Why You Never Surrender: One of the Greatest Comebacks Ever

Alright, I'm sick and tired of losing games because people surrender at 20. A game I played (as Shen) yesterday is a perfect example of why you never surrender.

Yesterday, our Jinx disconnected less than 3 minutes in, and our Gnar support began feeding really hard. Gnar had about 14 deaths and enemy Tristana had 16 kills at around 20 minutes. At this point, everyone is thinking, okay, gg, team down 20 kills, report jinx. At around this time, I began ulting Gnar at bot, and got some double kills on Tristana and Soraka. We keep playing and at 41 minutes, our nexus was wide open. That's when the one of the greatest turnarounds in a LoL game happened. I believe my score at this point was 4-7-8. Then Akali and I just decided to take over this game, and we got fed quickly. Me, fiddlesticks, and akali grouped at base while Gnar farmed side lanes to get caught up after feeding Trist 16 kills early and putting us behind. Akali and I got so fed we were able to 2v5 them. We stay at base for about 20 more minutes, gave up 2 barons in that timeframe (enemy had 4 barons that game), and denied several attempts at a backdoor. At 60 minutes, we kill 4 of them (with soraka getting away with her stupid heal), and take down mid tower 2, mid inhib tower, and inhib. 5 minutes later, they 5 man push us for the nexus again, but this time, we ace them, and end the game in 66 minutes.

Key stats of game: -Jinx dc at around 3 minutes -Gnar died 26 times (14 times in 20 minutes) -Me (Shen) score was 4-7-8 at 42 minutes, finished 14-8-24 (that's 10-1-16 in the final 24 minutes of game) -Akali 19/3/14 (carried with me) -Enemy tristana finished 27-15-6 (started 14-1 and 20-5 or something before I started going bot) -Gnar final stats 14/26/10 (started 0-14). also had 356 cs. -Open Nexus at 41 minutes, stopped enemy from killing it for 25 minutes, and then win -Final Kill Score was 52-47 (trailed by 20 kills early)

Moral of story: **NEVER ** surrender. NEVER. I have lost HUNDREDS of games because people surrender at 20 minutes because A) Team down 10-20 kills B) Enemy is way too fed C) Lost 1 or 2 towers D) AFK on team

or in my game, all of the above.

This post is not intended to brag about how I'm a great player (I'm not, B2 last season) and made the best comeback ever or whatever, its to get the point across to never surreneder because I'm sick of people surrendering at 20.

Good job persisting and willing yourself toa victory. However I do find it incredibly sad the enemy team could not close out the game. Thats to be expected though. Nice work!

Thanks man. It is kind of unbelievable that an ADC that has 16 kills in 20 minutes and has taken down both bot towers, but his team could not close out the game. Nexus was open for 25 minutes as well.

Especially considering it was a Tristana who has the longest AA range in the game at max level and a massive AS steroid all she needed was a slight amount of peel and it was a done deal.

More like, "This is why you ban akali, because noobs cannot deal with her"

lol, I helped akali get several kills with my taunts and ults to get her fed. She didn't start off too hot either. Enemy was all 30s I believe, and they started off well, so i would not call them "noobs".

You don't surrender when there is still chances left to win, a reasonable amount of chances.

If any chances that is lower than 5% or hell 0%, just surrender and stop wasting your time.

Trying is a good thing, yes, I raise 2 arms in completely agreement. However there is also a thing about acknowledging your own defeats.

You try your best to win but when it really isn't possible anymore then you have to agree that you lost, simple as that. So I would say,

Only surrender when necessary.

Enemy adc was fed 20 kills quickly, open nexus with us barely touching their Tier 2 towers, us trailing by 20 kills early, 4v5 for all but 2 1/2 minutes of the game, is that what you would define as "less than 5% chance" winning? Also there is no such thing as a 0% chance to win.

yes, there really is, at a certain point. unless they just walk into you and feed you kills instead of grouping and winning, there are most definitely games that are 0% chance to win. thats why you see challenger kids type "mid is open" and afk because its before 20 minutes. it definitely exists. most of you kids are just blindly optimistic that the enemy team will have a sudden case of the derps and literally hand you the win.

No, just no. There is no such thing as 0% chance to win. Every game is winnable.

Dude, seriously, stop trying hard to be positive.

If you don't like what I'm saying here, you are welcome to leave. You're not being constructive at all, and every game is winnable. End of story. If you wanna keep surrendering at 20 in your games, go ahead. I am not forcing anyone to change their opinion of what a winnable game is.

every game is not winnable. if you're counting on someone going afk, lagging out, etc, then sure. because something like that is completely necessary for every game to be winnable. if you're counting the possibility of something random like that happening, sorry to tell you, but probability says you're an idiot.

