Can we please make it CLEAR that META Breaking is not bannable?

Zombiephil··105 votes·7,305 views

Put a note in champion select, or on the report screen or whatever that says META breaking is not bannable. I've already been harassed several times and threatened with reports for breaking meta. I tried to play Morg JG today and got flamed by our mid and adc, they said they would report me for "trolling". We are halfway through Season 5 and this really needs to be addressed within the client since some players don't even bother reading the Summoner's Code online.

I mean isn't it obvious that you cannot get banned for META breaking? I've already done several things (some don't work) throughout my 17 months of league like Morg JG, Blitz JG, Zed JG, Yi ADC, AP Yi Mid, Shen Mid, AP Shen, Yasuo Jungle, J4 Supp, and guess what? 0 warnings, 0 bans.

Still sick of the threats and reports for this though.

May I suggest this be implemented on the Post game screen? https://support.riotgames.com/hc/en-us/articles/201752884-Reporting-a-Player#h2q5

Successful meta breaking isn't bannable.

Failed meta breaking isn't bannable except for an "unskilled player" report which is simply a way to point out that so and so played quite poorly.

Trolling that disguises itself as a failed attempt to break the meta is totally bannable. The only catch is that it is up to you as an individual to be able to properly discern whether that mid lane AP nautilus is trolling or just having a hard time trying out a niche off-build, or whether your support Udyr really meant to build FotM instead of the 4 pairs of mobi boots he has (hint: the Udyr is the actual troll).

I break the meta all the time (like AP Varus and support Poppy) and I don't get reported for it because I always make sure to know what I'm doing before taking it into a PvP match (practice in bots until you can do it reliably first).

Vellich0r8 votes

Ap Nautilus mid is broken dude.

Noam Braumsky2 votes

Support Poppy is way more broken. In every skirmish ever watch the enemies keep going after her with almost no health and having her escape, normally with her adc getting at least one of them killed.

SlytherinUmbreon2 votes

Poppy doesn't count, she's broken whatever role she plays

Remlap12233 votes

Cannot ever watch Willy Wonka again. Every time something even resembles an Oompa Loompa and I get PTSD from Poppy diving me under tower while she's at 1/10 of hear health and 100-0ing me.

There is trolling, and then there is meta-breaking.

You're fine. Besides, some of those picks sound super fun. Morgana JG has been gaining a rise in popularity (did it months ago, super fun! Ganking mid is just throwing a spellshield on your laner and watching fireworks).

Vegas Dad11 votes

Just keep your meta break out of ranked is all I ask. Sorry i don't think your jungle morg belongs in ranked until it is proven in normals I mean PROVEN, not i had 1 game and did well. Rank is already a sufferance for many reasons last think people want is addition of 1st time jungle morg because i am a meta breaking warrior!.

Lost game last night why? Oh that meta breaker playing soraka top....who was crushed in lane and then jungle wasted it's time trying to gank soraka lane as well. So meta break your nuts off just not in ranked.

Maximum Zilean10 votes

Yep, got the same threats for going mid lane Zilean...

Its not really meta breaking, he is decent as a solo laner. And always has been.

Ravenstiker5 votes

....stupid team mates, I'm pretty sure Zilean was MADE for going mid

Gavran9 votes

But reworked Zilean isn't.

Not that it isn't fine anyway.

MarTayTay2 votes

I used to play Zilean all the time mid. Then the changes happened....

Then the fire nation attacked....summoner 14

The Ecdysiast1 votes

It's as meta-breaking as Morgana mid is. That said, they were both intended to be solo-lane mages, not supports.

Anidan2 votes

Actually they were both designed before a meta was ever established, so they couldn't have been designed for a solo lane vs. a duo. They were designed to be kinda versatile in where they go, much like most of the other original champions. It wasn't a huge surprise to see Annie support in ye olde LoL either, but her scalings and bases made her a great mid laner as well because faster levels meant more damage coming out much faster so she could control the early-mid game. Mid Morgana was great for a faster Zhonya's Ring/Hourglass, and her supporting was great for peel and good bases, while retaining the effective snare and potential for (much riskier) team ulting, and so on.

I think they should not put it in the client because the usual 12 yrs old boy will go: "Omg I'm so clever, since it's not bannable I will go full AP vayne support, I won't buy wards in that position (it's playng bad as support, not trolling) and I'll try to cheese 1v2 the enemy botlane at level 1 without telling my adc! " If my team harrasses me I'll report them since what I'm doing is totally fine.

There isn't enough difference, for stupid people, between tryng something strange/fun/whatever and doing the stupidest thing they can think of without a minimum of planning before.

The Governer11 votes

That's trolling. And trolling =/= meta breaking.

You have to realise the difference before listing this as an example.

