don't need to do it to get good. At all.

it makes climbing easier. You could be Teemo hard countering a Nasus but if that's your first game teemo and this guy is a master at Nasus and knows how to play the matchup, odds are he is going to stomp you still. There is more to climbing elo but playing dozens of champs is going to slow you down. Sorry if you cant realize that but its the truth any real high elo person will tell you.

well you're bronze 4, last time I was ranked I was silver 5. I don't play ranked much. Mostly normal with my friends against golds and plats. I've never been below Bronze 1 and I've escaped it 3 times never losing a game in my promo series and even skipping my promo series all together the last time because my MMR was that high. I'm currently doing my promotion games to get my rank again. Im currently 5 wins 2 loses against high silvers low golds. It's no surprise with your reasoning that you are still bronze 4. Sorry to tell you this but until you figure out that the way you are doing it is wrong, you will continue to be bronze 4. Good luck in your climb, but you won't be getting anywhere with the way you are doing it

im not saying its the only way to climb out. Im saying its the right way to do it to LEARN to climb out. Like I've already said, you are not going to learn the game properly(objective taking and proper map control) when you are learning a new champion all the time. Its not hard to understand but clearly is the reason you are stuck in low bronze. dedicate some time to figuring out why this is true and boom, youll start climbing.

If you take a gander at our Farmer friend's match history you will discover they play Jinx at least 50% of the time. They are following the method you stated and it isn't working for them.

Canechurch3 votes

Match history is a bit limiting. On paper, looking at his ranked games, he's playing quite well, and does play a shit ton of jinx. Part of the problem may be ADC in bronze though.

Part of the story is that different shit is needed to carry through different tiers. I agree with the advice, learn one champion or type of champions (making myself really good specifically at Ahri and kitey/pokey type champs in general) has helped me shoot up. Just find something that clicks with you, learn the meta game, and build that map awareness.

The big advantage to knowing a champ inside and out is it lets you focus on things like "how it trades", csing, whats going on on the map etc. which helps you learn those skills.

T RexHasTinyArms2 votes

More likely the reason that he's not climbing out of low bronze is that he's spaming jinx games w/out specific focus on what to improve each game. He said his CS improved, deaths went down, etc, so maybe he is focused on improving specific aspects but more likely he's just practicing and getting a little better.

Instead of insulting him it might be useful to point out a more efficient way of doing what you suggest. Focus on learning something specific each game you play w/ the champ. For instance, practice CS in customs till you do it well, then focus on getting every CS possible for your next five jinx games. Play lane like normal but focus on any chance you have to get cs. You'll notice spots where you go for a trade instead of cs, stop that shit and get the cs, you'll see spots where you time your auto wrong bc you're worried about something the enemy is doing and you can change that. A bronze adc who can get 80 CS by 10 EVERY game, will be super fed consistently and start winning a lot more. (Hell I'm not an adc, but in low gold a lot of the ones I play w/ don't average over 70 @10 for their last 15 games, so it should be a massive advantage if he's at 70 or 80 every game) Once he gets there he can start focusing on trading as often as possible in lane and improving trades (even if the CS dips 5-10 @10 he'll still be well above his old average and average for bronze, and then learning trades will keep his enemy down and so he ends up even more in terms of difference).

TLDR; You're just insulting him instead of trying to help him by suggesting ways he probably isn't focusing his learning if he plays the majority of his games as Jinx and is still going even remotely even with bronze level ADC players.

If you pick a champion that you like can be quite fun and if you get bored you can change midways. For example I really like Sejuani playstyle so I started playign with her from b4 to b1. By then I was kinda ored of her so I changed i started playing annie mid from b1-s4. Got bored again so I change to vi/xin and so on. as long as you stay with the same champion for several matched you can climb up until gold.... above that you will have to play a single champion (one trick pony) or invest 8-10 hours of your day in league which not many of us can really afford.

AbodyHUN6661 votes

Actually even gold isn't that hard, not even platinum. As long as you are a good shotcaller you can manage with a relatively small champion pool while sticking to 1 game a day. At least that's how I got to gold 3 last season. Even my brother who takes weeks of breaks from playing league stays in plat 2-3, and could even get to diamond if he wouldn't be playing Divinity with his friend all the time. xD

T RexHasTinyArms7 votes

Depends. The suggestion is generally to find something you really enjoy that fits your style. You will learn faster and be more willing to focus on one or two champs if you really enjoy them. Some people need more than this limit to stay interested because they don't have any champs they particularly enjoy. However, I played a decent amount over 150 games on 1 champ climbing from bronze to gold (prob 80% of my games once I picked it up), and only after that many games have I started to be like "you know, I kinda want to play something different this game." I love the champ and was just having so much fun I always wanted to get better at him and learn something every game, so it wasn't until I started learning slower and not improving as much (bc I'm kinda shitty at this game :P) that I started wanting to play other stuff any.