I've lost games where my team was up 10+ kills, got 2 barons, took 2/3 inhibs and both Nexus towers. Then either a key player like our support who is the engager or our mid waveclear gets caught alone when death timers are 40+ seconds, or in a teamfight we were positioned wrong and 3+ people get caught by an AOE ult, then we get aced/near aced and lose. If the other team ff'ed 20 it would've been an easy, easy win. Instead it was a huge throw.

Zombiephil1 votes

This is why I always tell my teammates to group, unfortunately, that's how most throws happen. I type group in all caps, and they ignore me, go roam and try to 1v1, only to find 3 or 4 other enemies there. When you group, no one gets caught alone. Too bad not many people understand that.

BluePolarizer1 votes

Grouping early will secure the game if done right. However, depending on team comp, that might not happen i.e. the enemy team has a Xerath, Ziggs or Anivia that's not the one feeding. If the game goes late enough, and you couldn't win for some reason (not grouping early enough, being unable to dive against waveclear mids, etc) then it will come down to team comp, positioning and luck, since even a 4 slotted 0-10 malphite that lands an ult on 3+ people, with a 5 slotted AOE mid and 5 slotted ADC, will still wreck an everyone at full build team.

I believe to secure a win, sometimes you have to splitpush, depending on comp. Otherwise, in a 5v5 teamfight, one lucky Malphite or Amumu ult can change the game even if they're really far behind.

Zombiephil1 votes

True, but most of the throws happen when a fed player (usually someone like Master Yi or Yasuo) refuses to group with the team because he thinks he can kill everyone, only to die and find himself on a 45-60 second respawn timer. Split pushing works sometimes. Splitting vs Grouping really depends on the scenario in the game.

BluePolarizer2 votes

I have to say, I've been that Master Yi. Splitpushing, get collapsed on by 3 ppl, can't escape, die near baron. They do baron, we lose an inhib, theirs respawns, and it all goes downhill from there. I've seen it happen to everyone: warding supports, yolo 420 noscope Vaynes and yes, Master Yi's. A most recent game was a win, but it was a near loss because our mid Annie went 10-0 in 10 minutes thus thought she was invincible, then gets caught not once, not twice, but 5 times splitpushing (yeah, with an Annie) and telling the rest of us to "stfu noobs". We went from a 2 inhib lead to barely scratching out a backdooring win solely because of that.

I wish Riot would make some changes to the surrender vote. Stuff I like to see changed on surrender vote -5-0 required from 20 min to 30 min (tired of the 4-1 surrenders at 20, me being the "1") -3 min cooldown for team as well as 6 min cooldown per person (don't you hate it when the person doing the worst spams surrender as soon as it comes off cooldown) -Not related to what I said above, but to stop the 4 man premade trolling (which I luckily have never encountered), 4 man premades get 1 vote. The 5th player's vote would carry the same weight as the entire premades, so a 4 man premade attempting to surrender when the team is killing the nexus would most likely have it failed 1-1, instead of passing 4-1. The 4 man premade would vote amongst themselves, if 3 of the 4 members in the premade say yes, that is one vote for the team. If only 2 or less members of the premade say yes to surrender, the 5th player would not even know the vote happened.

I surrender not because I don't think we can make a comeback, but because its not worth the time/effort. Mostly the latter. You have to virtually stop making any and all mistakes. Which if you have premade team is a little easier to do, but if its solo q you don't have as great an impact on what your teammates are doing. That being said, even if you begin to play perfectly(as in no mistakes) the likelihood of you turning the game around is pretty small--and depending on team comp, how ahead the enemy team is etc it gets even smaller. The only way that chance gets bigger is if the enemy team starts making mistakes. Like the ADC getting cocky because they are fed and getting caught out when you have a 60 second respawn timer. Or trying to rush the win and taking heavy turret hits during their siege on the base. Or, probably one of the more common ones, everyone going in one or two people at a time in an attempt to back door the nexus and promptly getting shut out every time until they've lost their advantage.

Zombiephil2 votes

The only time I surrender is when the team has a toxic player/troll who's just ruining the game, to the point where I wouldn't have enjoyed it even if we had comeback and won. My game was a solo queue game, and we were losing by 20 kills, had an open nexus while barely touching their Tier 2 towers, and yet we finished ahead by 5 kills, and won. So yes, the victory was very unlikely, but every game is winnable.

the Anarchit3cht1 votes

Indeed you could win! But is every game worth making a comeback? You sometimes have to evaluate when the game has lots its value in terms of enjoyment. Not just for you, but for your teammates as well. I can't tell you how many times I've been in a situation where the 2 people REFUSING to surrender are the ones that are like 2/11/4 or 1/8/2 and refuse to actually work with the team.

By the way, I expected the downvotes, unfortunately, too many of you are nubs who rage quit at 20. l2p.
