How to beat Illaoi -- for all you whiners out there.

Niyumi··31 votes·61,575 views

So, I see a lot of people whining and complaining about how "broken" Illaoi is, and "how drastically she needs nerfs..." when that's not the case at all. In fact, when against a ranged champ, she's absolutely useless, and is pathetic. She is only strong against melee and moronic ranged champs, to begin with. Second, she is VERY EASILY countered, and it doesn't even require any items more than a brain (which, you know, everyone has by default).

So, I'm goinna copy a reply of mine from a thread that's vanished, and put it in my own thread so that everyone can see how to beat the "unbeatable" Illaoi -- with an added bonus of advanced tactics against her abilities that wasn't in my other post.

You know, Illaoi even tells you (in her VO) how to beat her: "MOVE!"

Seriously. The people in this game cry SO MUCH about everything. Literally every single ability of Illaoi's can be dodged or avoided by, you guessed it, moving!

  • Q: She uses Q? Side step. It has a VERY readable animation, and even shows you where it'll do damage. So, like, move! (She even tells you to move as she uses it sometimes)

  • W: She hit you with W? You let her get too close. (Seriously, it gives her an AA range of Tahm for ONE ATTACK, so why not try moving?)

  • E: You got hit by E? Sidestep more, and keep minions between you (Gee, like, you know, every champion with a hook). Or, in other words, move!

  • R: You got hit by her R? Why'd you get that close to her? If you just MOVE, you don't get hit by her!

(Below are some advanced tips on her abilities)

  • Q: Nothing special.

  • W: So even if she does hit you, the damage she does herself is pretty low -- it's the tentacle slap that makes her W dangerous. So if she hits you, move out of the tentacle that's about to hit you, and wow, you take half damage.

  • E: When she grabs you, hitting her lowers the amount of time she has to kill your soul. So, instead of running, beat the snot out of her! She'll either keep trying to kill your soul (lowering the damage you take), switch to you and lose her E's effect, or be forced to run away or die. You also DO NOT need to wait for tentacles to spawn to eliminate the curse -- any tentacles on walls will do the job, but they'll try to smack you when you walk close, so be careful -- Along the same lines, if you kill her (or get an assist on her), the curse ends.

  • R: So if you did get hit, wanna know what to do? Run out of the tentacle hell she just spawned, and wait it out. Don't sit in the middle of all them so that you can be smacked repeatedly by her W + tentacles.

Against a somewhat intelligent person, Illaoi has a VERY rough time. Against people who have no clue and don't want to try, but instead cry to Riot for nerfs, she does amazing. She has zero mobility, zero CC (outside of a slow that's VERY situational), zero gap closers, nothing. She has to literally walk up to you to do anything. So, if you MOVE, you never take damage from her. Hard concept, I know.

Treat her tentacles like Heimer turrets: Clear them if you can, avoid them if not. Half of Illaoi's damage comes from her tentacles smacking you, and all of her sustain depends on a tentacle hitting a champion -- if her tentacles don't hit you, guess what? You take much less damage, and she doesn't heal herself. Her tentacles also DO NOT swing at you unless you're a vessel, so there's no risk involved in autoing one down that she can't protect.

Also, for some reason, armor is stupidly effective against Illaoi. If you build one armor item, or play a champ with natural tankiness, then she does so little damage to you it's not even funny. Even her tentacles will only do ~100 damage if you build ~50 armor early game. So, she's pretty easy to counterbuild too.

So, please, just shut up and actually try putting in some effort and thinking for a change -- you might just beat Illaoi then.

TL;DR: How to counter Illaoi (and she even tells you in her VO): MOVE!

Edit: By the way, did I mention to move?

So, there's what I wrote earlier. Did you see the common thread in there? You can beat Illaoi, quite simply, by moving. This even fits her thematics, since she's trying to teach you how to properly live life -- a life in motion. If you keep moving, and keep track of what's going on, you win against Illaoi. Seriously, if you're a kite-y champ that keeps moving, she can do absolutely nothing against you.

But, you know, so broken. Much OP. Needs nerfs. She makes you think and ACTUALLY counterplay a champ, instead of just buying armor / MR and facerolling to victory -- that is NOT ALLOWED in League of Clickers.

Again, how to counter Illaoi: MOVE!

