Math behind thornmail and misconceptions regarding lifesteal

Figured I'd repost this here since I see people questioning thornmail's effectiveness and counters a lot. Item values probably have changed slightly but the math stays the same regardless

Thornmail is calculated before mitigation, whereas life steal is calculated after mitigation; this single fact changes a lot. Thornmail becomes stronger the more armor you have, and because of this, the amount of lifesteal someone needs to simply break even with the damage thornmail deals to them is absurd.

Example: Say (hypothetically) an Amumu with thornmail has 100 armor with thornmail's passive and an ashe is autoattacking him who has 0 MR. (This is hypothetical to show the point). Assume ashe crits amumu for 1000 before mitigation.

With 100 armor, he takes 50% less damage, so he takes 500 damage and thornmail deals 300 (30% of 1000). Ashe would need 60% Lifesteal to match that With 200 armor, he takes 2/3 less damage, so he takes 333 damage and thornmail still deals 300. Ashe would need need 90% Lifesteal to match that. With 300 armor, he takes 75% less damage, so he takes 250 damage and thornmail still deals 300. Ashe would need 120% lifesteal to match that.

Now you can account for someone who has MR, since thornmail's damage is magic. Squishy carries (melee or ranged) typically have somewhere between 40-85 MR based on runes and masteries and items like GA or QSS or what not, a bit more for melees.

At 40 MR, the damage from thornmail is reduced to 5/7. Using the same example from above, thornmail deals 300 * 5/7 = 214 damage back to a 40 MR ashe.

At (Amumu's) 100 armor, she'd deal 500 damage and would need 43% lifesteal. At 200 armor, she'd deal 333 damage and would need 64% lifesteal to break even with thornmail At 300 armor, she'd deal 250 damage and would need 85% lifesteal to break even with thornmail.

At 85 MR, ashe would take 54% reduced damage down to 162 from thornmail. Using this MR value: She'd need 32% lifesteal to BREAK EVEN with thornmail at 100 armor She'd need 49% lifesteal to BREAK EVEN with thornmail at 200 armor She'd need 65% lifesteal to BREAK EVEN with thornmail at 300 armor.

But Wait, now take into account if ashe doesn't get a QSS/GA right away and instead goes for last whisper! Now she's back to 40 MR but the armor values change due to LW.

100 armor goes to 65 armor, ashe deals 606 damage, thornmail deals 300*(100/140) = 214 damage, she needs 35% lifesteal to match thornmail's damage 200 armor goes to 130 armor, ashe deals 438 damage, thornmail deals 214 still, she needs 49% lifesteal to match thornmail's damage. 300 armor goes to 195, ashe deals 339 damage, thornmail deals 214 still, she needs 63% lifesteal to break even with thornmail's damage.

Now assume end game, when the carry has their MR item of choice and has 85ish MR along with a Last Whisper. Thornmail here deals 162 damage again but the armor values are adjusted due to LW.

At 100 Armor, (so actually 65 Armor), Ashe deals 606 damage, she needs 27% lifesteal to break even. At 200 Armor, (so actually 130 Armor), Ashe deals 438 damage, she needs 37% lifesteal to break even. At 300 Armor, (so actually 195 Armor), Ashe deals 339 damage, she needs 48% lifesteal to break even.

As you can see, the lifesteal values someone needs to even match thornmail's damage are ridiculous in all scenarios. As you can also see, Thornmail becomes much more effective the more armor the wearer of it has in all scenarios. Thornmail is most effective against targets without mixed damage on hit type skills, such as ashe, draven, miss fortune, tryndamere. It is a lot less effective against champions with mixed damage on hits, such as Irelia, Jax, Vayne etc. For these guys, Omen and Frozen Heart are more effective due to the AS slow, but everyone knew that already. Thornmail is most effective at high values of armor, meaning it is a heavy resist building tank/fighter item, not a carry item that wants a bit of defense to last.

Tl;dr Thornmail is not countered by lifesteal. The life steal values an autoattacker would need to simply break even with thornmail's damage return is ridiculous and completely unrealistic in a 5v5 game. At realistic values of life steal , thornmail deals way more than the life steal benefits the autoattacker. Also, thornmail becomes much, MUCH more effective the more armor the wearer has. MR counters thornmail better than lifesteal does

And then you get murdered by their AP because you spent gold on +300 armour.

^This.

Also, while this math shows thornmail is good at its job, the bigger question is whether that's worth giving up the alternative items. How important is it to make the Ashe slowly kill herself versus just zoning her or even building damage and trying to kill her faster? This all changes game to game, and thornmail's probably better in the tank meta than it was before, but I personally think the item is still overrated because of how well LW chews through it.

Never. Except if ennemies are noobs. The paradox of thormnail is : it counter harder adc but is easily countered by item like botrk, malmortius, ga etc. randuin counter a little less but you cannot counter it, so this is a better investment against good people.

