Do devs even play their own game ?

option paralysis··11 votes·2,330 views

You literally need to play like 15-20 games to see what the fuck's wrong with this game. I don't understand how can someone that manages such a big game and gets PAID to balance it, can do such a horrible job. I don't know what the fuck these latest changes were supposed to do, other than create a whole different set of balance issues. In the last 50 games, I MAYBE HAD 10 ENJOYABLE GAMES. This is insane, or I'm insane for still playing it. Who the fuck enjoys having a braindead 0/8 top laner that feeds the enemy jungler, then they get herald and push through 2-3 towers and if other people feed too, they can literally end the game in 15-20 mins with herald, easy. WHO FINDS THIS ENJOYABLE ?????

Even faker complained about solo q and bot lane, like he said, it's never 50/50 battle in bot, it's always just one bot lane destroying the other, and you just flip a coin if you're on the winning or feeding side. I don't get this shit anymore. How can you balance a game from preseason and not do anything to fix it in 8 MONTHS ???? I literally have to be 15/0 every game to have any chance of carrying it, because god knows every game is a coin flip and there aren't any games that are a true battle and you keep going back and forth and win or lose, you know you enjoyed that shit. No, that doesn't happen anymore. It's always just one team stomping the other. I just got demoted in flex q to plat 2 LOL because you literally can't carry shit when your top laner goes 0/9 and the enemy top laner kills you in half a second. How can I outplay that ? I was d1 earlier in the season and now I'm getting demoted in flex q playing against plats and golds. I try to play something out of meta, nahh bro you can't because you gotta carry every single game and if you're not 15/0 when you coin flipped a bad team, it's gg. I lost any hope of this game getting better, devs just don't have a clue what they're doing. I just hope that when I get a better pc, I will have enough willpower to quit this game.

This guy just seems salty because he is losing his games. Does not have anything to do with Riot's balance team. Would love to see an in-depth "Balance Plan" from him

Couldn't care less what you think, you're hard defending balance team without reading what OP is saying (which is why im implying you have Riot's dick in your mouth), claiming he's "salty because he is losing his games." I'm not losing my games and im still tilted as fuck that every game is either stomp or be stomped and once a stomp starts theres no stopping it.

Note: I do not find stomps fun, even when my team is the one that stomps. Sure, I win; sure, I get LP, but am I genuinely improving as a player? Nope. How hard is it to kill your enemies and take objectives when everyone on their team has 0 kills and upwards of 3 deaths?

And yet I did read his post. He is claiming that Riot balanced poorly.

Directly followed by him saying his team is braindead which in no way reinforces the statement that Riot balances poorly.

He provides no evidence to the balance. I agree that the meta is always shifting and changing to keep the game ever changing and a lot of people do not like change. I am more than open for a discussion of FACTS and on how the game can be balanced into a better state.

Blatantly insulting Riot and then other's who are voicing their opinions to why someone may be acting salty will not better the game.

Hopefully you respond for discussion and not some brush off insult or excuse of "not caring about or that my opinion is invalid to you"

post edit (I should not have been as harsh to original poster but lots of people complain with no basis or facts)

All right, you want facts? Let's start by talking about top lane. If you've been playing ranked at all, you'd know that Irelia and Camille are some of the most popular picks for top ATM and are regarded to be the two best champs for that role.

Irelia has been busted since her release and is pick/ban in higher elo (nearing 100% there). Meanwhile, she sits at a 30% ban rate across all ELOs according to lolking http://www.lolking.net/champions/irelia#/overview. Meanwhile for comparison, the current highest winrate toplaner, Wukong (according to champion.gg) sits at a mere 1.1 ban rate across all ELOs http://www.lolking.net/champions/monkeyking#/overview.

This is primarily due to her insane ability to come back after just 1 item: Trinity Force. You can make her go 0/4 in lane. It will not matter because after she gets this item, she will start being able to fight you and your team if you guys can't close out fast enough. This is due to her high damage reduction ability, large AOE ult, and % healing on Q.

Let's take a look at Camille. Insane mobility and range, significant damage on Q with significant damage reduction on passive shield. In a team comp consisting of Irelia and Camille, if you pick an immobile carry, you will be feasted on endlessly. Note: I don't play ADC or mid, but it really does suck when yours gets instapopped in a teamfight by one of the champs mentioned above.