AbodyHUN6661 votes

Well, you can have a bigger champion pool, but I never play more than 3 champions for my main roles. As you get better with your mains you will learn their damage and cooldowns more and more making sick plays more often.

I had nearly 200 ranked Karma games last season and never felt bored with her. You just need to find a champ who really agrees with you.

T RexHasTinyArms1 votes

This also assumes that because you like it and it's fun you will invest the time to get good enough at it to climb. If you aren't good at something you won't climb and any high elo player would agree (look at all the unranked to diamond/challenger type stuff that is about how you can climb if you know what to be doing).

The issue is people with large champion pools who want to play every position, and are then mad when they don't climb. I started in bronze this season and hit gold (I'm pretty shit at the game, but I got decently better at least so I make enough good calls that all the times I forget to zhonyas balance out most games :P) For me it was important to focus on just a few champs that I had to know so I could learn match ups and win conditions. It made things stable across games in terms of my champs and so it was easier to see the impact of how I changed certain decisions (which is essential if you're like me and not able to account for all the variables at once as you're learning). Now when I go back and play normals (which are still bronze elo on the account), or the second account that I leveled w/ my friend when he learned (started bronze now silver) I know enough that I can play pretty much anything that fits the style I like to play and do well, but I had to get better to do it.

If you're looking to get better play what is fun and you'll be more likely to invest the effort to get good at it bc you enjoy it. However, until you're diamond, there are probably enough things to still learn you shouldn't do it all at once if you want to do it in a timely manner (like in one season). I play mid/top/probably support too all at low/mid gold level, and I can play jungle nunu at that level too (weaker on other jgs), but I never learned to ADC and would be bronze ADC if I played it. The time it would have taken me to bring my ADC skill up to silver level would probably have kept me high silver in my main roles too because I'd have split my focus.

This is my top. I can manage a 50/50 win rate as a support, I'm marginally better at adc and jungle, and I think significantly better at Mid than my current ranking (gold II, demonstrated by my fairly obscene win rate in the last few weeks), but when I top I basically just feed unless it's gnar, but even that I'm not great at. I just get dumpstered on at top.

T RexHasTinyArms1 votes

So you're stronger at this game then me, so this may not work above my elo, but have you considered reducing the amount you play top or playing things that don't belong there when you are top?

I'm not saying trolling or anything like that, and I'm sure you don't play top often now, but it's one of the roles you don't often get "stuck with." I stopped playing ADC a little while back (legitimately don't have any on the account any more bc I had rito delete champs on my account so I would have a strong chance at any mystery skin being something I really wanted) and saying I can play anything but ADC generally keeps me from having to do it. Once or twice teams have wanted me to (or even had me do it) and I'll play heimerdinger bot lane instead of an ADC, he pushes fast w/ turrets, zones well vs enemy adc to keep them from getting strong in mid game (although lanes w/ large sustain can be a problem), and his spike mid game is often strong enough to win. I'm more likely to win w/ that than playing ADC so it makes sense. There may be mid picks or something (you said you're a decent adc and vayne top is a thing for instance, and vlad, heimer, cass, cho, dianna, kass, karth, and others are all mids that can go top) that you play better than traditional top lane picks that will give you a better chance of winning.

Finally let me pose a hypothetical about dodging based on math. Assuming that you're not in a promo series, the cost of a dodge is 3 lp. If you're climbing a loss is between 12 and 18 lp usually (12 is a bit low but that will work for this), so even being conservative w/ the numbers a loss is worth 4-6 dodges. Then it becomes about doing the math on win rate, for instance if you are 45-55 as top lane (a losing record but not terrible) you would go 9-11 over 20 games. Even if we assumed that one loss canceled one win, the 2 extra losses only give you 12 dodges at most, so it is worth playing the games. However, if we increase you getting dumpstered to a win rate of 30-70, those same 20 games give you a record of 6-14, and the extra 8 losses even with the minimum of 12 LP loss per game (4 dodges) would give you 32 games for a break even point, and dodging every single one of the 20 games would earn you 20 games worth of time you don't have to play a role you don't like, and 36 LP.