Ipols4 votes

I understand the difference, you didn't understand my text (maybe it's my fault, I can't speak english that well) let me try again: If you put in the client that people can break the meta, players will over-commit to that doing stupid picks and calling them "breaking the meta", because THEY(not me) don't get it. I'm totally fine with breaking the meta, in team builder I accept almost anything when I create the room

The Governer3 votes

But as a support (as any support, even Vayne support), you need to buy at least some wards (I am not talking about Sightstone, just stealth wards and/or vision wards). A support that doesn't buy wards at all isn't a support. And in your example, clearly that Vayne support doesn't buy wards, so by the definition, she is trolling. If she doesn't use trinket at all, that's trolling too. It's not breaking the meta.

And I am not sure what you mean by "cheese 1 vs 2 the enemy botlane". I am also not sure what you mean by "stupid picks"? In your definition, what kinds of picks are stupid and what kinds of picks are not?

Ipols1 votes

I know a support has to buy wards, believe me xD It's not about what I would do. Just someone won't for the reason explained. One can argue, maybe beeing wrong, that he is supporting his team with kills letting them take those. Or one can argue whatever he wants, the ipotetical persone we are talking about is just a stupid kid that will make his team lose tryng stupid picks and playng bad just because "Now they can't ban be hurr durr it's written in the homepage"

"cheese" is a term to say "try a risky strategy/unconventional strategy" a stupid pick is a pick is going full ap vayne, or whatever people will try because they think they won't be banned for that. (maybe they will but it will be too late for my game once full ap vayne gave 4 kills in 2 minutes to my enemy botlane)

a pick that is not stupid, even if I don't like it, is AP/AD alistar. I like him as a tank support but building damge on him gives him something to offer to te match, so people should be free to play him that way. No one should feel forced to play champions seen in the lcs and build them that way.

I'm tired of writing now, have a nice day Vayne {{summoner:2}} summoner 13 item 3259 item 3284 item 3285 item 3089

It Hertz When IP1 votes

There's off-meta and there's trolling. Given that Vayne has exactly ONE spell that uses AP, if someone does what you just described then I'm pretty sure that falls under Intentional Feeding.

Ipols3 votes

again: I know that doing it is trolling, my concern is that someone will still do it because he/she thinks that what he's doing is breaking the meta! "ok ok I'll buy lich bane if you want" -AP vayne, 2015

Meta Breaking is all in good fun and trying new things. People need to lighten up.

TheHobbits6 votes

What!? NO! The meta has been set in stone by the all powerful gods of the #LC$bigplayz and any that dare to defy them will the struck down and be forced to spend an eternity burning in the firey depths of Bronze 5.

3TWarrior4 votes

I know the pain, especially when you play by the meta and someone thinks they are indestructible

I play last night as nunu support and corki plays it safe and deadly like every adc could and we shared CS with relic shield and I have fun with the entire team with high damage pokes and a 12 second move speed boost to the team (at the cost of being a viable killer)

I play gangplank support this morning and get a vayne that thinks they're indestructible (they might have been being hit with riot's lag...), the match ends with the opposing carry 9/3 by 20 minutes in and every lane lost

If I get one more retard QQing or raging because I still play Braum or Sona support, or because I DON'T take smite middle, I am going to learn how to DDOS and drophack, and start teaching "lessons"...

??????? i dont think someone like you should be playing this game

3TWarrior4 votes

ignoring the other comment, please don't! XD riot has enough server problems with traffic overload(something easily fixed...) then the drophackers and ddos come and make it worse (ddos typically target more than one game though unfortunately )

You ARE being a dick by doing something that obviously isn't meant to be good for a healthy team comp. Primarily Morgana jg.

IcyPepper4 votes

Morgana jg can work with the right team comp.

There's a difference between meta breaking and just trolling, but some people (meta breakers and bystanders alike) forget the difference.

I mean, sure you need to be certain in ranked games you're doing something that works for the team properly to maximize your chances of winning, but in normals you shouldn't be pressured to pick what other people tell you to.

But hey, at least I ask before I break the meta. Not everyone minds too much, as long as you're polite about it.

Lugg4 votes

If you break meta in a ranked game and suck with it, you honestly deserve to be banned. Play it in a lot of normals to see if it's viable before taking it into ranked.

If you break meta and are successful, you won't have to worry about anyone reporting you.

IcyPepper1 votes

But what if you break the meta and just happen to have a bad game? :<

Most people have somewhere around a 50%ish win rate if they're in a division they belong in, so they're going to lose, meta or not.

Or do you mean by sucking/successful, just performing average instead of going 0/33/0 with jungle Ezreal?