Now you may argue that champions like Akali are similar in their ability to come back (Akali comes back after gunblade), but she is inherently less tanky than Irelia and Camille and her itemization is less tanky as well, so she can be shut down easier. Irelia with Triforce and Tabis is a force to be reckoned with mid-game, no matter what her score is. Similarly, Camille with Triforce and Tabis isn't that easy to stop either.

In bot lane, you have not only removal of crit on IE and ER and general item price increases with the price of BORK being lowered, but also insane power given to supports in terms of gold generation and damage. In many games, I have seen the caster support outdamage the ADC mid-game, solely due to the amount of gold revenue (items and components) that they earn for doing, essentially, nothing. With the introduction of new, cheaper AP items such as Twin Shadows and Shurelia's Reverie, caster supports are able to hit item powerspikes much sooner and are able to have much more influence around the map, even if they go even with the enemy support. They don't have to CS, just press a few buttons from time to time and help engage/disengage fights. If gold generation was significantly reduced for supports, I do think this role would be a little more balanced. Riot is taking a step in the right direction by nerfing shield users, but it is not enough.

Across all lanes, with the exception of mid for the most part, you also have the Resolve tree being a major issue. Sure, they nerfed Aftershock in terms of its cooldown and tweaked a few numbers, but face it: it gives 70-120 (based on level) bonus armor and MR for 2.5 seconds, then deals a shockwave that deals 10-120 (+3% max hp + 15% bonus ad + 10% AP magic damage) to enemies. This makes it especially overtuned for tank supports and tank junglers, such as Leona, Alistar, and Sejuani, who aren't really affected by the nerfs to its cooldown because they only really engage when they can proc it again. In the early levels (1-5), if they engage on you with CC, they are engaging with a Dead Man's + Spirit Visage worth of resistances. What the hell are you supposed to do against this when you're level 4 and cooling with 1 starter item and 1 component at max? The scaling on this rune is also disgusting when you consider that they just nerfed crit items and item powerspikes by increasing gold value for ADCs. They won't be able to reliably kill aftershock users until much much later in the game, and by this point, the game will most likely be over already.

In resolve, you also have Bone Plating, which gives you 15-40 damage reduction for 3 seconds, for 3 attacks after being damaged. Combined with Grasp or Aftershock, this makes trading in lane near pointless for you to the point where you are virtually forced to either use it or play a balls to the wall lane bully and try to pressure your opponent hard before you get ganked and try to stall them from their tank items as long as possible. This is even more of an issue for botlane, as it makes AA trading in the early levels virtually pointless if your opponent is using Fleet Footwork (which is also a major issue; either take out the MS boost or reduce the healing significantly for it to be balanced).

No other tree gives you as much early power as Resolve. The offensive trees are not on par with Resolve until deep midgame. For example, this can be seen with Grasp turning into the most recommended rune for Fiora, over Conqueror. You'd think with all the true damage she deals and how long she stays in combat for, Conqueror was intended for champions like her, right? While that may be the case, many have realized how stupidly overtuned Resolve is that the advantages given to a champion from this tree are far too good to pass up. Why fight your enemy using skill when you can heal for 1/8 of your HP by clicking on them once or gain 70-120 armor by CCing them one time? For comparison you need 3 attacks to proc Press the Attack, Electrocute, or Hail of Blades, but Grasp is on a 4 second cooldown and you only need 1 attack to proc it. Similarly, for aftershock you only need 1 CC to proc it. This makes it much much harder for a bruiser or fighter to undergo a sustained fight with a tank if they do not choose to run resolve primary or secondary. Riot has been trying to compensate for defense creep by adding damage to the game, but the solution is to tune those numbers down. Maybe make Aftershock only last for 2 seconds, while giving 50-80 MR + Armor based on level. Maybe decrease the amount of HP that grasp gives back to you. Don't add more bullshit damage to the game to try and compensate for Resolve being in the game. This only punishes champs who don't build resolve.

Resolve is the reason why every single match at MSI was basically Ornn vs. Gangplank. Minimal interaction, maximum resistances, maximum healing, insane tank scaling. Who genuinely wants to play like this in Solo Q? With the weakening of ADCs, who's gonna reliably kill resolve users in the mid and late game?

As an example, Match 1 between RNG and KZ at MSI 2018 had Sion vs. Irelia mid. RNG had a teamcomp of Ornn top, Skarner jg, Sion mid, Ezreal adc, Janna sup. KZ had a team of Fiora top, Sejuani jg, Irelia mid, Cait adc, and Braum sup. Guess what? The match lasted 32 minutes and the team with more tanks (RNG) won. Skarner, Ornn, and Sion were either all using Resolve or building tank or both. A similar pattern of tanks stalling LCS games is present if you take a look at the stats for the other games as well.

