One Trick Ponies, what do you do when your champion gets nerfed/ receives a gameplay update?

Often times I overhear that one of the best ways to climb in ranked is to get really good at one or two champions, and just basically play them until your skill with that one or those two champs carries you in ranked.

But, what do you do if those champions get nerfed? Especially for One Trick Ponies who play literally only one champ. Or if your champ gets a gameplay update, where even if they're better or the same in terms of power they're different and you have to relearn at least some of their kit.

We become depressed and eventually tilt beyond what is humanly possible until we stop playing league for the sake of our mental health, cry for a few hours, experience a life changing event, get married, and then move on to Diablo 3.

If you've put in all your time and effort into one champion, then most updates/changes won't affect you too much. As long as you understand the core dynamics of your champion, you should be able to adapt even if your champion gets nerfed.

The thing about "maining" or going OTP on a champion is, we do it because we love the champion. Regardless of whether they are strong, weak, meta or non-meta, OTPs play their main champs because they have a level of mastery invested into that champion that allows them to overcome certain obstacles that would set back a more 'general' player.

On the topic of what to OTP though, it would be wise to pick a champion that A) You actually enjoy playing and don't get bored of and B) Be a niche pick so you don't get banned out every game.

P.S: If someone quits their main because they got nerfed, they were never really a main and were just abusing 'freelo'.

RiP my sweet little Pyromancer. First they obliterated Lulu for daring to venture out of botlane, and now Annie is getting gutted like all the other AP mages. This AP item changes and her Mid year update will most likely put her as one of the worst champs in the game. Lane Lulu is now extremely hard to pull off and mid Annie will be just awful now that she losing 3/4's of her power (Half of it going to Tibbers, 1/4 being removed with ap item nerfs.)

Be sad and move on to a new main until Riot buffs them again

  1. A backup main that you need to go quick practice in normals.
  2. (In nerf scenario) Mechanically outplay, because this is the champion you play 24/7

bite the bullet

Keep playing as said champ since no one is picking or banning them after said nerf.

Now when your main's main item gets nerfed then you start crying.

Give us back season 2 or 4 Trinity Rito

No matter how much they nerf Lulu, I'll still be playing her and adapting as best as I could. I don't play her because she's OP or even strong. I play her because I genuinely enjoy her character, kit and playstyle. It's actually not too bad, since now she isn't a contested pick/ban.

Now if they reworked her and took away her identity, then I may reconsider.. but it'd have to be some drastic changes.

Adapt.

I feel like ever since season 6 the amount of one trick pony had reduced by a lot.

it's sad to be a onetrickpony when people can rekt you by picking up the FotM for the first time and destroy u because the champion is broken. You either have to be able to play a variety of champion to counter the FotM, or u become one of those fuckers.

Well, we as onetricks either will stick with our champion regardless, or just learn a new trick in place of the old one. Exactly why I dropped Udyr for Morde.

just look what trick2g did, he still plays udyr pheonix and now hes even more commited to the ap build and the splitpush

Keep playing Kog forever and ever.

Previously, if I've started losing too much, or stopped having fun due to the changes, I've swapped ponies.

I'm a Shaco OTP, so I'll probably never have to worry about that. Shaco doesn't exist for Riot, just like how Aatrox and Fiddlesticks don't exist.

Hi. I used to play Akali, Katarina (pre-rework too), and some Janna.

You usually adapt to the nerfs. If your main is one who is susceptible to nerfs, you can only hope that it doesn't become unplayable. If the nerf is too large, you take a break and then come back, so that the nerf doesn't throw you off. (I had to put off Ori for some time after her AD nerf, because I was too used to her old values).

Pre-rework Katarina was my best champion. After her rework, she was the same, but not the same. I got used to rework Kat. They kept nerfing her. I had to take a break because I was so used to her pre-nerf. I've since lost interest, but I'll probably pick her back up at some point.

I don't consider AP Akali worth playing anymore. If I ever play her, it's tank now. Aside from having to change how I play Akali completely, I just learned new champions. I completely deferred to the support role, and am still trying to learn new champions. I'm waiting for her rework at this point.

Janna - They nerfed her a lot, but not her core strengths, so she's still the same. I'm praying they don't destroy her like Akali.

Don't ever become a one-trick pony. When they nerf/rework your champ, you become tilted, HARD. After Akali S5 nerfs, I just spiraled down.

Numbers don't usually mean anything (damage wise), but when Riot makes your champion clunky Akali, reduces their core strength Akali, or removes some part of them completely Akali, you have to draw the line at some point.

Rest in peace my old Jax Tryndamere Olaf Poppy Fiora.

My solution : Blame Riot and stop spending money in this game.
