Daily reminder to Riot Stashu that you still haven't kept your word.

TheUltimateSpear··112 votes·5,449 views

Stashu: Glad the changes sit well with you. Sorry about communicating, I've been working on that :/. We're not done with Cassiopeia just yet, so as we move forward I'll be sure to be more open there.

Anyway, thanks for taking your time to post this. I understand there are still some pretty big problems left to solve, but I want everyone to know that we've still got Cassiopeia front-and-center and will continue trying to improve her.

Stashu:** Going forward with Cassiopeia, the core goalset includes focusing the kit more on her poisons,** but it does not necessarily include making her a long-range-focused or early-game-focused mage.

We've got her to a much more playable state (perhaps even a bit too strong), but there's still more to be done feeling-wise.

This might mean shifting power from her short range ability into her longer range ones, or just making her shorter range ability different and more of a core poison itself, as all of these are viable options in making a poison mage.

I'll definitely be sure to bring the discussion here when we start to get a bit more traction on the paths we're thinking of taking.

Player: I played old Cass like a lane bully because I found it fun. If I wanted to play a late game hyper scaler AP champ, I'd play Veigar or Ryze.

Stashu: Yeah, and that makes sense to me, but that's a different argument entirely from "she no longer feels like a poison mage," which is what I was addressing here.

These were all taken, word for word, from your last 3 posts before you disappeared from the Boards Riot Stashu. And the last of these posts where... what was it? 7 months ago? Well. Isn't that funny.

I'm not sure if you know this, but if you say you're going to continuing working on Cassiopeia you should probably keep your word. You know how you said you'd do that? Along with making her more focused on her poisons? Yet you haven't. All you've done is tinker with her numbers.

Look, I get it. Getting work done takes time. I get it's hard to please everyone. But you gave your word, and then didn't follow through. You shouldn't have said anything if you knew that was going to be the case. And if you didn't know that was going to be the case, the least you could do is post on the boards and say you're done working on Cassiopeia, at least when it comes to changing her kit rather than her numbers. Yet you haven't done that either, and you probably won't.

I'm going to make this post on the boards until I get a red response. If you don't want to continue work on Cassiopeia, fine, but the least you could do is say you won't, so anyone who cares can stop having their hopes up.

EDIT: Fixed a few grammar errors here and there

Casseopia should 100% be a poison mage. Someone who kites teamfights and can spit out poisions that you should be scared of and have to pay attention to where you're walking. Not a glorified e mashing champion.

it won't improve because it's too late for them to please most people. They have to make change for the sake of change now

Honestly. All players should be making threads and pushing for more. Riot let us cassiopeia players down so hard. For all those players who were against the olaf/zilean/veigar/etc.. reworks, we must rise up and make riot actually listen and communicate to us. Not just brush it aside and leave it supposedly "successful".

Say what you want, but current Karma is a really well balanced and enjoyable champion that has her place in the game.

It's sad that Old Karma got deleted, and I miss playing her -- while I don't think the old Karma was completely unbalanceable, I do think Riot's extreme measures with her were somewhat justified, if only a little. She was a 30-35% winrate champion with no real room for buffs due to the nature of her kit (and her actual/potential power level). It would be like buffing pre-rework Sion.

Guinsoo was testing a buffed/streamlined version of Old Karma internally, but they felt it couldn't work. At least they tried.

As someone who played old Karma an enormous amount, her kit was a bit silly (albeit fun). She was forced to have low numbers / bad range / ludicrous mana costs etc... Riot just didn't want a champ like that. They were just completely stumped on how to make her a balanced champ. Kind of like Poppy.

Eh, old Karma is someone I really think could easily exist in League in 2015. Her passive isn't unusual given the number of "I get much harder to kill the weaker I am" bruiser effects we now have in the game, the burden of knowledge with her old W is no longer something Riot can complain about given they have released both Kalista and Tahm Kench and even the "having 6 levels in her basic abilities was confusing" thing is something they went back on with their recent Jayce changes.

A lot of the stuff they listed as problems for Karma in the past are things they've introduced to the game on different champions since. I really feel like old Karma would be allowed to be powerful in 2015. She was just before her time.

Dunal2 votes

No. She really just couldn't be buffed. Didn't matter what gimmicks she had in her kit.

