My main problem with adding voice chat in league...

option paralysis··32 votes·3,396 views

It would be cool to talk with other people while playing ranked, but I'm not always in the mood to talk while playing league. Sometimes, I just want to listen to music and play the game. However, if you add voice chat, you'd be obligated to use it every time, since enemies will and thus if you don't, you'd put yourself at a disadvantage. It's gonna be the same shit as with dynamic q.

The problem is not toxicity.

the problems are:

  1. people who use microphone and speakers and not a headset, and have a noisy family / their favorite metal band / background noises playing in the background. they can hear you just fine so they think everything is peachy, but on your end it's return of the lawnmower 7.

Also, I don't wanna listen to your favorite trash hop tune even if it comes with a nice touch of microphone echo.

  1. people who's headset is utter shit. they havn't spend a minute configuring it and they sound squeaky / muffled / choppy and you can't understand anything they say while they are being extra chatty.

  2. people who get over emotional and keep screaming in your ears every time they eat a skillshot.

  3. mr and mrs chatty. who can't fucking shut up and you can't say anything. then they ask you why no ss.

If it's anything like voice chat in DotA2, if they become a problem you can just mute them. They're killing your ears with their music and mic echo? Mute. Whining about the game? That's a mutin'. Too much talking about inconsequential things and you happen to not care? On a bus to Mute City. Flaming everyone? Mute and report. And so on.

But my electronic glitch dubstep hop from soundcloud is straight fire!!!!!!!!

Honestly, I used to be against voice coms in league, but there is a lot of people that do not understand macro at all and it's hard to explain the rotations with pings and most of the times they go ignored.

Imagine a german, french, spanish, italian and polish guy are being matched together.

Holy shit, first of all that would be funny af. But it would be scary at the same time.

Oh god I never even imagined being in any of the European servers... That must be terrible for communication

As long as they all try to talk english, that should be fine.

I'm german myself and I imagine when I talk english it sounds like a squeezing butchered pig. If you can even imagine that lul. Accents are a nice invention Keepo

You could say the exact same thing about regular chat.

My main issue is COD kids and squeakers. Those were annoying to listen to then and will still be annoying to listen to now.

Keevalroy1 votes

Looks like the squeakers were offended. I agree with you though.

Just because riot put a vc in the game doesn't mean everyone will be able to use it.

Some people don't have a mic/headset and some people are just socially shy/quiet and don't want to vc anyway.

It'll be fine.

Bunnymap2 votes

It needs to made clear that voice chat is not required, and it probably has to be disabled until you manually turn it on to prevent toxicity.

DrCyanide1 votes

Just like all chat? How long does it take the average person to turn that on, 20 PvP games?

The difference is while All Chat won't effect communication with your own team, voice chat will. Saying it'll be a system you just opt into is like saying pings should be a system you opt into. There's no way it'll really be optional if it gets implemented.

The main issue I have is that as a player, I play horribly if I'm talking but I tend to be really social, so I'd be baited a la Tobias into playing worse. I tend to not be aggressive when talking but when I need to make plays I need to be aggressive. There are a lot of things I would not want heard in a voice chat as I'm sorting through the game because I'm not trying to talk to people. Imagine hearing some guy randomly saying "ok so now I gotta build this to handle the situation going on in mid lane, then I gotta head down here and if the situation changes move here" kind of banter. It's distracting in my experience so I wouldn't want to just push that onto other people, nor would I want it pushed onto me.

that's the only reason voice chat won't be in league, i remember lyte saying this once (even if he isn't here i think riot has still the same mentalitiy)

it has nothing to do with people being toxic or what so ever

Dragfin2 votes

Those who don't use any type of voice chat will not use an in game system.

Those that use voice chat will continue to use what works for them because I highly doubt that the in game system will be better than what's currently available.

There is no good reason for RIOT to implement it.

I don't understand why people continue to push this issue.

If your playing normal's why would you care if you win or lose? Just listen to music.

If you're playing ranked why are you not trying to win?