Lugg4 votes

{quoted}

But what if you break the meta and just happen to have a bad game? :<

That's the risk you are taking by breaking meta. If you lose, you're probably getting reported.

If you have a bad game and your team still manages to win, you will get reported anyway. So the risk of breaking meta just isn't worth it.

IcyPepper2 votes

I keep my meta breaking to normals.

But sometimes people are still salty about it, jesus... People really don't understand meta-gaming, it's not one sole strategy. And it's players who form the meta, not the meta shaping the players.

Llanite4 votes

After a certain ELO, people stop caring what you pick.

At lower ELO, people prefer to stick to what has been proven that works, so yes, your off-meta pick is 'trolling' and 7 out of 10 it's disastrous. If you like weird builds, team builder is there for a reason.

OperationDEEZ14 votes

If you do bad with a meta pick, you were having a bad game. If you do bad with an off-meta pick, you're apparently trolling.

Auroramancer4 votes

Biggest thing is already talking with your teammates about it.

Say "do you mind if I do this unconventional pick?", and if they say "please no", then don't do it

You may think "but I want to have fun this game, why should what other people want affect my pick and how i play?" It's the same reason as intentional feeding and trolling; it's fun to the intent feeder/troll, but not fun for the other 4 players.

If your meta-breaking, unconventional pick is discouraged by your teammates and you still go through with it, then it is a negative behavior. That is the most important thing when it comes this issue.

BreadSammich2 votes

This ^

If you don't wanna do that then go to team builder with your pick and then people can see what you're planning ahead of time. If people are mad and/or taken off guard by your pick on your team you simply won't play that well together as a team. Your ultimate goal from champ select to victory/defeat screen is to try to get along with the other players but also to have fun :)

Got reported once for Ryze top. Mages go mid. Got reported several times for Phoenix Udyr. Udyr is Trick2gGadALLDAYEVERYDAY. Got reported for ADC Kennen (both mid and bot+supp). Kennen is a MAGE. Got reported for Heimerdinger top. Also, Mages go mid. Our Nidalee fed because Heimerdinger existed. Got reported for Ryze mid. Ryze is not a Mage. (How does that work?) Got reported for Heimer bot solo. Crushed them btw. Got reported several times for not having flash. TP/Ignite, TP/Heal, Ghost/TP, Ignite/Barrier. Got reported (by the enemy team) for using Teemo as a Support. Got reported for using Exhaust when I wasn't a Support. Got reported for building Sightstone as jungler. Got reported for building Locket of the Iron Solari instead of a Sightstone. Got reported for building Trinity Force on an ADC (also included laughable RL threats) Got reported for playing Olaf. Got reported for not being a Support as a "Support" champion. In this case, Kayle mid.

People can and will report you for things more ridiculous than any of the above. Exactly how many times have you been banned for any of the above example? My guess is none.

You are correct with your guess. But it doesn't hide the fact that I (and any other meta breakers) are being threatened with reports and harassed. Sure, I can mute them, doesn't mean they're not constantly spamming report threats for "trolling".

Snakezzy3 votes

As long as you don't try it for the first time in ranked im fine... but if you try it for the first time ever in ranked, you are ruining people's experiences.

Lucifer3 votes

I'd say just put it in as some kind of report option so people have the placebo to feel better. Basically the same thing that's there for "unskilled."

It's annoying to get reported for "negative att" or "intentionally feeding" by your entire team for playing a non-meta champion when you lose. And you can say whatever you want, when you get 2-5 reports every other game (assuming you win half), then Riot's new shitty automatic system WILL give you a restriction. It sucks.

i want to punch someone every time they tell me that "mid nidalee" is "breaking the meta"... i used to get it when i played her as support but really?? mid was her main freaking role before they changed her hunted to work on jungle mobs. now half time i pick nidalee mid or even top. they yell at me for about 5 min saying im troll.

until i get 7 kills and 1 death that is, then they shut up..

Yes, I'm sure and it wasn't one bad game. It was about half the games so more like 10. The thing is that any time you lose with an off-meta pick, you get blamed. Also, they flame you in chat and if you disagree with them, they often spite report you too.

Nothing I can do about your restriction, but I can suggest you to just mute all whenever you are breaking meta. Make sure not to do anything against the Summoner Code while you are disagreeing with them.

It's not about the Summoner's Code, it's about how many people report you. It really doesn't matter if you don't do anything against ToS if they simply don't like you because you disagree with them or make them face realities they don't like. There is no judge for your behavior. Consider this chat log I got and read my explanations too. No one was called an idiot or a bad player etc. Even Riot support admitted that it wasn't too bad and they were surprised by the reports. That doesn't mean the punishment is reversed though. This isn't a court hearing; it's just consensus. Anyway, I never got a long chat restriction but almost all were pretty unjustified imo.
