Why is Evelynn's ultimate cool down so long?

Rew711··17 votes·4,934 views

I kind of want to know. She deals damage to multiple enemies, yes, but it at most deals 25 to 30% of the enemies HP also slowing them and gives her just 300 shield for a couple of seconds. I just want to know why it takes over 80 seconds to cool down. (I think thats with CD reductions I'd had but I don't know.) Evelynn doesn't have much, and that's her only real burst, can we lower it to about 70 or at most 65 by max level?

I can't say off the top of my head that I know exactly why that ultimate has the cooldown that it does (since I believe it's been quite some time since we've ever changed it), but my gut reaction is that it actually makes quite a bit of sense, especially at earlier ranks.

Because Eve has the advantage of being able to go pretty much anywhere on the map undetected at pretty much any time, having that really strong, reliable slow on a much shorter cooldown could be really crazy and make her chain ganking case pretty damn scary.

Do you guys generally think it should be on a shorter cooldown? Does it feel too long to succeed as Eve? What does reducing its cooldown enable that you couldn't already do and that you should be able to or need to do?

I think the CD is really long for how squishy she is. And yeah sure she can go around the map unseen, but once you step into that circle around her she isnt invisible anymore and that area is way to big for her.

I don't know about others, but I rarely use her ultimate for the slow. I use it for damage and to shield myself to stay alive, roughly equally. If I really need to kill someone fast without them killing me, I use the ultimate to hurt them and to protect myself from just being blown up if they fight back, or I use it on a group of enemies to get a strong enough shield to survive fighting near them.

The only time I use the ultimate for a slow is when someone is really set on running away from me and I can't manage to catch up to them with my W, and I usually don't like doing that because it feels like a waste of its power (I used by ultimate merely as a slow and so I am much less effective in combat / duels for a long time afterwards.)

(Note that this is AP assassin Eve.)

IMO her ult is weird. She's an assassin yet the ult promotes tankiness and has a slow and does diminishing damage.

I partly think she needs a new ult of some kind.

The cooldown is just a big part of the ultimate feeling so unsatisfying as a whole. While a character like Eve should never have a gamechanging ultimate, when you have what is already a mediocre ultimate on an early game cooldown reserved for the truly insane ults like Paranoia, it makes the character feel so unfairly treated.

I absolutely understand the necessity for Evelynn to have a long cooldown on her early game ultimates because her ganks are so difficult to prevent and her passive as a whole provides a LOT of early game power, but Agony's Embrace honestly is weak to the point that it's a relatively poor power spike for her ganks when it IS up. A very moderate nuke that falls off hard if the gank victims are at all far away from full health with a mediocre slow and a shield that in a ganking scenario is essentially useless is just... honestly not threatening. And when you add in how little she can use it, it's just so bizarre. Quite frankly her ganks pre-6 are more threatening than her post-6 ganks, but there's no barrier to her chain ganking at that point of the game, yet when people hit 6 (and generally get better at peeling off ganks), Evelynn has a random gate (the giant ult cooldown) that means she can only keep up with the power of the laners once every three minutes. That feels very off and doesn't really address her power curve in the right way IMO.

It's one of the big parts of her kit that makes me think she needs a rework. I've never heard of a single person who thought it was a powerful or fun ultimate to use.

Thryale1 votes

the problem is, eve pays for the power of her passive in other areas of her kit as well. So it just feels like too much to have her ult also sacrifice effectiveness on a kit that is already kinda gimped just to keep her passive in line.

Rew7111 votes

I actually see this in her kit. Her Q does really good damage, and would be find for when jungling. The thing that I find surprising is the fact her Q and E don't deal the AD damage from her current AD and only bonus. It only makes playing as her that much harder and it takes away her 100% AP possibility from her E. (If you say that AP can't go into physical damage, I dare you to look at Tryndamere and see that his E allows AP to go into physical just fine.) I'd really like her AD to allow 100% of the bonus AD I have to get to allow it to work. But, that's beside the point I wanted to make. Her early R's could at least get some compensation (just 90 seconds for each level up) to deal R damage.

Karn Bishop1 votes

No we don't need it, though if you could speed up Q a bit? it's never fun missing a kill because someone can outrun my targeted spell that i can't even directly aim.