Here is a good example of what does thornmail against pure noobs : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeTCMmWi3d0 That's why you keep seeing in forum that thornmail is too op and uncouterable (wtf ? lol). it's because noobs have no clue how to deal with this item.

AP Burst

Like it exists after the removal of DFG and nerf to all AP Burst champs.

And lets not forget how most AP champs are now forced to get RoA over DFG early else they don't survive in late game team fights.

I'd like to introduce you to my good friend Malzahar. Also known as the flying arab. or Mal'Zahar in the void. He mourns the lose of dfg, but would like to assure you, that if you dont get on your knees, (preferably with at least 300mr) and Bl----- Bow to the void. He will still use his combo to hundred to one your 4k hp, 300 armour ass. especially if he catches you dancing on his disco floor. If he builds pen and ryliandries. He doesnt give a crap about your 300 mr either.

Noam Braumsky1 votes

Last I checked Malz is a heavily dps centered mage. I'd say Ahri , Brand , or Fizz have a lot of ap burst even after DFG removal.

A Tall Joke1 votes

Malzahar has a 100-0 rotation; he's essentially a burst mage and his combo worked well in the time allotted by DFG (4 seconds) so he fits the bill.

Brand is an AoE control mage. I don't think he qualifies as a burst mage and if he does burst you down, he's probably fed.

Noam Braumsky1 votes

I call Malzahar a pds mage because he has only 1 spell that deals all allotted damage at once.

malz is great except once you get out of bronze he is not viable due to his lack of speed.

Who said it needs to be burst? AP DPS is actually far more effective at killing tanks than burst, and champions like Brand Cassiopeia Malzahar Swain and Vladimir (who are almost all quite good in solo queue at the moment) are very effective at DPS-ing a tank to death.

Knight SoIaire 2 votes

but then you realise that you bought only thornmail frozen heart and randuins so you have that bonus hp and laugh at enemy apc

or even better get warmogh right after, and still aught at him because mr isnt required to counter an apc

Earl Eulrich4 votes

surly, it doesn´t directly counter the Thornmail...but you still lose less health than you´d do when attacking without lifesteal. And when you swap targets you regain the health you lost while killing the tank, so no troubles there. thornmail is an incredible specific item with only 1 real purpose: countering AAs. If it would be as easy to shut down with just lifesteal and a little MR there would be no reason to ever buy it.

This is a great post.

Your right, life steal does't counter thornmail, thornmail counters lifesteal.

Extreme Troller3 votes

yet thormnail is a bad item. because it doesnt counter on hit champ. like vayne or kog maw with botrk/wits end. Randuin in these scenario is much better in every case. Metagame is all about as reduction. with malphite, nasus, nunu anivia exhaust, 2.5as is reduced to 0.09as so thornmail is useless because carry can't hit you.

thormnail is only good for pure ap tank that have mpen (morde for example) + no cc, in a noob team when ad carry is not focused nor cced, and ad carry is noob enough to not have botrk and have 100 or less mr. (ad carry usually have 150mr and nowhere from 85MR LOL, because mercury, malmortius and mres rune is the meta for adcarry. This scenario NEVER occurs in 99% of games. If anything thornmail need a buff or need to be reworked. it's only good against noob for noob champion. it's a pure noob trap.

It does reflect BotRK - All physical damage from AAs.

Also, what ADCs buy Mercury's or Maw? It is normally one of either a Banshee's, GA or Mercurial Scimitar, isn't it?

lol wut. thormnail doesnt reflect botrk. every adc and bruiser buy maw lategame. it's too op 95ad, 400hp shield, and 40mr is very valuable. GA seems to lose its flavor especially in high elo lategame. people sell the ga for a maw when they proced the revive. mercurial is VERY situational while maw is good in every case, it's still the best ad item in the game right now (95ad), in average more like 80-85 in a fight.

Celeste Benal2 votes

item 3075: Upon being hit by a basic attack, returns 30% of the damage before armor is figured as magic damage. item 3153: basic attacks deal 8% of target's current health as physical damage.

Sure looks like it does to me. I think they call this an attack modifier, not an on-hit effect. Otherwise why would any ADC (Kalista comes to mind) ever buy it?

Do you really want to amp your AAs by 8% of target's health when you're getting 30% of that back as magic damage, especially when as an ADC you have only 30MR and gain 0 per level? Hope you remembered your scaling MR blues.

And no, not every ADC buys maw late game.

SouL1ess2 votes

Thornmail doesn't reflect BotRK.

BotRK is considered exactly on-hit and not an attack modifier (nothing is an attack modifier in league). The new damage display just compounded the numbers into the same display case. Doesn't mean there isn't two separate instances of damage, with one of them counting towards Thornmail reflection damage.