Gut her

Niyumi12 votes

Yeah, no. That team was absolutely stupid, chasing her like that. She got a 4 man + spirit ult, and another tentacle on the wall. So that's what, six tentacles all smacking down on their team? That's why they died. That's like walking into a Heimer turret field, with his ult turret, and just standing there as he Zhonya's. Should we gut him too?

No, why they died is her bullshit tentacles and bullshit healing.

When Heimer lays down a turret field, you see it coming.

Illaoi just ults a group of people and suddenly they are forced to run away.

You CAN'T fight her because her healing is way too good and the damage is absolutely absurd.

Don't even TRY to bullshit me right now. Illaoi doesn't need any buffs whatsoever. If any changes are going to be given to her at ALL, they would have to be nerfs or the balance team is on some serious drugs.

Niyumi4 votes

Illaoi's ult lasts for what, 10 seconds? If that? So just kite her out of her tentacles, and wow, she does no damage, despite having ulted. Once she's out of tentacle hell, you kill her, and she doesn't heal or do a lot of damage. She actually doesn't do much damage unless people stand in things like morons, so a nerf would absolutely destroy her and make her useless. And ranged champions just hand her ass to her.

And, you know, Jax. But he beats everyone.

i'm sorry. I really hate to be this rude and confrontational but are you brain dead?

At the beginning of the video you see that the game is just barely over 20 minutes in and the Illaoi is 6/2/6.

Strong lead, moving INTO a snowball, but not there yet. and then she gets to face tank and 1v5 for a penta. she walked into a bush, and didnt leave until she had 5 kills.

tell me ANY OTHER FREAKING CHAMPION in the game that can get a penta inside a tri bush at only 6/2/6 with literally all 5 of the enemy team in the same place at the same time.

because honest to god, out of 130 champs i can think of 1. Illaoi apparently. I have a champ pool of 50. 30 i play regularly. all types, all lanes. there isn't a single one that efficient at mass murder.

and before you keep to your opening schtick of "of look a tentacle, i should move" tell me this.

HOW MANY TEAMS WILL YOU EVER FIND IN ANY REGION OF ANY ELO THAT WILL BACK OFF WHEN THEY OUTNUMBER A CHAMPION BY AT LEAST 3 TO 1. these guys had 5. five. f.i.v.e team mates against one whom only had 6 kills and you're telling me every single one of them should have said. "Oh. she ulted. i guess EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US should just back off now because there's no way we can beat her here."

i mean honest to god are you just trying to ride this as far as possible before the nerfs or something? There is just no legitimate excuse that could possibly be made to say that any champion pressing an R button just once indicates that an entire team should just give up when they're only just moderately ahead.

that's just fucked.

Niyumi5 votes

I can think of one: Darius. He hits more people with his Q and heals more, insta-procs his ult on them all, and kills all of them.

And, once people learn how Illaoi works, they'll stop dying to 5-man ults, but that takes a bit more thought than I really expect from League players, so she'll just be nerfed into the ground like any other fun champion. Thought is not allowed, in League.

Here's how that team could have won: When Illaoi ulted, they would all run away, and Illaoi would more than likely chase one beyond her tentacle range. When she does, they all collapse on her, and they don't die from six tentacles smashing down on their faces. Wow, so hard to do, right?

AMYS GRAVE12 votes

So her only counterplay is run away and dont fight her at all. Even if you're 5v1ing her. That might signal a problem.

Niyumi1 votes

Her counterplay is to not get hit by tentacles. Kind of like Heimer turrets.

AMYS GRAVE4 votes

Its not like they spawn under your turret or can be targeted by the turret giving you any form of safe farming at all.

Niyumi1 votes

They spawn on the closest wall to Illaoi when there's room for one (there's a minimum distance between tentacles) and that includes turrets. They don't swing at you unless you're a vessel, so just clear them out -- not hard.

nope, they spawn on a random nearby wall. If you're pushed to your turret odds are good that the turret is nearby illaoi.

Ok, i'll stop farming and trading to clear them out. Hold on illaoi don't attack me until i can clear them out. No problem.

Source then? Otherwise you're just talking out your ass like you are through this whole thread.

You're assuming Illaoi does nothing while you are clearing them out. Just like heimer standing back and letting you take out his turrets. Assuming your enemy is trash isn't counterplay its a bad argument.