In addition to Resolve being overtuned and its frequent abusers being unfun to play against, among many other things, we have matchmaking being a mess as well, with new players starting placements being at 1300-1400 MMR instead of starting at Bronze 5 MMR (800-900) and climbing their way up. Doesn't it make more sense to expect people to WIN games to climb to their true elo than to lose? Let's say someone's true rank is Silver 4. Doesn't it make more sense for Riot to expect them to get there by starting at baseline Bronze 5 MMR and winning 3-4 games to get there, instead of losing 6 at a higher MMR?

Riot also needs to fix the ability for players to first time champs in ranked. Many other competitive arena games do this, so I don't really see why League can't too. Maybe make it so that a player needs mastery 3/4 on a champ before they can take them into ranked. This would encourage people to practice offroles in normals too, so that being autofilled doesn't turn the game into a complete shitshow like it currently does (yes, I'm looking at you jungle and support mains that get put into lanes and proceed to lose the game in 5 minutes).

These are just some of the prominent issues in the game right now. There are many, many more, but I really don't feel like explaining myself to someone who isn't gonna read this anyway and is probably just gonna read the first line and respond "LUL U THINK IRELIA IS OP AND CAMILLE XDDDDDDDDDD GIT GUD NOOOOB. SWAG IM 12 BTW.".

I will mention them, but not really go into depth: Snowball effect making most games over by 11-12 minutes with a significant lack of counter snowball (no increasing shutdown gold did not stop this), forcing players to play with an AFK until FF at 20, tremendous disparity in matchmaking skill levels, especially if you find yourself unlucky enough to be on a winstreak (this is when Riot will give you 4 bads and expect you to hardcarry). There's also a de facto mentality of "if YOU cant carry, YOU don't deserve to climb" which is totally toxic, antifun, and unhealthy for the game. I believe anyone who plays well with their team does deserve to climb. Someone shouldn't be prevented from climbing solely because they are unable to carry 4 50kg sandbags up a 5 mile mountain.

TL;DR: hehe xd. nothing i say is important cuz im not a riot fanboy and i acknowledge that there are things disgustingly wrong with both balance and matchmaking but thats a little tough for some to accept and i understand. not everyone is born with equal cognitive abilities

Now Piero was respectful to you in his reply, but I'm going to be blunt and rude:

Spend less time using your unmanaged negative emotions to respond with cringey retorts and insults and spend more time creating an argument with factual statements that supports your thesis. You know, less child-like venting and more big-boy talk like a mature adult.

Like seriously, what kind of respectable person says that lmfao. You're clearly just trying to be a dick and it's more embarrassing for yourself than it is insulting for anyone else

My dude if you just write like you did for most of your facts and omit the toxic part at the end people will talk to you and discuss the problems. I am not saying that Riot is perfect or even adequate at balancing all the time but there are more factors and just responding with hatred and not keeping a line open for communication and discussion will backfire and hope of fixing the problems you outline. I am about to read your longer response in more depth

Thanks for immediately villify me for defending OP :). Really shows the true nature of Riot fanboys. I only said that because he immediately commented "this guy's salty cuz hes losing games," which promotes complacency rather than discussion and possible improvement of the game. Thanks for immediately villify me for defending OP :)

absolutely false, and this shows either your reading comprehension is poor or you just refuse to accept the truth. Everything about my argument was to highlight your lack of an argument and willingness to just purely insult without any constructive criticism.

"constructive criticism" like...you know, every other word of the comment you responded to but chose to just ignore. Here, I'll highlight it for you

Does not have anything to do with Riot's balance team. Would love to see an in-depth "Balance Plan" from him

He did not just say "he's salty cuz he's losing games" nor was that even the main point of his comment, but that's literally the only part of his comment you seem to notice lol.

Also, I am by far a Riot Fanboy and have criticized them on many issues. But I don't need to defend myself, nor should I have to, because the topic of this discussion is not about my character but yours.

So once again, you have no argument and just fall back to insults like calling people fanboys and downplaying your own comments while ignoring 80% of everyone else's.