Well the way I like to build Eve is going AP. Earlier in the game if the enemy jungle decides to come find me in my jungle and they pick someone like Shyvana or XinZhao. I basically have to blow my ulti just for the shield + slow to survive, now it's on a 2 and a half minute cool down where I have to play extremely safe and can't get off a really successful gank without putting myself in danger of dying or the enemy just straight up running away.

OKAY. So. I've been playing A TON of Eve this past week. She's probably my new favorite champ. Rumble's Rumble, but.. Idk. Anyway. I've been thinking about this a lot, and loving Eve as much as I do i think that the CD on her ult is reasonable to an extent. With attack/move speed in her kit and the ability to proc sheen/rylai's endlessly with her low Q cooldown I think that it makes sense to have her ult on a high cooldown. I'm not a great jungler so I lane with her top/mid mostly. But I can figure out that a skilled jungler with this ult on a low cooldown would be a monster. Like stupid monster. Like Eve perma banned monster. So personally, I think Eve is already competitively viable, there are just better options for junglers, who would be the ones using her in pro games. But if you guys over at Rito would like to see her played on the LCS level I would say a SLIGHTLY lower ultimate cooldown would be best. I'll leave it to you guys to decide how much lower that would be. I think the rest of her kit is fine where it is, so leave that shit alone :p

Thanks guys for the great champ =]

I've been playing Evelynn for years (Look at my profile and know that I am not lying) and the above quoted is the excuse for almost literally everysingle nerf Evelynn has ever received. It has no value as an explanation given that you could destroy her entire kit and give the same speech practically verbatim for that as well.

Do you guys generally think it should be on a shorter cooldown? Does it feel too long to succeed as Eve? What does reducing its cooldown enable that you couldn't already do and that you should be able to or need to do?

1- Yes. Look at Lee's kit and ultra short cooldowns it has in addition to Lee being manaless. And before you say "BUT EVELYNN IS INVISIBLE!" she is not invisible, she can only bypass green wards, not stalk people like Twitch and Shaco... Lee can also easily bypass green wards through his multiple low cooldown manaless dashes. Also look at the raw power that Lee's ultimate has, as an AoE stun, single target stun and single target snare with huge AD scaling along with shorter cooldown than Evelynn's ultimate. Where the balancing point here? either Evelynn needs buffs or Lee Sin needs nerfs.

2- No, I can succeed with Evelynn even with an ultra high cooldown on the ultimate, but only through great effort which is not as required with other champions.

3- The ability to assassinate or otherwise engage in a team fight without being massively crippled if another engage occurs swiftly after that one. Basically it is a matter of decision making where either decision is bad because of the long cooldown. Again, it has one of the longest cooldowns for the level of power it has.

The cooldown for Evelynn's ult has been nerfed before and it was just as , unjustified during those instances. I understand that the post I'm responding to is 5 months old but the point is just as valid.

Evelynn takes nerfs over and over with the argument always being "BUT SHES INVIS!!!", how about you take that same level of "SMASH FIRST, NEVER ASK QUESTIONS" to Lee , Zed, Yasuo , Thresh or Riven?

bad manner kid4 votes

Ideally, you drop the ult in a group and you aren't the target because you have a massive shield on yourself.

That leads to more Evelynn pew pew.

But really, since she's invisible you can basically gank anyone over extended that can't pound your face in. It's a huge tradeoff to being seen by a ward right?

Rew7111 votes

Since she's invisible? She's basically invisible to wards. Not in close combat. You can see her from 1000 range away. She can't even Q unless close up. And her R only lasts for possibly 6 seconds. And you can only get up to a 1500 shield if everyone is all huddled up. How would that even happen?

Anidan2 votes

I dunno, maybe it's the same people supposedly getting hit by 2-3 man Broken Wings and Ki Bursts that people say Riven can do once in a blue moon despite the very small radii of the abilities?

It's supposed to initiate teamfights and ganks, and she can just outright drop it on people while she remains stealthed.

Also, that shield is really fucking powerful.

Not really. For it to beat out the better shields she must hit 3 or more targets with it. which means she is supposed to initiate a teamfight even though she is supposed to pick.

