in a roster of 140 champs it baffles me that riot avoids giving them a reason to be played

without just making them outright overpowered. all new releases are like this. The last champion who came out that had a strong and high value niche was and is vocally despised even by players who play in elos where she is a complete troll pick. Aatrox, Neeko, , Nunu, Irelia after they removed her utility for more damage, Kai'Sa... These champions aren't bringing anything to the table. They're nothing additions that just exist to exist and only show relevance at all by simply being generally overtuned and better than their alternatives. Their strengths and weaknesses are almost universally applicable and they never have a specialty case where you might say itd be a good time to play them. Every recent champion is specifically made so that they can be one tricked and spammed. Even champions who do have a meaningful niche (Yasuo, Akali) have such a high mechanical floor that you CAN'T use them as a pocket pick, which massively hinders the strategic value they could bring.

Riot also seems to have it in their head that simple means you should have as little tools as possible and be told to work with that. Garen has nothing. Annie is completely outpaced because other mages do what she does better now. Again, strategic value goes out the door; your champion is either good or it isn't. All classes suffer from this and it's why the meta has to be artificially cycled by Riot for it to not stagnate completely.

"but muh counter picks" is the only possible reasoning I can come up with; having to worry that you might have a bad matchup or get punished for a shitty draft is apparently unthinkable. Apparently we would rather have the same play style repackaged into us over and over and over because that's less "frustrating;" how dare a champion ever force us to play differently?

I don't expect anything will come out of the next champion, and my expectations for Mordekaiser correcting this sad trend are equally low. I wouldn't even remember 80% of releases past 2014 if it weren't for Riot shoving them in my face. I'm getting bored with this trend.

I'd like it if they stopped adding champions and actually focused on rebalancing/reworking the ones they have.

I'll point out that 4 of the last 5 champions released have "theft" abilities.

Unless you are willing to ignore lower mmr's and just outright make every champion great at what they do you aren't going to see anywhere near a high amount of representation. Every game that you can establish a meta in has this same problem and it's never going to go away. It would be easy if riot would just stop trying to please lower skilled players and let loose on making every champion actually feel like a force to be reckoned with but they don't because people find things annoying or this is overpowered despite losing way more than they win which still baffles me. Remove the handcuffs from the balance team and we may have a shot at league actually feeling great no matter who you are playing because for however much bullshit the thing killing you has you would have just as much in a completely different way.

I'm tired of seeing riot kill off builds because people don't like it. I'd get it if it was stomping pro play because if it's too busted regardless of skill level then sure do something but now riot nukes things from orbit and leaves them there. Then you have to try to fight these champions where they are average or slightly above average but your legs are broken so you can barely make an attempt. I see this happen in every lane. Riot doesn't stop cutting you down outliers until they are gone and people then shout took you long enough to balance this thing we hate. I'm like balance? Psuedo erasing an option isn't balance why do people think it is?

I see your section about how some releases have universally applicable strength and while that may be true the problem imo is that their counters could all exist but they are too weak to fight anymore. By pruning away every natural predator we have champions running wild until riot breaks some of their legs. Oh a great example is Vayne. Vayne used to just fall over dead at the sight of any competent assassin. Now almost all of them have been so crippled that Vayne may as well chase them down.

it doesn't matter if theyre great at what they do, most champions don't have a specific thing (or combination of things) to be great at that someone else isn't doing too.

they need these things added or reworked into their kits because ATM there's maybe... thirty or forty champions that are better versions of the rest of the roster. Maybe less.
