Need advice playing against Illaoi

HalcyonDweller··4 votes·694 views

Just played a terrible game against Illaoi. I know the basics of juking her skills and building Executioner's Calling, but what other things should I be doing to better play against her?

Any suggestions including items, playstyles, laning techniques, and counterpicks are welcome.

Literally just walk away. I'm serious, as an avid Illaoi player. She has zero tools to proactively pursue kills and is 100% reliant on her opponents willingly committing to fighting her. Just walk away.

Yeah and? Illaoi is a bully who is dead weight past 15 minutes because she's primarily good only in lane. Unless you're playing a champ who's equally useless outside of lane without kills like Pantheon you win just by not giving up kills.

Noted, thanks! I'll remember that.

Follow up question, it seems kind of unfair that the only way to fight a champion is to not fight them. Are there windows of opportunity I could be looking for? Or are those actually non-existent?

Any time she whiffs E. Any time there are no tentacles around her which you can clear out and even get gold for doing.

You need High Burst and CC. if you have a burst Jungler take a CC top or vise-versa. Don't fight her 1v1 post 6 she can get a bit nasty, but it is very important when she ults that you actively make an effort to dodge her tenticle slams. They move slow enough for most champions to move out of the way and if you are having some strungles get some Boots early on to help. Her tenticles do good damage and life steal quite a bit so yes executioners will be pretty effective and its a good buy. Ranged champions do a bit better vs her than Melee so maybe consider someone like Urgot or Gnar into her. Also try to kite her if you fight her on her terms with tenticles all over its dangerous, but if you can get her out of them shes weak. Unless you out number her don't try to engage on her let her try to fight you and play outside of her own kit.

Thanks! That's a lot of different kinds of useful tips :)

So I don't play a whole lot of Top, so I don't know match ups very well, but I can help with the other categories.

Items are very dependent on your champion. Anything that would help you kite is generally a good idea. For tanking, I could see getting an Adaptive helm with some armor items could go pretty well. In terms of actually slowing: Iceborn or Frozen Mallet for tanky/bruisers, Rylais for mages (the few that exist top right now), or Frost Queen's Claim if you're the support.

For playstyles, if you just wait out her cooldowns, primarily her ult or e, you can most likely win trades. You can also call out to your jungle if she's blown major cooldowns like her flash and ult and you can probably kill her and set her behind. If she falls behind, she can't do much.

For lane techniques, I'd suggest staying closer to the middle of the lane as to not be in danger of the wall tentacles. Also playing behind minions lets stay safe from her e which helps your trades a lot.

That's all I can really offer you, like I said, I don't play top much. I hope this helps at least a little bit![sg-ahri-2]
