Ult or Bust Champions

PhantomGG··3 votes·838 views

So in a topic I posted earlier today I said in one sentance "ult or bust" is a terrible design to put onto any champion. That no champion in any video game should be one hundred percent dependent on having ultimate. Such champions would be

Galio Warwick Malphite (once lane is over) Sona (once lane is over)

The last two can be put for debate, but the first two are most defaintly very reliant on having ultimate, and without it, don't really do much of anything unless they have a decent lead.

Is designing champions who are completely reliant on ultimate just bad game design? Or is it ok in some case?

(I am not including transformation transformation or low cooldown ults)

Ryze ?

Nevermind, saw the thing at the bottom. I don't know if you'd want to count that as healthy design or not. I don't really play him that much to say.

He doesn't need ult to do things, he just needs his passive. Problem is the ult and passive have very similar animations so most people confuse them for the same thing.

Personally I think Ryze would be fine if perma rooting wasn't a thing. Get rid of that and you can buff his ap ratios. But that is a topic and debate for another day.

... but he doesn't permaroot anymore

If you pop his passive, the next 6 spells you cast reduce the cooldowns of other spells by the CD of his Q. Mid-late game, with enough CDR, you can nearly perma snare people down for a good period of time.

*5 spells

Also, if you start with root, you have to QEQ in order to root again, and upon casting WQ to end your proc, you still have half the CD left, so that's only 2 roots out. Hardly perma. You get the same results from morgana with a lot less mechanical complexity.

If you combo your stuff properly you can proc that passive more than once per fight, ending up in you have perma ulti or close to it. and perma root.

Sure you can proc it more than once per fight, but then you end up with 2 sets of 2 roots chaining together, but it's not 4 roots chained, and it's nowhere close to a perma root, as perma means several roots all together denying all escapes, like ryze was.

I honestly think riot needs to re think their decisions on certain stuff.

Some champions have a good laning phase: Leblanc Zed .. some have a terrible lane, or rely on level 6 to become useful in lane: Diana Katarina Kassadin

But what im talking about is unrelated to what youre talking about, I personally agree with champ design should not be relied on their ult, and without theyre almost useless. (Fiddlesticks Nocturne , etc.)

Malphite to an extent

Meh...if their adc is fed you want to land that e on them...thats an important thing to do with him at all times of the game.

ashe, is also pretty much useless unless her ult is up

I wouldn't say Galio should be one he still puts out tons of damage but Warwick definately is one also Illaoi I think is one

While ults should typically be game-changing, and some champions are more reliant on their ults than others, none should be completely dependent on it.