Obviously those numbers are oversimplified because you don't lose as much as you gain if you're climbing, and you generally don't lose or win the same amount of LP every game. However, it proves two points: 1) there is a break even point somewhere that a bad enough percentage in a particular role makes dodging every game you get that role a profitable strategy (outside of promos), and 2) if you're even close to that point it may be worth it to do if you don't enjoy the role you're bad at. Personally if 20 games is gonna put me within 2 wins of the same LP as dodging them all I would prefer to have to win an extra two games rather than play 20 games of something I don't enjoy. Anyway, just something to consider.

Canechurch1 votes

Oh I do it entirely to myself. Once in a blue moon I HAVE to top. I just occaisonally get stupid and pick if over support. It's my own fault entirely. I was just empathizing. It's good advice though! Haha

T RexHasTinyArms1 votes

:P I can understand that. I've played some jg games that weren't nunu even though I know my nunu jg is way stronger than my other jgs bc I can usually keep the enemy from getting buffs/drags/barons ever. I just am closer to that stupid silver 1 gold 5 divide, and doing the little stuff like never playing ADC and figuring out dodge rates vs win rates to gain LP are probably what helped me land in gold the second or third promo series I hit. (Went on tilt really bad after I hit promos for gold IV and lost, and haven't been as focused so I should probably get back to it)

As others have said, learn a couple of champions and a carry role (top, mid, adc) and a supportish role (support, jungle). Playing "whatever you feel like" is a good way to get nowhere.

Having to deal with both in bot lane, I'd honestly rather have a kind of crappy adc over a kind of crappy support. An ADC often can't protect or save a crappy support, but crappy ADCs can still be saved from themselves with a good Thresh lantern or Janna ult. I'd argue that the support's skill is a larger factor in deciding a lane.

True to a point. You can save an adc in lane. But if their positioning sucks in teamfights, you better have gotten them really, REALLY fed in laning so you can just steamroll the enemy in teamfights, or you're going to have a tough time late.

Osmigos1 votes

As a support main, I think that's largely because you rarely ever have to deal with a good support on the opposing team. 9 times out of 10 the enemy support doesn't really seem to know what they're doing and I can just dump all over them in lane phase. The ease of winning bot lane as a dedicated support player is one of the things I really enjoy about the role. Actually climbing as a support though... >.>

That's why I mained support first then picked my other role. I understood how important a good support is and most people don't. No I'm just a bot lane main because I will easily play either of the roles.

I play a shitload of Normals with a champ before I even think of taking them into ranked. I'm a top main, Nasus Darius Fiora gonna get me out of bronze lol

Try out Heimerdinger top lane. He's stupid strong in bronze. No one tp's right in bronze so you can take heal or exhaust or ignite and 1v2 top and enemy jg consistently. You can also dive at 6 pretty easy w/ his ult q, q, then e and w. Q and ult q don't draw tower aggro until they laser so enemy takes dmg before you start in w/ spells and then dies :D (Also takes baron/dragon easy and pushes fast)

Heimerdinger top seems pretty scummy, I have seen other people play it but it only seems to work against people who refuse to build magic resist.

You should have a fall back, not nescessarilly a second main but someone who you can use that won't be a detriment to your team do to lack of experience.

AbodyHUN6661 votes

You should always have a go to champion for each role, and some roles have quite similar requirements. For example mid and top are quite similar, just different champions. Jungle cah also be relatively easy to fit in next to support, as last hitting isn't it's main point and a lot of the game knowledge and objective control are shared bpoints between the roles.

IcyPepper1 votes

I see... I can't seem to top with anyone. Who's noob-friendly until I can top decently?

AbodyHUN6661 votes

Nasus is said to be easy to play, since all you have to worry about is not to die and get cs. If you are more agressive Renekton is pretty easy too and he wins lane most of the time.

TotalJerk1 votes

I disagree. Mid is more obligated to roam and contest objectives, while a top laner has to be able to lane independently because

  1. ganks are harder to escape
  2. it's in the jungler's best interest to not have to repeatedly come up there to help
  3. The jungler isn't likely to give you buffs.

If you're good at them/have the time to keep up in practice with them and consistently do well, it's totally fine. Realistically, most people have 2 roles they excel in, one their main and the other their secondary. If I don't get top, I ask for jungle.
