This new champion better be playable in other roles other than support.

I mean, "The Bloodharbor Ripper" This doesn't seem to me like a support description at all,i really hope you give him some good scalings, his theme looks so dark and serious,it kinda reminds me of jhin, but darker?

Thresh doesn't visually look like a support and his lore isn't anything you'd expect on a typical support either, yet, here we are.

Thresh wasn't designed to be a support initially IIRC. He was meant to be a fighter.

Let's not bring out the champ with the worst case of lore-gameplay dissonance.

There is literally no way Thresh is a support because everything in his character lore and personality points to the fact he's an evil self-centered dbag, but somehow they made him into a primary support (not even "detached and apathetic" like Bard's kit that makes total sense to his character, but no, Thresh has arguably one of the most "buddying" kit in the entire game like wtf); probably because the designer don't have a brain big enough to actually make a proper champ and so after they ripped off Blitzcrank to make Thresh they instead just pretended that nobody sees that.

From a Gameplay perspective a support is somebody who usually peels for the adc or helps lock down key people in a fight. Which are two things that in my opinions thresh does pretty well. And btw I have a feeling that most of the people out there don’t really care about if a champion’s gameplay fits his/her role or lore. So RIOT doesn’t really care if the lore matches the gameplay or role of a champ.

Actually Riot do care about whether or not something a champ would do makes sense to their character.

Just some champs are completely ignored in that regard for no apparent reason.

Yeah I was just talking about how sometimes riot doesn’t seem to care about some champions’ lore to gameplay interactions, one big example is that Garen literally summons a giant magic sword when he is somebody that hates anything about magic.

Originally, in the old lore, when Demacia didn't really hate magic, it was sort of implied that Garen's gears were enchanted and he's just using them like tools, and that enchantment is kind of different to straight magic given how other characters who are implied to be using such method of gearing (Kat, Garen, Riven) are all resourceless champs who have some sort of supernatural ability seemingly granted by their gears.

But it would seem Riot has now refitting it to be more magical.

But still, Swain now covers that with his new line "Ignorant of the very own magic you carry into battle. How Demacian." This would imply that royal guards and those in high positions in Demacia are equipped with magic in some way but are presumably handwaved with otherwise or something; and so Garen is perhaps using it without realising it may be of magical nature. This contradictory nature of Demacia is also present in their trump card guardian, Galio, is a golem that operates on magic.

Ok I won't argue with you on any thing lore wise, I didn’t really read the old lore that much. I was just naming something that seemed ironic when only looking at garen’s ult and the whole demacia hates magic logic of demacia

They do care about it.

They just put more emphasis on a good champion than on one who matches lore to gameplay.

Yeah tell me how that a direct ripoff and slightly alternate but more overloaded version of Blitzcrank is also a good champion gameplay design.

As far as I'm concerned, Thresh is imo an utter failure when it comes to design. The kit is a blatant ripoff of another exist champing in the game in almost every way possible (and this isn't the first time CertainlyT has done this, they also did that with Darius who required a rework to actually differentiate the champ somewhat from Garen because they were almost one and the same champ) and their in-lore character makes 0 sense to their gameplay. This champ shouldn't have been made at all; he's also the reason why Blitz can't get his VGU, because Thresh is in the god damn way.

Thresh chains up targets and lashes them to death for funsies. His kit has all the CC He is tanky All of this fits for Support play styles.

As for Pyke all we know from context clues is that he has an execute, somehow has a heal, someone leads targets to their own deaths He is going to be a support that is more or less MEANT to KS.

these new styles are meant to make Support more enticing. That is part of why Thresh became so popular. Before him not many supports were known for making plays and were either squishy mages like Janna or walking meat shields like Alistar. Thresh gave a new fresh take on Support, and Pyke here is following that idea.

You miss the point. The point I was making is that a self-centered sadistic neutral evil ghost that only exist to kill people and collect their souls to torture for fun, makes no sense to be a support teamplayer character in gameplay.

Tahm Kench and his lore don’t seem very supportive since he’s in it for himself. But here we are, Kench support.

TK's whole thing is he forms a faustian pact with people. His entire premise is to give his prey what they want only to take it away, then feed on their despair.

If anyone, I'd say Thresh is the unlikely support, since the only thing his lore gives us is that he was a sadistic warden in life.

Is he listed as a supp? I didn’t see what his abilities are yet but to me based on the teaser he looks like either a fighter for the jungle/top or an assassin.

But this is me working with just the teaser I haven’t seen what his abilities are yet. Might edit it later today when I see his abilities.

Riot said new champion gonna be support

Kervvy1 votes

They haven't released his abilities yet, but they might release them next week when the new PBE patch comes out. They basically just said this in their last champion roadmap:

We felt it was time to execute on a new support with a darker, deeper thematic than most of our support cast. We also wanted to create an aggressive playmaker, someone who doesn’t just save a drowning ally, but who forces their enemies to drown themselves… by their own hands.

He'll probably be someone that is jungle/top viable as well as support. If he's designed to help the ADC then he'll fit well in jungle for ganks (of course his clear will also need to be good), and if he's a fighter then top will likely be his second home.

I'm looking forward to seeing what he's like xD

But no one has a problem with "the titan of the depths", "the undead juggernaut", "the river king", "Rise of the thorns", "the harbinger of doom" and "the chain warden"

All of which have darker origins or backstories yet played support.