Karma became more durable AND had more burst the lower her HP was. It pretty much meant that poking her down was not only meaningless but actually discouraged.

Then her R+E patterns was just Old Sion but even sillier. It was the defining aspect of her kit that made her rather unbalanceable, in conjunction with her passive. What held her back with this was very high mana costs and cooldown on her mantra (to make it usable). Had Karma been buffed to levels beyond even just a reasonable winrate this ability alone would make her hell to play against. In fact, the only reason she was 'challenging' to play as was because she was undertuned, but still had annoying play patterns for her opponents. Imagine how that would have escalated with buffs? She had no real skillshots to speak of so her interactivity in lane would be very binary. Difficult to damage and had guaranteed burst against you.

W was an ability with a lot of potential and the whole "ally awareness" thing isn't at all a factor in my point. It was just kinda bad. At least without mantra. 10% speed/slow until level 13?

On that note, all of Karma's abilities were just mediocre without mantra. Q was a worse Morde E. E was a worse Janna E, W was... just plain weak.

She had a lot of problems but also encouraged play patterns that prevented her from being buffed into overall viability. You know what the following champions have/had in common?

Morde. Diana. Old Sion.

Abilities that scale with durability and burst at the same time (with AP). If they're fed they become both harder to kill and deal more burst. All of which have been a terror to balance and are rather unfun to play against. Diana to a lesser extent I suppose.

Had old Karma been given better mana costs, higher AA range (it was only 425) or higher numbers on abilities, or lower cooldowns her laning would just be unmoveable and possible have some of the least interesting or possible counterplay. She packed strong waveclear too.

Her AoE heal isn't even a factor in all this since she would use RE 98% of the time. In order to 'buff' her would require a nerf to that ability in order to buff anything else. That was their best option but perhaps it just didn't work out. New Karma actually had a nerfed version of it to begin with so that was their compromise somewhat.

But like I said, her W was a unique ability that should have stayed but made much stronger. If hitting the enemy with the bond was like Wisp/Lo's then I'm sure allies would have learned to utilise it more. A minor slow meant nobody bothered to care for it.

I suppose another option for Old Karma would have been to lower her burst damage drastically and buff her utility a lot. Then she may have been healthy as a dedicated support. But there would have been so much backlash with that too.

ShadowParker2 votes

I'm not denying that Karma is really balanced, and that she is really fun. I actually enjoy playing her myself. The thing is, her and old karma are almost two different champions.

The rework was entirely uncalled for, they could've tweaked some abilities if needed, instead of taking away her core theme.

Plus she doesn't even incorporate fans anymore. -_-

Keevalroy4 votes

I'm not a fan of Cass, but I remember what they did to Ahri a few months ago when DFG was removed. I may not play Cass, but I feel for you guys - having changes that no one wanted go through anyway regardless of how much the community rallied to defend their favorite champions from random, unjustifiable, unnecessary changes that are pulled out of Riot's asses on a whim.

5G8Nri0B541 votes

Ahri was a very unusual case...

To many old school Ahri players, it's not a rework, but a reversion of a much hated rework. It depends on how long since you've played the game. DFG-Ahri was the first rework.

Keevalroy1 votes

A reversion to a stronger state of what got her nerfed the first time. Nowhere in their twisted backwards logic does it make any sense at all.

Ariel the Cruel2 votes

The problem with Ahri originally was DFG. Ahri wasn't meant to be an assassin, but DFG let her gib people at the speed of LeBroke. She was ment to be a kite mage. The combination of innate safety + a OP item warped her play style into a broken state. Since Riot didn't want to touch DFG, they had to modify her kit. That's when they shunted half her power budget into landing charm.

As for the reversion: nobody is entirely sure where the move speed buff on Q came from. (>_>)

RainbowIcee2 votes

Ahri is in a perfectly good condition right now. She is a very Safe champion to play with massive damage. She has her 3 Dash ult and her Q gives her a huge movement speed boost. She's low risk.

Big Bang Bob3 votes

What was the original Cassiopeia like? What made her a "poison mage"? It seems from the spotlight that she was still focused around twin fang as it even suggests maxing it first and that it was her main damage.

