I FINALLY figured out why you are matched based on MMR and not Rank.

I used to be like everyone else. "What the hell why am i fighting people higher than my rank if im proving im BETTER than the people in my rank?"

Then i figured it out. You arent trying to prove your better than people below you, you are proving you are at the rank you belong. Now if your wondering why this ties in to MMR let me explain.

Say you are Silver 5 but EASILY could reach Gold 3, your current MMR is high Silver 2. This means you would get matched with only Silver 5s.

Now the issue with this is wouldnt that cause the game to be unfun? Even Ranked is supposed to still have resemblance of a game. But if everyone in your games ALSO has MMR similar to you it makes sense they are fighting you. If you REALLY are gold 3 wouldnt it be MISSERABLE with Silver 5 teammates, cause thats where you were placed?

Im not saying the ranked system couldn't use some matchmaking balances, But THIS is why you are matched on MMR and not rank. Not so that you have to fight people a higher rank than you, but so that you can avoid being in a game surrounded by chimps.

Not only that but IMAGINE the queue times at higher levels.

The reason games are matched by MMR is so that games are relatively even, so neither is absolutely ramfucked. It's offset by higher LP gains and lower LP losses when you're against players of a higher MMR of your rank, and of course the converse is also true.

The only issue I have is that promotional series are absolutely asinine.

no that would be great. if I'm good enough to be in gold three I would love the shit on silver fives fours and threes on my way to gold three. When I get to gold three then I'll have good games.

That's basically correct. Matching by MMR gives higher quality games and that's the highest priority. Evaluating your rank comes second but it isn't slowed very much by that method.

No, it is much simpler than that. Me is a better representation of your current skill than lp rank so me is used for matchmaking.

In the first seasons there was only the MMR (iirc it was called ELO back then, for obvious reasons). The rank system came only much later, afaik because it was demanded by the players themselves.

I am proving I am Silver 5 by going 50% wins with Gold 3? Oh ok. Typo? If my MMR is Silver 2 I will be playing against Silver 2s not SIlver 5s.

The problem is also that MMR is "averaged" over your team. And often (please don't call lower ranks chimps) it seems I am on the team of 5 bronze vs a team of 5 silver. I don't know who MMR is expecting to carry vs a team of overall better players.
