Starting MMR for first time ranked players is too high.
I don't believe most people who just started playing League at Level 30 are already average level in terms of ranked ladder.

My friend got placed gold 4 first time during placements. He lost two. My other friend, he gold placed silver 1 and was gold 5 shortly after. out of about 42 friend i've gotten into the game, 12 are bronze, 22 silver, 8 are gold, (With 3 plat, 1 diamond rn) . The diamond one played HOTS. played mid and learned to rotate pretty fast.
From my experience with riot's placements, They're generally fine. Probably not fun getting placed with them on their first game though.
Your MMR for ranked is used for your first 10 games ever in ranked. (Its generally hetic as Normal MMR doesn't accurate reflect your skill a lot of the time)
Also the average League of Legends player is a bad player. So being up there isn't all too surprising, Bronze-Silver MMR (Most people who are stuck in there just haven't improved despite the amount of games they have vs someone who learns fast )
Personally I've always thought base MMR/ELO should start at 0 or Bronze 5 mainly because a large portion of players in mid tier (S2-G4) are only there because of the baseline 1200 MMR/ELO. With the current system being like so it's very unsatisfying while climbing. It is pretty much going from bronze to slightly better than bronze back into bronze but you're somehow higher rank.
That wouldn't work because of the way the system is designed, unless you think half the population should be bronze 5 0 lp. Think about it this way. For one person to climb, the enemy team has to lose. So, wherever you set the starting point for mmr is by definition the mid point. Half the people will lose and drop below that, half will win and go above it. Riot has intentionally set that to mid silver because they have an idea of the rank distribution they want. Change it to bronze 5 and now you have like 70% of population in bronze lol.
70% of the population is bronze most of them are just labeled as Silver/Gold because of that 1200 freelo. When I say everyone starts at 0 I more mean new players must start at 0 when they play ranked for the first time. The 10 provisionals still exist just that you get placed into bronze 1 instead of gold 5. This in my belief will help mid tier players more. Mid tier players suffer because of players who're unable to play at the skill level enter in for free and get trapped there. They rarely will improve or want to improve. They stay trapped there because of waves of players who are climbing boost them back up. The players who don't belong will drag down players who do belong. Causing a push and pull of mid tier where they themselves will be stuck but also other players too. If this were to happen but at a lower point you'd get a better equalizing effect. This being players who truly are better will be able to move up. Those who are not will stay. Average players will be able to get into a position that truly defines their ability to play.
I think it has something to do with your norm MMR prior to starting ranked but I dunno for sure.
I had a q with a Taric; post match I politely told him that he was probably better suited for normals and such until he learned.
Turns out he's matched with a 28% winrate Bronze V, a Bronze IV, and several unrankeds. I don't think that is near mid Silver.
yep. It was quite annoying while climbing to have a placed silver 5 who gets trashed by another with 200 games in ranke
It's generally safe to assume a player is average when they're first trying to place them, and their mmr jumps pretty rapidly during their placement matches if they're above or below average.
most people aren't average skill level, but on average the skill level is average and there are more people who are around average than people who are hella good or hella bad
Exactly. A player can get lucky and get a smurf on their team their first couple of games and be put into mid-high silver. Then they suck and completely ruin those games by going 0-20-2. It's not their fault (ish). It just sucks for the players that get them on their team.
Yeah, this is what people have been saying all along.
Also resets each season into lower elos from the middle of the pack is kind of stupid.
i feel like when your doing ranked for the first time your matches they place you mostly with average players but they put you with above average players some games out of the 10 to see if your good enough to hang and put you where they feel, bcuz i was vs scrubs on my smurf account won all 10 and only got placed in silver 2 but the lucky people who get placed against golds+ and win get placed in gold+ so think of it that way, wish for higher ranking players if you want to get a higher rank if you just dont wanna end up in bronze focus on wooping the scrubs
Good god yes, people who can't get their old accounts out of silver just level a new one, get lucky on a few provisional games and boom, they are Gold -_-. Its tilting to play with high gold and plat people who can't even play the game properly, such as a Cassi who in a 42 minute game had 3.7k dmg dealt as mid, 79 farm, with zero disconnects. Morganas who don't know their black shield makes them immune to CC. This game is in a wretched state. Rage quits need to be much more severely punished in loss of LP. LP loss needs to be lessened for those that are performing well in a game. Like if you lose but receive an S? You should not lose a FULL amount of LP, as the int'ing and trolling 0-16 player on your team. Same as if you lose and perform exceptionally bad? You should lose MORE LP, so people don't get stuck in this limbo state, where they are actually a very bad player but got boosted to their current gold/plat elo and through enough other good players, keep a decent high 40s % win/loss and stay where they are at.
I feel like in game performance and score effecting LP loss and gain will help deter int'ing and trolling. It will give incentive to try and perform well, even in a game you think is a loss.
There needs to be a better way to filter out bad players who get boosted, and there needs to be an easier path for good players to climb. Just look at my Hecarim jung history, literally if I'm on Hec and we lose that game? You know... that was a DAMN BAD GAME LUL xD.