Zair Umbras5 votes

Well, to start, her Q did 80% of her AP over its duration and her W did 15% per sec. Her Q is now a 45% and her W now does 10% per sec. Her E did a lot, with it used to be sitting at a 55% ratio with a 190 base compared to a 150ish base it's at now, but the biggest change was the fact they changed her passive from being a complete ability spam into only spamming E. They also nerfed her W's base from 25-65 per sec to 10-30 per sec.

They pretty much reduced her power everywhere, even her R, and shoved her into an E spamming lane bully and rewarded her for spamming it with the heal they added into it and of course then shoving huge AP boosts into her passive. Then to make her feel more 'poisony', they made her E also increase poison's damage, which didn't matter much since they'd still be sitting at nerfed damage.

Would've been nice if they just changed her E to do reduced damage, but increase her poison's damage to begin with, but instead they've just kept loading all of her power into her E rather than her poisons because they felt her having that much AoE poison damage was too strong and seen as a 'Hidden Power' because it did DoT rather than burst. She was meant to be DoT... You used to bully people with the Q, let its scaling and base destroy them, not have to go into short range to spam E.

Sire Hippington2 votes

there is pretty often a difference from what rito has for an idea with a champ, and what he ends up beeing used as in game, as well as the communitys perception of said champ. If that champ then doesn't get touched for years, you can't just go and shape him to fit more into the inital plan, you have to figure out what the current identity for both gameplay and theme is, and you have to do so by working together with the community. This is one of the biggest problems with riot's reworks so far. One of the reworks that were appriciated by the majority of the community was the xerath rework, which is a great example on how to do it. There was a huge discussion together with the community in order to pin down his thematic aswell as his gameplay fantasy. Riot stated their initially though role of Xerath, and then checked how it differs from the perception of the community and tried to find a middleground. The only small flaw on the rework is that really alot people complained about his ult feeling weak(note not beeing, but feeling weak), as the visuals and also the sound there a bit underwhelming compared to the raw power it should be and also compared to how mighty his old ult felt. Yet, despite all those complaints back then, his ult still looks like he's throwing puny bubbles rather than raw arcane energie, and the sound still lacks some punch...

Riot's plan for cassio probably always was twinfang focused hypercarry, but is soon turned out that going for the twinfangs was really risky thing with that squishy snake, so most players optd to focus on Q+W, which allowed for strong zone controll and good midranged aoe dps aswell as harres. It felt also more fitting to a snake, beeing focused on poison and doting your enemies to the ground. Twinfang became more a oportunistical tool that allowed for massive singetarget dps if the situation was right, and not the center of her kit.

I personaly don't care if she's a E focused hypercarry or a poisonfocused bully and controll mage, but i understand why alot people see her as a poisonmage, i followed the discussions with stashu's promises, and seeing that the majority off cassio mains wants her as a 'cunning poison mage', i support them in their call and can understand them perfectly well.

I still have a grudge cause of old Karma. I loved her pre rework, and while new karma isn't bad either, she simply is a totally different champion. I also was against the scarner rework, together with many others, as it destroyed him for me, but we were ignored, so i know how the cassio players feel.

Also, another huge critique point was how bad cassios passive feels, it doesn't feel like a growth of power, it feels like shackels you need to remove. The main problem is that it does not really argument her kit, it's just an aritfical scaleing that shapes her powercurve into a hyercarry. It feels forced upon her for the sake of hyperscaleing, rather than beeing a natural part of her kit. That's mostly due to it simply giving a stat infusion besides the heal on E.

If we look on other 'unlock power' effeckts, they all feel grate as they directly argument their kit. Victors passive, Rengars trophys, Kah's evolutions, Syndras passive, all interact with their bas kit rather than giving a mere stat infusion... And stashu agreed on this problem and said he'd work on it...and nothing happend. And unlike the poison vs twinfang part, i'm kinda personally involved on fighting for a better passive...

Yeah E cass was kinda riots vision from the beginning but cass players found that Q max was better as it did similar damage for a much lower cost, that and it was a dot so you could walk up and Q them and then walk away while the dot did the work, this felt much more thematic as cass was the poison mage, but wasn't very healthy gameplay.

That's a big chunk of my understanding of it.

