Wtf is this Spear of Shojin item on PBE?

Neriticc··46 votes·16,017 views

Essence Reaver’s Essence Flare was only used by a few champions and the champs that have no mana like Riven and Renek sacrificed some item stats for no gain.

Now you are going to release this new item with the exact same Essence Flare but now it gives health instead of mana, which basically means now Riven and Renek cannot get punished for this anymore and all champions that will abuse this new item will be more tanky than the Essence Reaver soon to be reverted.

All you guys saying Jax is cancer with Essence Reaver. Now he will build Spear of Shojin, go URF mode and be more tanky than before. GL guys.

I don't think champions should be able to go into urf mode in general

If you want to get technical about the change of urf mode items,

buying this new spear compared to current ER on a manaless bruiser (aka riven/renek): costs 400 more gold. gives 250 health gives 15 less AD

the build path is also of note: BF sword, kindle gem, long sword

compared to ER which is: BF sword, warhammer, mana crystal

At worst right now, a manaless bruiser only has to suffer having a mana crystal in their inventory. But they also get the benefit of sitting with 2 longswords (warhammer components) before they finish the item.

So to summarize what has changed Switching from ER to Spear: become slightly tankier, losing damage, 400 more gold, and slightly less aggressive build path but without the mana crystal.

Also this is 100% opinion but I don't think the tank stat is going to matter. Like this season and the last, health/armor/mag rez have just been... bad...

good, looks like theyre still not entirely giving up on the new fighter items. give us atmas next, so juggernauts can actually scale off building tanky.

As someone who plays quite alot of juggernauts, I really don't think that item is needed. Many juggernauts already deal huge damage with their kits and current itemization, giving them even more damage while building tank items doesn't seem necessary for me.

the entire point of the class is to scale into tanky melee carries who win battles of attrition and are able to take on multiple opponents in exchange for low target access and utility.

its definitely needed for a lot of them. the only juggernauts that are worth shit right now are aatrox and urgot. urgot isnt even technicially a juggernaut being a ranged champion, and aatrox doesnt even build like one. he just builds flat ad to blow people up, and is also getting nerfed next patch.

Garen Darius DrMundo Olaf Nasus Yorick Udyr Volibear Illaoi Shyvana

out of all of those only a few of them are actually good right now or able to build tanky enough to survive their own win condition. which is getting into melee range of multiple opponents.

if illaoi tries what shes supposed to do and get into the middle of 5 opponents for her ult, she literally dies to cc and focus fire during half a second of her ult animation. darius has the same problem and dies during the 3 to 5 seconds before his q comes off cooldown. garen survives a bit longer but just overall deals shit for damage unless he flashes ignites on squishy villains with triforce.

even nasus is still shit after his buffs. he deals a lot more damage when stacked, but its worth nothing when he gets kited and still dies in seconds.

the fighters that are currently strong are mostly mobile skirmishers and divers with more versatile kits.

i think juggernauts need item 3005 to be able to carry on tankier builds and scale into sustained damage threats instead of being forced to rely on stacking ad and triforce to play like some sort of shittier assassin who can only fight opponents by blowing them up with flash plays.

Does Atmas really offer enough durability to solve that problem though? I'd love for Atma's to be in the game because I main Gnar, but if resistances actually solved durability issues the meta wouldn't be where it's at today. Juggernauts absolutely need something, but Atma's isn't enough.

atmas would allow juggernauts to build more durable and still deal enough damage. it would make items like item 3083 more valuable again.

good that youre mentioning gnar though, because they definitely need to make it melee only.

I just don't think we need Essence Flare (nor Conqueror for that matter) in the game - it's a cancer mechanic, extremely strong on some champs (those who like AAing, and/or resets). Jax with this and conqueror is just god awful to play against.

Getting more tanky while buying offensive items shouldn't be a thing at all.

This is why tanks are bullshit since season 7.

MankeyMadness1 votes

Cleaver and Rod of Ages have literally ALWAYS been a thing. Remember Rylais before Azir got it destroyed, had 100 AP + 400 HP + 40% slows?

Also Jax gains 40% of his offense stats as resists. Buys a gun blade and gets tanky. Gets trinity + GA and now has a truckload of armor, and free health AND 55 AD

MankeyMadness1 votes

Maybe ... just maybe, Juggs and bruisers should scale off items and not have half their late game strength at level 2. What do I know, I just play Graves and Monkey boy.

PS No one buys Titanic for the AD except Fiora, nerf Cleaver to 10%CDR or boost its gold cost. And gut Jax. Dumpster him harder than Irelia got

Why should they be able to scale off building tanky?

Why should they be able to scale off building tanky?

for one, it would push them into healthier damage patterns. atmas reckoning scales up their ad over the course of a fight instead of frontloading it. right now, juggers mostly make themselves relevant by itemizing into burst and flashing on squishier targets.

but mainly because juggernauts are supposed to be tanky melee carries.

theyre supposed to roll 4k to 5k health builds, be extremely hard to take down and roll over anyone they get into melee range of. even multiple opponents in case of Darius Illaoi

thats not to say theyre supposed to automatically win every fight, but champions like Irelia Jax Camille and marksmen arent just supposed to win auto attack damage races in melee with them or literally 100 to 0 them in less than 5 seconds.

their downside is, that getting into melee range and staying there is hard for them, and they dont provide more to their team than raw carry potential.

juggernauts are supposed to be able to fight front to back without dieing in a few seconds. but they cant fly across two screens into the face of a priority target and lock it down like Camille can, and they dont have the team utility of tanks.