Source? Do I need to record it for you and make a video breaking it down so incredibly much that a toddler could understand it? I've played dozens of games with her, and I've been paying attention to how everything works on her, and how she performs (and, let me tell you, against a semi-intelligent team, she is PATHETIC, not even strong in the slightest). Wanna prove me wrong? Go play her. Study it. Come back when you have.

You're assuming Illaoi does nothing while you are clearing them out. Just like heimer standing back and letting you take out his turrets. Assuming your enemy is trash isn't counterplay its a bad argument.

See, here's the thing: Illaoi has a VERY short range on everything but her Q and E - both of which are quite easily dodged. So you go in and clear tentacles that will cause you a problem, and ignore the rest of them. If you're ranged, clearing tentacles is literally just free gold, since she can't do anything to stop you. Melee, just clear them when she's not in range to beat your face in with the tentacles you're trying to kill (remember, they WILL NOT swing at you unless she lands her W or finishes her E on you).

AMYS GRAVE5 votes

So you have no source and just want to say you're right. If you can't prove your statements don't waste my time.

You Can Kill Heimer's Turrets

And you can do it with random AoE, unlike Illaoi's that require 2 autoattacks minimum and dont give lifesteal

Have to say, all this talk of 'just don't go there' really isn't a good quality statement at proving she's balanced either. Even with good rumble ultimate's... he still would have to prioritize a few tanky items to stand toe to toe like that with a team of five.

I'm an Illaoi main now. ^^ One of the most fun champions I've played to date. Adding her to my list of mains... which has like 20 champions now.

I Miss Cannon2 votes

Yeah no wonder you're so biased towards her. May be beatable in lane but the only thing you can do against her in teamfights is splitting your frontline and backline up in a way, that your frontline gets screwed over by their adc and your backline by their Assasin/Bruiser. Yeah no thanks, champion is just incredibly stupid right now. She's like Fiddlesticks in the aspect that she has so much damage potential as long as you hit. The only difference is that Fiddlesticks damage is 10 times harder to hit and for that he does less damage than Illaoi and is less tanky. Nerf her potential damage and/or her healing and if she seems weak after that give her power in form of CC or stickiness.

Niyumi2 votes

In a teamfight, you have the melee go around her, and the ranged focus her down -- nothing she can do if your team is split up and the melee are ignoring her. Just let your backline fight her, kite her, and she'll lose. Have your frontline engage the enemy team.

She already feels weak against players who know how to beat her. Over half her damage relies on tentacles, and smart players just kill them ASAP. Plus, ranged champs just laugh at her, since she doesn't move much.

I think her healing should go down a little bit (like, 3% instead of 5%), and her tentacles should spawn a little faster and swing a little faster. That'd make it possible to kill her a little easier, and she would have more potential to actually fight.

Thank you for making this I'm tired of telling people illaoi is actually weak at the moment she's only strong in clusterf- teamfights and siege compositions since she can harass you if you don't MOVE out of the way like a blitz grab

She needs a balance of power change they need to give illaoi some CC and lower her damage a bit

Sadly riot can't do that since illaoi's entire team is "MOVE or DIE" and they did it way too well

TBH illaoi should have been an ap/magic damage champ She would have CC from rylai however not a hard CC so you could still move, she could have her damage lowered however still have a Bruiser(I refuse to say Fighter)/ Juggernaut build

Her entire kit could scale off of Base ad(Not bonus) and AP while changing her physical damage to magical if they did that she could retain her "MOVE OR DIE" Nature they could actually nerf her damage numbers and she'd have reasonable CC without having to add it to her kit.

Niyumi5 votes

Yeah, she really does feel weak to me. She can do a lot of damage, sure, but it's like standing in the middle of Heimer turrets; if you stand in tentacle smashes, yeah, she wrecks your face. Anyone ranged, or anyone with a brain, though, they just absolutely destroy her. I think her tentacles need to swing a little faster with her W, and her Q needs to be ever so slightly faster, then she'd be fine.

Her damage isn't really that bad either. She can do a lot of burst, but only if you stand in tentacles. Outside of that, it's just really low, compared to what other champs can do.

I don't get why people think she's so broken. I guess having to actually counterplay a champ is enough to call them OP.

Yeah, she really does feel weak to me.

