Please, do us all a favor and not play unfamiliar champions in ranked.

If you never played the champion before then please, stay out of ranked. It ruins the game for the rest of the team. If a champion is seeing good results of recent game changes, it does not necessarily mean they are an instantly learned, op straight from the start of the game champion. Just had a game where someone decided to first time kog'maw. They didn't even read the passive to know what it does. Why can't people just learn a champion in normal queue for a few games to at least get a feel for them?

So please, learn new (to you) champion's basic mechanics before you play ranked.

Don't worry I played Yasuo 2 times in coop vs ai, I basically mastered him.

I agree, but some people are very easy to pressure into playing new champions in ranked sometimes too. In a lot of my ranked games last season i saw countless people bullied into playing a specific champion by our team even though the person doesn't play that and and doesn't know how, then that same person gets yelled at for feeding or making wrong plays with that champion. I'm sure you are just referring to people who intentionally do it, but this is also a case.

Had something like that happen to me during my first placement game this season (though in their defense, it was due to a misunderstanding).

The basic situation is that Master Yi made it through bans and our first pick support was offering to pick for somebody else and swap. One of my teammates suggested they grab Master Yi and our first pick, assuming it was me, chose him.

Now, I have never really played Master Yi aside from a couple normal games years ago. Nonetheless, I ended up playing him and helping carry the game. Thankfully, I try to know roughly how every champion builds and plays throughout the game.

It honestly wasn't too bad though. Our first pick was apologetic for the mistake and offered to take Yi support so I could play who I wanted, though I obviously refused to improve our team composition and get them on someone familiar. I ended playing my next three placement games with them and we had a pretty good time.

On the downside, I think I may have become a dirty Master Yi player since I'm planning to add him to my pool of junglers. Sue me, I enjoyed him.

Honestly, I spent a good amount of time last season experimenting or practicing champions in ranked (at the times I wasn't try-harding my preferred champions, anyways).

In my defense, I had been playing the game for 3 years at that point and I was just starting ranked games (meaning I was around Silver MMR) while I normally played with Platinum and Diamond players in normal queue. At that point, I roughly knew how every champion was played and how most match-ups should be played.

At that point, it was honestly easier for me to learn new champions in ranked queue. It was much easier to practice against people approximately two divisions lower than I was in skill rather than playing a champion for the first time and getting matched against a Master player (that happened to me three times, dear god it hurt).

Though it's generally not something you should do if you lack the experience or skill to get away with it in your current division.

I can see your case as a bit more of an exception, since 3 years of experience and a less complex game made doing that less of a negative impact. But now with so much detail and complexity in every champion (both updated and released), it can be a nightmare for the rest of the team

Agreed. Some guy got mad at me for banning Jhin when he first came out, to which I replied, "learn him in normals". I gave another player the benefit of the doubt and didn't ban Jhin, and by god he fed so hard, trying to justify it with, "i'm new at this champ".

Never again.

I tend to ban champions for the first two weeks after their release. I don't particular care if they are strong or not; I just don't want anyone on my team playing them.

Other than that, I typically just ban Nasus or Yasuo unless I'm specifically banning a counter-pick. I don't trust my allies to handle Nasus appropriately and I don't want a Yasuo on my team (they typically just feed).

Yup. As soon as I hear the words, "first time with..." I instantly go on tilt. I would honestly rather them tell me they are going afk all game.

And yet if you tell someone that in-game, you are "toxic".

i've gone first time yi and first time ashe in ranked, both times i got fed and we won. i don't see the problem with taking a mechanically easy champ into ranked. it's not like if i played yi in normals for practice i would have learned anything, he's simple and broken..

how about you give your teammates a chance before you flame

While yes Yi is simple and broken, other champions are not, such as Lee Sin or Leblanc or Zed.
