Just curious, why do I keep getting matched with people who are way above me in rank?

In a nutshell: I am a Gold player that has always gotten players (ever since I grinded my way out of Bronze I, 2 seasons ago) around a full rank higher than me matched against me in games (both normal and ranked). Right now, I keep getting matched against high gold to high platinum players (I am almost sure I get low diamonds every once in a while too). It gets really annoying to try to climb out of my division when I am facing people I should not be facing for an entire rank in the future. I have no idea why I get these people too; it seems pretty stupid. I usually win, yeah, but I would like my wins to be much easier. If I am going to grind out of a rank, I want to beat the people that are also that rank so that I can climb faster and easier to my "skill rank".

So. Is there a reason I keep getting matched with people much higher ranked than me? Is there a way to fix whatever has been going on for 2 years?

Thanks.

Example of a recent game (this is not even close to the worst mismatches I get, just an average one): http://i.imgur.com/pcoWreO.png

Also, as a side-note: Is this the right board to post this on?

I'll assume this is a ranked match, which means your MMR is one of a low-tier Plat, and the system is trying to match you properly.

Rejoice though, it's highly probably you will skip a division when you finish a promo if you keep it up.

Sadly, because my internet went out in my last promo game (when we were WRECKING their shit too..), I lost my first set of promos. Literally the most rage inducing moment of my life; so I only got to Gold II when I redid the promos.

But seriously, even if my MMR is of a low tier plat, my ELO isn't. Is there a way to fix it so that my MMR is of my own division again (without losing ranked games). Maybe lose a bunch of normal games on purpose?

Why does Riot even have this system implemented? Should ELOs just face off against other people around their ELO?

What you call Elo is now the rank/tier system, and what you call MMR is what used to be Elo. I'm not trying to be pedantic, I'm just gonna explain what's really going on...

The rank system now is essentially a cosmetic cover-up on the old Elo system. However, MMR (old Elo) is still the optimal mathematical way to rank a group of people's abilities (it's what chess uses). It still informs the match making system to see who gets put together in games and also determines how much LP you gain/lose. I'm pretty sure if your MMR (old Elo) is higher than average for your rank (what you call Elo) you'll get more LP for winning and lose less for losing. This means that eventually, your rank (what you call Elo) will stabilize (theoretically) around wherever your MMR is about right. This is why it's cosmetic; it's just the MMR (old Elo) system pulling the strings. I believe riot made this change to alleviate anxiety about ranked games. It was stressful to see your (old) Elo drop if you lost, so they stuck it behind the scenes behind a proxy rank (what you call Elo).

I was wondering a while back about how effective the Elo system was when applied individually in a team competition and how toxicity could affect it so I tried to make a MATLAB simulation to model it, but it didn't work. I emailed Riot to get some advice but never heard back :(

Most of the info I've posted here comes from my vague recollections of reading this once: http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Elo_rating_system Up to you to read it and make sure I'm not full of poops.

Oh shit. Thanks dude. That explains all of it.

Still kinda seems like crap (that you can get matched with some people much higher ranked than you). Either they don't deserve the rank they have (because they are playing at your much lower level) or they are good players that have just been on a slump (and could use you as their "comeback" game). :P

OR, to cast things in a more positive light, you're playing at the level of their rank, you just haven't attained it yet. You can tell if you're underrated by the disparity in your lp gains and losses. Riot intentionally rates you low after placement games for whatever reason, and there's some lag from when your MMR changes to your rank changing.
