Why I believe that DoTs deserve higher damage than burst spells

1.) DoTs reapply, they don't stack. If CDR reduces the cooldown below the duration no additional damage is gained. However: single target DPS of burst spells scales extremely well with CDR.

2.) Dot have much more counterplay. Easier shielding, lifestealing or spellvamping back up before the whole damage is applied. Even if a DoT will kill you you still can to fight back and possibly kill your opponent.

3.) DoTs draw constant creep aggro and lead to "invisible" damage applied to yourself by poking the enemy laner. Especially on early levels the damage recived is drastic.

Considering these down sides I dare say that DoTs do deserve to have higher DPS than burst spells with similiar range / cooldown. Of cause spells have to belanced considering the whole kit.

However, given the recent developement that certain people claim that DoTs are "toxic" (no pun intended) for balancing and MORE powerful than burst spells with similiar damage/range/CD I feel these main disadvantages of DoTs had to be listed again.

Just to clarify, DoT spells do not attract minion aggro. If you autoattack during the duration or position yourself very close to the minion when they redetermine their target, then they will attack you.

  1. Most DoTs have longer cooldowns than durations. And for the few exceptions, there are no wasted ticks when they are reapplied.
  2. DoTs have limited interaction, the caster does not need to be in range to deal damage after it's been applied.
  3. Skills don't draw minion aggro.

Ground targeted damage over time AoEs already deal relatively high damage. There are very few non-point and kill single DoTs. Cass' poison is mainly there to setup Twin Fangs. Brand's passive is %HP.

DoT are already op. we dont need this game to turn into who can land DoT and get kill first.

burst and dps should always be above DoT. dot is anti-fun. its good the way it is now.

...what.

Alright. Here's a hypothetical.

Two champions have a skill of equal damage on an 8 second cooldown. The first deals its damage instantly. The second deals its damage over four seconds. The two champions begin blasting each other with their spells as soon as they come off cooldown.

Who dies first, the DoT user or the Nuker?

Answer: the DoTer of course. The Nuker will still be ticking toward death while the DoTer is already dead assuming they have the same effective HP. But what if the Nuker pops a health pot? Or his friendly Soraka uses those extra four seconds to live to come zooming over and heal them?

This is why DoTs usually have some sort of added mechanic that makes the DoT relevant and interesting. Swain's amplifies damage, Malz' can jump, Cass' resets her Twin Fang cooldown, Mord's spawns a ghost, ect. Teemo's prevents his Mushrooms from being stacked and instagibbing you. All else being equal, a DoT is always mechanically weaker than a Nuke with identical features.

Just making DoTs deal more damage isn't particularly interesting. But having some other debuff or secondary effect that goes along with the DoT is.
