Question about normal MMR

I know Riot doesn't realease any Information about this but I was wondering If I could get some insight.

So...

I've noticed that there are a couple people out there who have when they're matched with their teammates have different rankings such as let's say one Unranked, two Golds, one Plat and One Diamond. How exactly does this happen? The only reason I was prompted to ask this was because one of my friend is levelling a smurf and usually gets placed with people are high gold; low plat and occasionally some Diamond players here and there.

I don't really understand your question. You're asking about Normal MMR but your involves Ranked MMR. What does their ranked MMR have to do with their Normal MMR? They are two different systems.

I understand that they're two different system but wouldn't it be more logical to have people matched with people who are around their level of play? I've seen some people in Bronze matched with Challenger, kind of see where I'm going with this?

No...because they're two different systems. They have nothing to do with one another.

He still has a point though, diamonds or challenger players are going to beat the shit out of people in gold or silver so on the rare occasion they play normals the games are often lopsided 20 minute surrenders.

They are matched that way. The system just uses normal MMR instead of ranked MMR.

Yeah I do the main problems is there just are not many diamonds playing normals to find games with 10 diamond players (because honestly why would you play normals if you are diamond you are usually just beating the crap out of silvers/golds) so I think that is why we see so many lopsided or poorly matched normals games.

They likely just played well while leveling their smurf. That or they are getting placed on teams where the other team has a 2 ,3, 4, or 5 man premade.

I noticed in my normals i'd start with unranked people, now my normals are full of silvers, gold, and the occasional plat. (i'm still unranked -_-)

Preseason less people playing ranked probably or your mmr is going up because you are winning a lot

Normal matchmaking is pretty lenient.