I don't see the problem or how this is any different from people that don't want to use text chat.

gekyùme2 votes

You can disable it if it actually becomes a thing

coreychichi2 votes

Meh I don't really care at this point anymore. However I've always felt the people crying about not wanting to hear immature/young people are themselves actually the immature ones. Grow up put on your big boy pants and spend 1.5 seconds to hit the mute button if someone is bothering you. We get by in csgo just fine, and believe it or not people are actually less toxic and the call outs/coordination goes a long way.

lol, most of us study english since first grade, so we know how to insult each other in a way we all understand it. :)

in eune they usually say stuff in english but can easily turn to their native language.

also getting called greek or polish is an insult..... yeah

Shuyin1781 votes

I'd play on EUW more just to listen to it. lol

The problem and the reason it's not in probably, is that it's another layer of estrangement-- that is, another thing players can get toxic over. For instance, someone being mad that you're not listening to their voice chat (assuming mute) and taking their orders through it.

I think it's best if people who want voice chat with each other do that... with each other.

Surely Riot realizes why it's best to leave it as it is.

SpongebobIsLife1 votes

I mean im pretty sure you can mute other players, just like you can in other mobas. Voice chat is just too good to pass up, comms can do soooo much for a team.

Venomar1 votes

You don't have to talk or stop listening to music to be able to hear someone say "Ahri roaming top"......?

FuzzyLumps1 votes

They have it in Overwatch and it seems to work alright

Lux Is Mai Waifu1 votes

LoL is a more casual game though, the only game that would be a fair comparison is HotS (both p2w, both free mobas) and they don't have it.

Ehhhhh I disagree with OP, the exact thing already happens today with discord, skype, teamspeak, etcc. I use discord in pretty much every match, and every match that i have a queue partner. Voice chat is already optional for league, just through third party hosting. Adding it to the client could help increase game performance by reducing the amount of programs you need to communicate with your 5 man short of spamming pings and wasting time typing in team chat.

Pros More streamlined communication. Lighter networking demand. Everyone has access to the same exact means of voice chat. (Opposed to me using discord, and my top laner using skype.)

Cons It's WAY harder to regulate voice chat. How do you expect riot to hand out bans to people who are offensive in voice chat without actually listening to the recording? (I mean really guys, there's tons of room for abuse here.) People will tilt much easier, rage quit. I will have to hear how every 13 year old has had sexual relations with my mother.

As long as there is a simple means to mute someone I think it COULD work, but Riot needs to be careful here. This is a feature that you should be careful adding to a game where matches can last upwards of 40 minutes.

Zardo1 votes

For some reason when I use voice coms, unless it's a competitive environment, I don't care as much about the game.

3TWarrior1 votes

it probably has to do with feedback or basically humanizing the game where your brain recognizes the value of a voice more than a text or image

either that or perhaps it just lets you voice your opinions, which would naturally be more important than the current context

Erockandroll1 votes

I think the biggest hurdle is reconciliation between VoIP and text chat.

This is to say that VoIP shouldn't replace text chat. I just recall one instance when I managed to botch my teams comp in a custom game, because everyone else on my team was talking on a skype call.

This might be less of an issue if Riot had their own VoIP. But you have to take in other considerations, such as accessibility. (Given Riot already supports a colorblind mode, they might as well insure that the deaf could still enjoy the game.) But also if one player gets their VoIP muted because no one likes listening to Linkin Park, then they shouldn't complain about lack of communication, if they fail to also use the text chat.

And everything I've mentioned here, is on top of the challenge of regulating chat, along with how obnoxious people can be with it.

AirKingNeo1 votes

Then disconnect from voice chat. Simple, really.

You don't want it? You don't have to use it.

Thumpin1 votes

Don't ruin a good feature because you don't feel like using it. On behalf of everyone else, just mute your teammates and chill if that's what you wanna do.

DarkPh0enix1 votes

So you want voice chat to removed from DOTA 2, CS, CoD, Battlefield and every team game ever? No. Just no. Even when voice chat does exist not everyone uses it.

Ralanr1 votes

Also kinda makes it easier for people to report you for "refusing to communicate"

Voice chat would probably be just like Dota's. You aren't required to use it, it's literally just a button you press to activate your line-in. People think voice chat would make league more toxic, but honestly, Dota has had voice chat for forever and it's doing just fine.

Please no.

Even if there is a lot of good. A little bad or a tiny amount of very bad makes it easily not worth it.