You build her terribly (item 3004 item 3078 are you real) while playing her support for no reason when she's a high scaling juggernaut with low CC

"Dodge the skillshot" is not the end all solution for every single problem, otherwise we'd all just be playing 1 hp Caitlyns and autoattacks would be skillshots for the truest test of skill. Skillshots land and have rewards for doing so. That reward should not be forcing your enemy to choose between all inning a zone control juggernaut in her minion wave or being unable to farm for the next 30-60 seconds

Not to mention her ult gives her a huge amount of sticking power and DPS, lowering the delay for tentacle hits enough that you have to Flash just to dodge them

It's because she can shove in the wave and roam, and then she comes back to your lane fed, because they have not read this article, warded, or put a solid couple of minutes reading Illaoi's kit and deciding to dodge. It's possible to dodge fed Illaoi, but actually fighting her becomes a problem for melee champs. Really I need to know what to do when Illaoi comes back fed. Moving is good, and will keep me alive, but I need to win a fight at some point.

Athenes Lulu2 votes

Maybe not weak. More on the strong side if people know how to pull off her juggernaut playstyle and do it right. If she is smart enough/people are stupid enough, she can easily 1v2.

I would say she's rather one of the more balanced release champs, because she has defined strengths and weaknesses. I mean, think of it like Heimer, but a lot tankier. You don't want to blindly walk into his turret army, but he can still carry and do well if he knows what the fuck he's doing, even if you KNOW how to dodge his skillshots. It's a similar concept for Illaoi, but this time, a different way to work around.

Also remember newly released/reworked champs have learning curves. You can't tell on if a champ is OP or not by just looking at his/her performance in general in the first two weeks, that's not how it works. Yasuo and Gnar were buffed for no reason, they just needed to be "learned" by the playerbase. Soraka's post-rework was even regarded as "shit" even though people just don't know how to exploit her that time.

######Lux and Veigar were overbuffed because of lack of consistent community knowledge. Never forget.

disregardable3 votes

Not effective for Illaoi support. The ADC will zone wherever Illaoi isn't in front of you, meaning your only option is to move backwards. The brute force of her damage (yes, she will hit you with her Q maybe 1/4th of the time), her waveclear, and the location of her tentacles means you're shoved far behind your turret, so you can't cs well. This actually isn't a bad thing if you a Blitzcrank, but any other support is pretty much useless against her.

Niyumi1 votes

So, an ADC, with range far greater than Illaoi, and you can't beat her? Okay, let me tell you how I lost lane BIG TIME (AS ILLAOI SUPP) today: Ashe and Naut, vs. Trist and Illaoi (me).

Started off alright. I started E for the damage and harass, and we pushed them to their turret. Then, something miraculous happened: they started downing tentacles. With all my tentacles down, I couldn't kill Ashe's spirit (and fuck Naut, he's a tank) at all, and even when I tried, she pushed me away from it with her range and damage. If Naut ever grabbed me, they chained CC into me and killed me pretty easily, then went on to either kill MF or push the lane. I died 7 times that game, and 6/7 were to Ashe. We ended up winning, but only because I was able to ult their entire team plus a spirit, and got most of their team to ~3/4 HP and Ashe to ~20% HP. My team was able to finish them off, and end the game.

So, the moral of the story? Use your superior range to focus down tentacles, go hard on her when she tries to E you (this will force her away), and generally just harass Illaoi with your range -- and sidestep her Q.

disregardable2 votes

Sounds you like poor plays on your (and your ADC's) part, to be honest. First of all, those tentacles respawn very quickly and are generally a fucking pain in the ass to attempt to get rid of permanently. Your ADC should've helped you kill the spirit when you grabbed it, and also, when you take focus for attacking the spirit, back off, wait for the ADC to return to CSing, then go back in. Ashe doesn't actually have hard CC before 6, and you should hit 6 before them if you're pushed to their turret. Get the early double kill and you're set.

Also, you as a support get an ult off that does 80% of the ADC's health and you think it's balanced? You think the fact that Illaoi has enough base damage to work as a support makes her balanced?

Strawberrycocoa3 votes

I can see Ranged having an easier time against her, but with the attack range of her tentacles it's really more advantageous to clear them out than it is to ignore them, and melee have a hard time doing that AND keeping in exp/farm range of the waves AND avoiding abilities, for me anyway. Playing as Nasus against her was rough as shit.

