Isn't ring a better start for ryze than sapphire crystal?

he's really easy to cs with and it helps you keep yourself in lane along with mana regen, you can also get a wee bit of ap & hp early on

though I guess getting tear faster isn't bad either, I just like the positives on ring more.

Personally I'm fine will delaying my tear by a minute or two for the laning boost ring provides, I don't think however that they should force ring as a starting item and recommend it.

I would say it all comes down to how soon you want to start on Tear of the Goddess. Some people think if you don't rush it, you will hurt yourself in the long run. With Ryze, I can kinda see their point since the only spell he can cast without a target is his Q. The cooldown without resetting it with W and E is long enough that stacking can be difficult. I also think that his clear efficiency actually makes stacking Tear kinda difficult if you're going for Archangle's. Manamume is a bit easier because you can stack with auto attacks.

Delaying Tear with Doran's Ring can still be completely viable however. It is a better starting item because it offers more utility without needing to back very early for that Tear upgrade. Sticking in lane for the full 750 gold may be more efficient since it becomes easier to farm with additional AP

I have another start for you to try though. I am not going to promise that it is any better, again it really just comes down to personal preference. Start with Dark Seal and Refillable Potion. Dark Seal will allow you to regenerate more health, more quickly with each charge of your Potion, than Doran's Ring offers in flat health, and gives a flat 100 mana for Ryze to work with. It's AP starts out the same as Doran's Ring, and stacks with Glory granted from kills and assists. If you can hang in lane for 1100 gold, grab your Tear and upgrade your Refillable Potion into a Corrupting Potion. This makes for very aggressive trades. Pop a charge when you engage and you will almost certainly out trade just about anyone.

Mana regen is based on your total mana, so the higher your mana pool, the faster you regen. So item 1027 actually is a better start for champs that rely on mana. Ring isn't bad, but really is a waste of gold in the long run.

Edit: This is assuming that you take the Meditation mastery.

What? Who told you that, lol?

Unless you have Meditation mastery, more mana does not equal more regen.

Yeah, I assumed that anyone playing Ryze would take Meditation. My bad.

All champions who use mana have a statistic called mana regeneration, or more commonly mp5 (mana regenerated per 5 seconds). This is a base number that grows with level. All mana regenration items that grant +XX% Base Mana Regeneration are multiplicatively increasing this number. It has nothing to do with your maximum mana.

Yeah, I was assuming that people take Mediation. If they do, then yes, their regen goes up. If they don't, you are absolutely correct.

You are probably right, but that is kind of a moot point when you assume that the player most likely has Meditation with either option.

Meditation grants bonus mp5 based on how much mana is missing.

This means you really only gain more mana per 5 seconds when you have a greater amount of mana missing than your base mana.

Considering that in most cases, Ryze will be going for a large mana pool, this will eventually become very relevant, but at early levels, not so much.

But when you consider the gold you are saving early, IMHO it's the better option since you will complete your first first item quicker which leads to reaching your powerspike quicker.

Not necessarily. Ryze may be one of the few exceptions since he does deal additional damage based on how much mana he has, but in most cases Doran's Ring will actually give more of a 'power spike' than a partially stacked Tear of the Goddess. Having that early AP can sometimes make the difference in winning or losing your lane due to being able to bully, or be bullied by, your lane opponent out of lane and/or off of farm. If you can't CS it will take much longer to complete your items. If you are able to CS more efficiently, you will be able to get your items sooner.

it depends when you first back.

idk why you would back after only getting 400 gold in lane.

750 is already a pretty cheap item to buy to give you infinite mana

If you want to get technical, the Dark Seal is a better start for him because it gives AP and Mana. It's not recommended because of his lack of safety, but in terms of stats, it has all he needs.