You can try attacking dragon and seeing two separate instances of damage pop up, as BotRK has a cap against monsters.

qetzel1 votes

The Wiki says that most on hit physical damage is also reflected. BotRK deals on hit damage. Why would it not be affected? "On being hit, Thornmail will reflect 30% of the physical damage dealt by the attacker, including most on-hit effects."

Meanwhile you get shit on by the AP carry and AD casters. TBH if the ADC is dumb enough to just stand there and shoot the tank in a team fight, they deserve to die.

Lifesteal counters thornmail, it just doesn't make it obsolete. Just like armor counters physical damage, that doesn't mean you don't take any, you just take less.

As said why get thornmail as a tank, tanks do a lot of dmg now.

Some out damaging the ADC.

So would building a Spirit Visage basically be hitting (maybe more than) two birds with one stone?

yes visage is the best thing to counter thornmail BT or BotRK + last whisper + visage = no longer care about thornmail

IcyPepper2 votes

the amount of lifesteal someone needs to simply break even with the damage thornmail deals to them is absurd.

Whoa whoa whoa, you should never break even when it comes to defense against damage. That's like saying there should be a point where armor completely negates attack damage. Lifesteal is a defensive dueling stat, and therefore its offensive counterpart (thornmail) should outscale it.

When people say lifesteal counters thornmail, they're referring to how armor "counters" attack damage and magic resist "counters" magic damage. It doesn't completely negate it, and if it did it would be horribly imbalanced. There would be no point in building the anti-adc tank/bruiser item if adcs could ignore it like that.

LilxPaprika1 votes

I'd like to see how lifesteal could perform if say 50% of it ignored defenses. Kind of like Warwick's passive WW passive goes like:

_The healing portion is independent from the damage portion of the ability, meaning the heal is always the same regardless of the damage dealt to the target. _

Or create an item that gives true healing, made ampost about that: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/KH2sj6Av-item-lets-you-sustain-as-though-you-dealt-true-damage-active

I would overhaul it and start over from scratch but that's me. It would probably entail buffing tanks in other ways, or create more ways to reduce healing like a morellonomicon for tanks Im also confused about how resistances work and how they scale with max HP(difficulty wrapping my head around effective health). Wouldn't it be better to just have it reduce damage dealt?

it would need to be nerfed

LilxPaprika1 votes

it would need to be nerfed

It wouldn't really affect DPS champs vs DPS champs that don't stack resistances. And assuming the bruiser also has a form of sustain they would benefit from it just as much.

It would really come down to how it would effect tanks and mages.

I think if it came with a slight nerf to the much talked about last whisper/voidstaff, its effects wouldn't be as noticeable and tanks would actually tank better, in exchange sustain champs could sustain better vs tanks in particular. And if ap champs are heavily effected by a voidstaff nerf, they could receive some forms of magic pen intergrated into their kits. A few mages already have true damage and wouldn't feel it that much. Like velkoz ahri...

What if someone has aegis? Then what does the math come out to, Because honestly it feels like late game thornmail is usless against an adc because of bloodthirster the shield never ends with it. Tho i appreciate the math behind all this, blooththirster is a direct coutner to thornmail. No matter how much armor or mr you have. The BT shield just keeps them alive.

Hey question, with Bork's buff coming 5.8, will this help with the equations, since the damage you're dealing with Bork's passive will also be healing you?

junglerboy161 votes

Nobody ever said lifesteal negates thornmail (or if they did they don't know what in the hell they're talking about). Lifesteal counters thorn mail, in the same way that thorn mail counters lifesteal. That is why nobody ever says "just buy BT and you're all set!" they also say buy MR and armor pen. Lifesteal's purpose in this situation is to negate enough return damage that the ADC has a chance to kill the tank before the tank kills them, not outright cancel out the damage you're receiving.

Critmaster Garen1 votes

youre not gonna reach 300 armor though, because that ashe has a last whisper, armor pen masteries and flat penetration runes. shes gonna cut your fancy 300 armor down to 150. and if youre really unlucky, someone on the enemy team has a cleaver to stack on that.

and what if the ashe has bork + bloodthirster and spirit visage as her defensive item instead?

remember that neither the bork active, nor the passive are affected by thornmail right now.

Champion Skin1 votes

MF does actually deal magic damage with her ult and on her basic attacks and this scale with her AD So wouldn't Frozen hearth or Randuins Omen be better against her for the same reasons as Jax/Vayne?

Saianna1 votes

From what i heard Thornmail doesn't return higher damage from crit (like crit doesn't count) Which also makes Last whisper + life steal + IE = tank killer

Also big flaw with Thornmail is = it deals magic damage. And every champion, even squishy ADC ends this game with ~60-70 MR. That's just enough to reduce magic damage by ~40%

That's why practice beats living shit out of theory..

Ahurath1 votes

Yeah you can't 1v1 a tank anymore but with the help of your team you can.

Finally the truth comes out. Thornmail is indeed overpowered.