I also really think they need to shorten Vessel's duration by quite a bit. It's just not feasible to run around and sling out 6 autoattacks to clear it away while also avoiding Illaoi, and if you engage her to shorten the duration by beating her down there goes the Avoid Her strategy altogether.

The Silver III dude trying to tell people how to play the game lmao.

HxC Manickmonkey2 votes

Your reasoning is flawed Just because some one is not ranked does not make them a bad player, because if that is how it worked it would mean that a smurf Acc makes you a worse player, by your logic you might as well say that "i am what i eat" and "i eat what i am" has the same meaning

The Bíg Ticket1 votes

No he actually is ranked and is in Silver III after like 700 ranked games. Don't know what you are talking about but it makes no sense anyway.

HxC Manickmonkey3 votes

ok so let me elaborate rank is not necessarily a true basis for the measure of skill, some one could never have played a ranked game in their life or merely played a few say enough to have a rank but not necessarily enough to get gold, diamond or plat for that matter does that make them a worse player? (in the general sense of the example not referring to him specifically) and the quote is from Alice in Wonderland - it is often used when referring to a false analogy so basically what i am saying is that your argument that towards his advice holding no merit is flawed due to the fact that you use rank as the only measure of skill

he was merely airing his view and even went as far as motivating his viewpoints so lets take a moment to look at his advice its all reasonably sound and explains a large amount of her kit

would dodging her "Q" help you avoid damage? YES Would keeping a healthy distance from her "W" help avoid damage? YES

you can see where this is going...right

please don't take this as salty or as that i am a brilliant player far from it

but don't disregard something because some one is not a higher rank than you some people might have a great understanding of some thing and still lack the skill to execute it say for example a sports coach he might not have had the talent to be a player and yet he is integral to teams winning games

Ps. sorry for the poor English not my first Language

Niyumi5 votes

What does rank mean, in League? It means you're either incredibly lucky, was carried, or a smurf (I carry 9/10 games, yet still lose. I can't carry like a diamond smurf, so I can't win without a team. I have to get lucky and have a real team given to me). Since this is my very first season (I started late-June) and since I placed S2 (the third highest rank you can place), and was two games from gold WITHIN MY FIRST THREE MONTHS OF PLAYING, I think I have some room to talk. Besides, knowledge of the game and its mechanics isn't locked away behind rank -- I'm not some kid with ADD who can't learn, in fact, quite the opposite. So, I have all this game knowledge, but not enough skill or "common sense" (League-wise) to execute on it -- though part of it is that I just refuse to play gimme champs that use targeted abilities; they're painfully boring, but clickers are how you win.

So, I spammed the hell out of Illaoi when she came out, and I learned all about her kit, how it works, how it can be countered, what I beat, what I lost to, etc. Since people are claiming she's so unbeatable, I figured I'd tell them how I lose, and what counters her kit. Doesn't take a Challenger-level player to analyze a champion and literally watch themselves be countered, does it?

Just go away with all your "Oh, you're silver? You're obviously wrong, and she's just broken. Trust me, I'm X rank!" please.

The Bíg Ticket1 votes

You have a negative winrate in over 700 ranked games rofl...Silver III with bad mmr...don't act like you know the game.

Niyumi6 votes

Yeah, it's hard to win when I'm 26/4, yet everyone else on my team is 5/13. One person does not make a team, unfortunately. I can win lane, yet every other lane loses, despite me roaming, ganking, TPing in, ulting their lane (as GP / Ez / other global ults) or whatever. I can't carry hard enough to make up for four people who are incompetent.

Now, when I have an actual team that knows how to play the game (a rare thing in silver), I absolutely stomp, and we end the game like 25-5. On my own, I can out-play the majority of the people I come across (even beat a plat Azir (some guy was telling me he was impressed) with over 3k games back when I started, as TF) -- so it's not really me that causes all those losses, believe it or not. If ranking was based on individual performance instead of team performance, I believe I could be high gold to mid plat at best. Diamond players typically hand me my ass, though I've beaten a few.

Yes he is right...he is stuck in Silver after 700 ranked games with a negative winrate but that is only because his team is holding him back and he is always 20-0 in his lane and ganks and roams but his team always loses him the game. Incredible how you guys actually believe that rofl.

I have gotten out of low elo too many times on too many accounts to believe that bs.