I don't think items are the problem with jax honestly. Jax is just op. They'er slowly nerfing him and I think eventually he will be in an ok state.

SexualNuts4 votes

That's not really correct though. All of the strong things in the game right now just fit perfectly with Jax.

Hybrid fighter who can't reliably build pen: Conqueror gives him a huge bypass to resistances anyway. Massive innate attack speed: Conqueror and runes give him huge amounts of free attack damage. Massive innate attack speed: lots of procs using item 3748

Low cooldowns: Trinity and Essence Reaver each giving 20% CDR and then ER lowering cooldowns based on auto attack speed = urf mode Jax.

The items and runes are broken on some champions. But due to Jax's kit, several of them work incredibly well on him.

Conqueror needs a rethink / nerf, Trinity needs less CDR, Essence Reaver (now spear) needs a rethink.

Stupid stupid stupid. Jax IS a bit OP, but it's because of how well his kit synergises with the above. Nerfing Jax isn't the bloody answer - his kit is simple and stands as a benchmark for what items and runes are broken since he can tap into so many of them. This isn't an Ezreal problem where the champion abuses items - it's a case of Jax's kit is an easy indicator to see what is broken.

MankeyMadness1 votes

Jax CAN build pen too. item 3124 gives him dual pen (fortunately it's not very much though.) and turns him into a walking chainsaw (note: dont know if he builds Rageblade in high elo, only that it works.)

SexualNuts1 votes

The item is dog crap on him now, sorry. When it increased AP and AD it was good for him in situations, because of how well each works for him (and his ultimate). Now it is just sub optimal compared to other items you can get for Jax. And again Jax will always take conqueror now, so the pen on rageblade isn't all that useful - you could say it's good for tanks but you're probably better off taking lifesteal from any of the below.

item 3078 item 3508 item 3146 item 3748 item 3153 item 3812 item 3053 I wouldn't swap any of these items out for rageblade now

That passive is cancer. Doesn't matter that it's a new item, it shouldn't be in the game at all.

And yet people cried that Fervor was removed

Fire Blaustoise1 votes

i think its unrelated... but fervor was braindead too.

It's fine, Spear of Shoujin makes more sense than (8.14)Essense Reaver, makes more sense on its users and might see more use than just 4 champs. They said they may lower the effect from 20% to 10% btw, so it's going to be more general but less strong.

MLDzXnRRR3 votes

I'm not sure at all that Riven/Fiora/Jax/Rene/Yi/Lucian are balanced with so low cds during ER passive duration. Stupid RIOT balance team obviously can't understand why Yasuo is the most hated champ and decided to give us more of the same...

Selec2 votes

I think exactly the same that all of you.

Completely unnecesary item. Plus they're still saying that item is focused into be usable by ADC and Bruisers, that's something it's not gonna happen. ADC don't need/don't want to spam skills, most of them need to focus in deal autoattack damage.

It's just an unfair item, some champions will abuse the item, as we already know, and some of them simply can't build it.

Unhealthy for the game in all stages.

Sire Hippington2 votes

I think the whole idea of essence flair is pretty bad and near impossible to balance, but given that we have phantom hit for over 3 years now, i doubt riot cares about that.

FSRER1 votes

I havent seen this item in years. It was removed since it was 1 of 5 ultimate items which means if you builded all of them there was no counterplay. So, if it is the same with the old one....we are not going to have fun.

BadPiriPiri1 votes

It also costs 400 more Has -15 AD

So it is a overall nerf

So, funny story. Yesterday I was playing in a game where Riven had Essence Reaver and Death's Dance. She was jumped on by Diana Nunu and Jax, and literally took almost no damage the entire 1v3, killing all three of them.

IG Ziko1 votes

This item is much healthier to the game. Less damage and less agressive build path and it costs ton of gold.

lykkelas1 votes

this item, black cleaver, and transcendence

think of the possibilities

Z3Sleeper1 votes

Shhh don't complain about it. It'll hit live and massively overbuff every user. Then every user will get hotfixed to oblivion.

Goodbye Jax and Riven and good riddance to you both (and maybe Renekton rip).

Mecha Incognito1 votes

The biggest problem with the item is that the essence flare gives attack speed, which should definitely be removed, makes it way too effective. I'm Ok with it having a small amount of health.

My Waifu Vanilla1 votes

The AS doesn't do anything for like....every champion that buys it right now. Almost all the users rely on AA resets to get the procs and not their inherent AS which is why they don't buy like any other AS items besides Trinity (Jax) or BoRK (Lucian). The AS opens it up to more users. Removing the AS will do absolutely nothing to the likes of Lucian or Riven who really just don't care about that stat when they are weaving in abilities during their attack timer anyway.

Mecha Incognito1 votes

It does a lot on the fact that it's making you proc the effect much more often, and the effect is already good enough for it as a 2nd or a 3rd item, but throwing on that bonus attack speed will probably push it over the top as a 1st item.

MasterYi

I will be very excited to build this on MasterYi [sg-syndra]

Moonscourge1 votes

Honestly an item with that kind of effect shouldn't have 60 AD attached to it. I'd much prefer if it was a full tank item with only armor, making it a potentially interesting item for their defensive buys but also probably a bad idea since you're not getting any combat stats to kill people faster with, so it's not an instant rush to win.