Uiru1 votes

If you're close enough to get a 1500 shield you are close enough to be instantly evaporated regardless of build. (And if you're built tanky enough to let you get one more q off than an assassin build would, you deal so little damage that nobody cares about you anyway.)

The shield is a nonsensical power budget drain on a nonsensical ult (on a nonsensical character).

okay whats up with this myth that she can drop it in stealth. evelynn HAS TO REVEAL HERSELF to hit someone. none of her abilities outrange her stealth reveal range.

Really? It's a cool ultimate but I imagine if you asked people to name an ultimate in League of Legends you'd hear Death Lotus a thousand times before Noxian Guillotine. Probably Lee's ult too. Never really thought about Darius having an iconic ult really.

When League players hear the term "dunk", they think of Darius' ult. Darius' dunkmaster credentials eclipse even those of Mr. Yi, the original dunkmaster, in the average player's mind.

Well yeah but there are a bunch of different abilities that have memes attached to them. When you hear "spin to win" you think of Garen's E, for example. Doesn't mean they're the most iconic abilities in the game, it just means that the people who like those abilities have a fun name for it.

I would certainly say Garen's E is one of the most iconic abilities in the entire game.

Apparently people don't know what kappa means.

You'd have to look long and hard to find a REGULAR ability that would not be a net buff to Eve if it replaced her R.

Lux does way more damage and is on a much lower cooldown. But her's also comes with a convenient warning.

The ult cooldown is so high becuse shes seen as a toxic champ because of her stelth. Lets just ignore the fact that you can just stick a ward by her camps and know when shes on your side of the map, and at lvl 9 everyone can upgrade to the sight trinket.

She is only ever powerful because people dont understand how to play against her. Whenyour fighting himadinger you wouldnt stand in his turret range taking shots, so why would you push your lane hard when you dont know where eve is?

BlackEyesBlue1 votes

I've asked this in the past... people usually heap hate on the mere suggestion of buffing Eve...

Her ult is her only CC and the weakest tool in her kit as it stands, simply because the CD is ridiculous!

I like your suggestion BTW. :P

Maratsune1 votes

I was playing Eve in an ARAM game recently and had this exact thought. It's ridiculously long, and when it's kind of essential for team fights so Eve doesn't get killed really quickly, the long CD kind of holds her back. I'm not sure what part of her warrants such a bar on her ult CD.

Karn Bishop1 votes

Honestly? because she just doesn't need the lower CD's.

The only thing i ever complain about is the speed of Q, i don't like people outrunning a spell i cast that is targeted it just feels wrong and unfair.

Also as an eve main I'm not a fan of buffs that look really good on paper but are flat gameplay wise because then 90% of the lol community starts screaming for nerfs so they don't have to learn the match-up and i get stuck playing champions i don't enjoy until i learn to build around the nerfs to make her playable again.

Well luckily, it just so happens she has 2 other abilities that are able do just that! :D Not to mention a Sonic mode on her w. :DDD

But seriously replace her ultimate with something relevant to her popular play style. Current one is pretty much trash.

Sassmast3r1 votes

Well I mean, it is relatively powerful when it's used properly. The more champs it hits, the bigger the shield she gets is; it works really well when she's already somewhat fed and she is easily strong enough to kill two-three targets, she just needs that slight amount of sustain for it. I don't know how I feel about reducing the CD on it.

TwitchInMyPants1 votes

So her ult CD is 150/120/90

150 is a bit much for an ult like that but it dramatically drops as you get into the game, much more than other ults. Considering it temporarily makes her a tank and sets up fights on its own and she can roam around the map at her leisure as long as she doesn't get caught, it seems like a fair power curve. Though personally if she needed any buff at most I'd make it 120/105/90 instead just so its more in line with other ults early, though just her gank pressure alone pulls from the power budget there. Its a tough call balance wise, I don't blame Riot for not messing with her much.

Ñapoleoni1 votes

I think the real question is why Udyr's ult has such a low CD. GG

Would it really break Evelyn to give her some whips and chains soft CC? Or maybe a short duration root?

Honestly I wouldn't mind seeing Eve's Ult lose its damage completely and be given an onkill/assist reset like her old Ult. Maybe tack on some resist shred or something.
