Some thoughts on improving Aatrox

IMO his big issues right now:

  • Too one note on his Q being all of his damage (creates binary match ups)
  • Not really much of a niche, he's just there but he's good.
  • Kit isn't very synergistic because of his clunky caster nature combined with his unfitting revive ultimate, making him very reliant on his team for a supposedly and bad in SoloQ

I think what I would like to propose is something like this:

Passive grievous application scales from 40% to 80% healing reduction (Strong anti healer niche). Let its cooldown decrease with levels.

  • Raise his AS.

  • Reduce his Q's damage greatly but make the first two hits complete faster. Move the AD gains from his E to this spell. Deemphasizing his Q but still making it necessary to use the spell correctly to maximize your damage. This also lets him focus on using E solely for repositioning rather than using it as a cheap stat stick. Keep the delay on his third and maybe make it his primary knock up as well; turning the first two hits into mere slows would make his 3rd hit a more conscious and rewarding decision. I'm aware it's an inelegant solution considering his W already slows.

  • Maybe change his E to heal for a % of his health on landed sweet spots and passive procs. Incentivizes him more into Juggernaut-like play patterns and builds.

  • Change his R to the revive stacking through damage Aatrox deals. Every time he hits a champion or large monster, he adds a charge to his ultimate; basic attacks give you one, spells that land and passive procs give you more, and sweet spots give you three. Better agency is a big SoloQ buff because Aatrox has to do more than simply wait on a timer, and in return he relies less on his teammates stalling to keep him up for the revive to pop.

Making him more AA/combo based and using it more also helps shift him off his cheesy meta pseudo assassin playstyle and makes him require a little more engagement in trades and teamfights with a stronger reward for being more aggressive.

I think that this would be a good way to help make Aatrox both less bad and more functional as a champion if his damage pattern gets spread out more and he becomes more of a raid boss like his fantasy implies.

I would rather just increase it by a flat 10%, for a total of 50%.

Keep in mind that it's not just Grievous Wounds, it's Mutilation, which reduces Shield amount as well.

Aatrox is supposed to be a strong lane bully in the early game anyway, which is where his passive is supposed to shine the most.

Let its cooldown decrease with levels.

I wouldn't make the cooldown decrease with level personally.

Instead, I would reduce it down to a flat 20 seconds, and then let Basic Attacks reduce the cooldown by 1 second, in addition to the cooldown reduction he already gets from casting abilities.

Reduce his Q's damage greatly but make the first two hits complete faster. Move the AD gains from his E to this spell. Deemphasizing his Q but still making it necessary to use the spell correctly to maximize your damage. This also lets him focus on using E solely for repositioning rather than using it as a cheap stat stick.

This I agree with.

This would reward Aatrox for succesfully landing his Q's with more AD to deal more damage with the subsequent ones

Keep the delay on his third and maybe make it his primary knock up as well; turning the first two hits into mere slows would make his 3rd hit a more conscious and rewarding decision. I'm aware it's an inelegant solution considering his W already slows.

This I also agree with.

Maybe his W could Ground the target enemy for it's duration to compensate for the loss of knock-ups on his first two hits?

Change his R to the revive stacking through damage Aatrox deals.

This is really the change I want to see the most.

Not only would it give incentive to the Aatrox to just rush into the enemy team and wreak havoc, rewarding him for continously putting pressure on the enemy team by giving him a bigger revive on death, it would also make sense from a lore perspective (as Aatrox gains strength from the enemies he kills).

it should scale to 100% tbh I wasn't being extreme enough

I've been kinda saying this since day 1 of the rework, the Q needed less emphasis on being the only main damage spell he has, and be shifted to more of a combo aa user and not this uber assassin that builds full damage but cant get the full extent out of it. That way he can build slightly tankier, still do damage, and be able to have better sustain since it wont be gated behind how much damage he deals. I do say making it just solely on the passive proc and edges is a little rough, maybe he can get half value or something for everything else unless, Ravenous Hydra can return as a core item for him (Getting it now is kinda meh considering you're pretty pigonholed into rushing 40% cdr like Riven just to function well)

Hydra can be good on him vs a more squishy enemy team. It helps him farm faster and gives him back some of that sustain gutted from him when his E was nerfed into uselessness.

Yeah, but how are you gonna auto effectively when Q kinda makes that hard? You'll get like one or two autos if you get on top of a target who got pulled back by W or a target who got knocked up by Q3.

God I love these ideas OP... too bad Riot doesn't look at gem posts like these. Could someone with a Twitter or Reddit get this in front of them?

Maybe when they are ready for considering Aatrox changes/buffs. Shoving it in their faces 24/7 kinda doesn't help much, speaking about it is fine. Just look at Wukong mains who shoved that issue in Meddler's face pretty much 24/7 until enough was enough. Pretty much every mention of Wukong on those posts after the one where he got addressed was ignored, factual or not.

Again, im saying maybe, not never. Just trying to express caution.

idk anything about that. All I know is Riot doesn't see any of this and they need to.

Seconded. Get someone with a Twitter or Reddit to get this in front of Riot. Preferably NOT anyone at aatroxmains/reddit .... any dedicated fanbase is just... cringey...

I still kinda miss his old W, maybe they could take the heal and ad on his E and make something similar to it? Like switch between healing on damage to champs or just having the AD. It's probably a bad idea but it was a fun part of his kit switching between survivability and huge damage.