TheUltimateSpear6 votes

Her kit's almost entirely the same as before, just that the rework shoved all her power into her E and gave her a snowballing passive. The way the abilities function is nigh identical aside from getting innate healing and mana sustain on E, and her old mana sustain was on her passive which stacked up to five times to give her 50% reduction on her mana costs.

But yes, even before you could get the most damage from twin fang much. But this difference was much less pronounced. All of Cassiopeia's spell were important for her to succeed. They all did damage. Hold on, let me post the original numbers if you don't mind. :P

Old Cassiopeia:------------------------------------------------------New Cassiopeia:

Noxious Blast: 75/115/155/195/235 + 80% AP Noxious Blast: 75/115/155/195/235 + 45% AP

Miasma: 25/35/45/55/65 + 15% AP Miasma : 10/15/20/25/30 + 10% AP

Twin Fang: 50/85/120/155/190 + 55% AP Twin Fang: 55/80/105/130/155 + 55% AP

Petrifying Gaze: 200/325/450 + 60% AP Petrifying Gaze: 150/250/350 + 50% AP

Okay, despite how I don't like to argue numbers, they really do factor in losing what made Cassiopeia a unique champion in Leauge. Before the rework, you could max her Q over E depending on the match up. (Maxing Q would be better against a Ziggs than E, since you'd never get close to him anyways. for example) But now that the Q ratio has been almost halfed that's not an option anymore; you have to max E because it's the only spell that makes sense to max. And Cassi's W got trashed. A liandry's tick on the W does more damage than the W itself now.

Because of this, Cassiopeia's waveclear is much weaker now, until she can mana sustain spamming e's on minions at least. She has to use her E's, which don't do much more damage than autos on the minions to clear. Before, a simple W-Q or Q-W could clean up the back line nicely. And now those spells do nothing on their own. The thing is, Cassiopeia's poisons losing their damage doesn't just weaken her waveclear; it ruins her teamfight phase too. Now, Cassiopeia's poisons are just zoning tools; even if someone does get hit by them it doesn't really matter, especially W. Cassiopeia can no longer offer her team any meaningful poke until the teamfight's initiated. Not to mention her Ult. Sure, the damage it does is okay, but it still got nerfed to make way for Cassiopeia to become an E spam bot.

And that's just it. It's just not worth trashing 75% of a champ's kit for one ability in it. Cassiopeia lost her waveclear, poke, zoning tools so her E could be supercharged. And for what reason, you know? You could play old Cassi like people play new Cassi, but you could also hang back and poke and zone. And now that poking pattern's been axed for no good reason, and nothing's been gained. :/

Okay, that was super wordy. But that's the best I could come up with. Hope it clears up any confusion. :P

From the numbers you just posted... It seems like it would make even more sense to max Q than before. You get less base damage per point in E than before the rework and you get the same damage per point in Q. So maxing Q now instead of E is worth more than before. Decreasing the ratio doesn't change the amount of extra damage you get from maxing that skill.

iamleburk2 votes

The AP ratio matters more on cassio imo because of her new passive. Also keep in mind that she can get up to 4 E's in a row, so that base damage is a little misleading. I disagree that it makes more sense to max Q now, the AP ratio was nerfed pretty hard. It wouldnt apply the same pressure it did prenerf pre rework

Krys Star2 votes

Kalista

Basic Attacks deal less damage. Base Attack Damage and growth up. Q can no longer be cast while dashing.

Full disclosure: we're trying something new here. Kalista's basic attacks are already different from other champions in unique ways; they can miss, they can't be cancelled, and they grant her mobility for as long as she has a target. Embracing her distinct conditions around basic attacking but limiting their effectiveness allows us to preserve her play around stacking spears and Rending for primary dps (unlike standard crit-based carries) rather than making it flatly worse. This is something we'll be monitoring closely and are comfortable pulling back on if we need to, but for now we're trying an option that reinforces her focus on attack speed over more traditional builds.

Imagine if Riot had the same stance about Cassiopeia... Instead they shut the door in our faces and told us to get over it and enjoy the finalized changes. Riot's so full of fucking crap.

Keevalroy2 votes

One thing you're not considering is that they're still purposefully missing Kalista's biggest issue - those cancer hops need to go. It's amazing that they still believe that altering her basic attacks will resolve how toxic her design is...