Seriously, what point have you actually made in your comments so far? I can think of 2 things:

  • "If you disagree with me or OP then you must be fanboy"
  • "I dislike this meta and the direction/how Riot is balancing the game"

both of these are extremely opinionated without any presentable basis

If, somehow, you still don't get it. This is the only other way I can think to explain it at the moment:

While Piero and I both had insults in our comments, they were not remotely close to the message of the comments or goal of the comments because they contained counter-arguments, analysis, and facts. Your's however contained only insults and was obviously written in order to attack us, an extremely immature and pointless act.

So, in essence, stop being childish and start writing better replies/posts in the fashion I see you've done below about top lane's meta. It was a pretty damn good by the way, I plan on heading over to the post you made and providing my opinions there. That is unless you "couldn't care less what I think". If so, the feeling is not returned though.

I said you CAN carry but you gotta go at least 10/0 to do it, and obviously I'm not gonna be that fed every single game.... where in my other regard, it's really easy to get someone feeding on your team heavily, and lets be real, noone ever really loses lane and goes 0/1, they go 0/5 at least and from tehre on it's a 4v5 and in this snowbally game you just lose the game because you can't outplay 0.5 second death.

And this doesn’t apply to the opponent team?

jesus christ man, use some logic. "I" won't be 10/0 literally every game. But enemy team can be, because why ? because you don't play against the same player every single game, thus someone on the enemy team can be fed every game and someone on your team can feed every game. Because there are 9 different players every game, common sense.

So you are saying that every game you can have the feeder, but there is a zero percent chance that you will have the one getting fed while in turn saying that the enemy team never gets the feeder? Correct me if I’m wrong.

The only answer i can come up with is that botlane champs often feed or get fed as a couple: so assuming the same number of successful fights, you will be 4/0 while the enemy adc will be 8/0 (with a 0/0/8 support)

Sounds like you have more issues with matchmaking then balance.

They go hand in hand. If game balance were optimal, there would be much less complaints about matchmaking and vice versa.

This isn’t possible and never has been. You can’t make everyone happy at all times when it comes to balance. Optimal balance would be balancing around high elo, but then low elo players wouldn’t be happy.

The game is balanced around the pro scene and LCS currently. We all know scuttle changes were explicitly made for LCS games to have more early action so viewer count would increase. Resolve is currently in the state its in (overtuned as hell) because the 5v5 baron deathballs in LCS is what makes Riot the most money. Do you even know how much you make for having 100K+ viewers for a stream on Twitch (which is what LCS games typically bring in)? Even master and challenger tier streamers are expressing frustration and disappointment with balance and matchmaking. IWillDominate, Tyler1, Voyboy, QT, for example. Scarra basically treats the game like a chore. They aren't having fun and are playing solely because its their job and neither is most of the playerbase. Now consider that these are people who make money playing video games, which is a dream job for most of society, and it is really really sad to see them express such frustration with the game in its current state because it's basically become as mentally taxing as a normal office job for them. If that's how they feel, how do you think the rest of the playerbase feels?

PS. Downvote this post too fanboys. Riot has gripped you by the balls and isn't letting go. Pretty sad that you stand up for the game in its current state and are completely unable to discuss with an unbiased perspective, instead choosing to circlejerk :)

I feel as though I am very much trying to discuss this and you are pushing people away with these end comments. I again will stress that what you are saying is intelligible and valid (yet some arguable) points that we should move to a new boards post!

It is not, it is not at all, if it was, champions like Yi, Darius, Yasou, low elo pubstompers would get buffed to be good at that level rather then meph or never picked.

Yeah because Riot is trying to follow a “balance for everyone” rather then balance for one section of the game, you can’t make every side of this game happy, it isn’t possible, do you nerf and add or take away mechanics that make the top 1% happy, said master and challenger players while ignoring the 99% or do you try and appease the 99% while in turn pissing off the people who actually understand the game?

Now consider that these are people who make money playing video games, which is a dream job for most of society, and it is really really sad to see them express such frustration with the game in its current state because it's basically become as mentally taxing as a normal office job for them. Because the low elo which makes up the majority would not like the higher tier balancing of the game, they wouldn’t. If we are going to use the top 1% as an example, Scarra, qtpie and IWD all agree that Yasou sucks and he is only good at pubstomping, if you lose to one in lane, it is because you are bad. If you were to say that here, you would be downvoted to oblivion and that is just one example.

not do anything to fix it in 8 MONTHS ????

Them not fixing it in 8 months isn't enough to provide enough willpower for you to quit? That is 4 months from a year.

And considering how humans work, it takes 6 months to break a bad habit. They had more than enough time.