Retillin2 votes

But they don't want to change her toxic design. It's the same when people were complaining about Kass (when he was at 90% ban, 10% pick rate in ranked). They said they didn't want to hit Kass' ult flash because it was "core to the character". They wanted to keep him as an elite assassin. But they just couldn't do it. Now he's a so/so assassin, because they had to nerf his ENTIRE kit because of one ability that was/is OP.... So when it comes to Kalista, they will do EVERYTHING they can to avoid removing/majorly nerfing her hop. Because they didn't learn their lesson from Kass with having a champion doing a lot of dmg with super high mobility...

Keevalroy2 votes

See, but her core theme was supposed to be the ~~non-consensual enslavement ~~ binding of another allied champion who will fight with her. THAT was the part that was core to her character. The only reason they want to keep the repulsive kangaroo hops is because she makes the spectator scene exciting. That's all. It's because she's flashy and entertaining to watch is the reason they'll always have that ridiculous passive.

If I remember correctly, the new Victorious skin was hinted that it would be an ADC. If this is true and it's Sivir, I'll be alright with it, but if this cancerous abomination is in line to get it, I am willing to throw games just to get demoted to silver. I don't want that thing anywhere near my roster; if at all possible, I want Riot to bar me from ever having her so long as the kit is still functioning the way it currently is.

Any Rioter reading this, I don't care who you are or what you say, Kalista isn't a champion. She's a tumor and a mistake to bring to life, and doesn't deserve to have the Victorious skin.

Wait, I'm gone all this time and she STILL isn't fixed yet?!

Crys3s2 votes

I can understand the frustration with not getting an answer 7 months later. Riot has really been working hard on new content and revamping other champions. I am sure there are other priorities more pressing than a champ that was being played in the LCS Spring Split.

One thing I do know for sure. Creating discussions like these doesn't provide constructive feedback in anyway. 5 months ago Meddler responded to these kinds of posts, here are the two threads of convo concerning this kind of intention:

  • 5 months ago Byrnes (NA) - 5 months ago

"Lastly, Rioters mention all the time "priorities" in getting things done and fixed. I think that wording needs to change, desperately. It definitely sends the wrong message when someone pours their heart out about something, it gets a lot of comments and upvotes, and then someone says "yeah, this is super important! But it isn't currently on our radar." That hurts, deeply, I suspect (I've never made a post with said response, but I've certainly agreed with ones). This becomes especially true when it is something a player paid for. Whether it be missing particles, wrong skill effects, or something as simple as "Sona's songs are a tad too quiet" - we just gave you God knows how much of our paycheck to be told these things will be handled when the team can get to them. We love you guys, we just want to be loved too."

Meddler:

"I wanted to respond to this bit because this can be really tough sometimes. For stuff that's outright bugged, absolutely, we should be getting on that quickly if it's a significant bug and, ideally, letting you guys know about it. For longer term work though it's a bit tougher situation. We can't work on every rework at once for example, and that leaves us with only two real options when it comes to reworks that won't be out for a while. We can either say nothing, or we can tell you it's work we agree needs to be done, but that we're doing other stuff first. My personal inclination is that saying something's better than silence, even if we're not able to say much, I'd love to hear people's thoughts on what they'd prefer though of course."

And from Zwill (23 days ago) this is the best explanation I read from him regarding the issue of why you don't see rioters posting in alot of our forum discussions:

"But if Rioters posted in GD more it wouldn't be that way!" I don't disagree with this. The current state of GD is one that many Rioters don't feel safe or welcomed in. We can, and do, encourage Rioters to engage in the Boards all the time, but it's counter to our culture to force anyone to engage somewhere, especially where they're already reluctant to do so. I'm not saying this is the right response, but it's human nature to want to avoid uncomfortable situations. Thus the cycle becomes self fulfilling; Players are angry at Rioters for Rioters not talking to them in their safe space, Rioters experience manifestation of that anger thus causing them to shy away. Not everyone is built like me, able to jump into the proverbial frying pan (and then straight into the fryer ;))."

I wish they could sticky posts like these for those posting in forums to have context of what kind of interactions are to be expected.
