Non tank supports and their role in the current meta game.

So this post is mostly to ask other peoples thoughts on where non tank supports stand in the game. This does not include non traditional "supports" (ziggs, ekko, Rengar, basically any other traditional mage/assassin being used as a support).

As it stands i really enjoy playing Sona, but i often feel like i don't really do anything for a large part of the game. Since i'm support i can't farm, (you know because sona is so well know for ability to do that /laugh), and unless my team goes for a bunch of early ganks and i get a ton of assists, i don't usually end up with enough money to start building something beyond the standard support items need (boots, sightstone, mana regen + cooldown reduction item) until i'm somewhere around level 12-14.

While i can't say for sure, i think i would likely experience a very similar issue with almost all the other non-tank supports. I know the couple times i've played someone like Soraka or Nami i've felt like i wasn't doing all the much unless the enemies were very stupid and just stood in all my abilities.

Are you a tank? yes[ ] no [ x ]

Are you Janna? yes[ ] no [ x ]

If both No, then you're bad in this meta.

I main Nami and don't see any problem with non-tank supports whatsoever. My poke-game in the laning phase is excellent, and ganks never go as they intend because of getting locked down by my CC.

Focus less on making yourself powerful, and use your strengths to boost your team as a whole. You can carry your team so that you have more gold than the enemy carries just by sheer number of assists. Non-tanks are perfectly capable, and the tank meta is not as prevalent as it was when Cinderhulk first arrived.

Ranged supports are still good. If you're good at punishing, the enemy will never be able to get aggressive and go for a kill unless they receive a gank. Positioning is just one of the more important skills when you're squishy.

You're a support, going without tons of gold is what happens. The ≈25 min mark is a reasonable point by which you should have Boots, the second tier of your gold item, Sightstone, and Mikael's (or similarly valued item) finished.

Non tank supports in this meta are the ones who can disengage fights easily and peel for their carries even when 2-3 tanks are on them.

Janna is easily the most effective for this.

Lulu is decent to, but her peeling potential is more suited to single target peel, like assassins.

Dunno, I carry all the time as Soraka. And according to op.gg, Janna has one of the highest winrates in the game.

I think the thing with Poke supports is that your should be strong enough just by getting CDR and Mana Regen. They're a little more spell slinger than most mid laners, (who benefit a little more from Raw AP.)

On my sona Build, I tipically Get Morrelos and Censer for CDR and Mana. While the combined AP isn't that great for a mid laner, I find it plenty, most of the time. Getting Lichbane is only a bonus after that.

I also find the Spell thief upgrades udderly laughable. Since it does not help you A) get more CDR and regen, any more than other items. and b) it's upgrade don't significantly increase your poke potential.

i <3 Sona but sona is prob a bad example, since she is a difficult support in any meta now.... non-tank supports bring the same thing they brought before.... poke, sustain, kill potential.... or if you prefer

kill >sustain >poke>kill

now going back to my fav sona, the poke, sustain, kill potential jack o all trades master of none.....

first off you "farm" by taking spellthief, and poking sona is an "early game" champ for what its worth and to simplify.... not a lv 1 champ imo, but early game.... i think her lv 2 & 3 are her strongest hands down (i take q, w, q) good poke, can destroy hp and cause use of pots, always destroy farm potential for the enemy adc, early backs are common against a sona....

(from a support eyes) what i just described destroys the early lane for an adc... this means if sona and adc are pushing hvy (as sona will do) ur jg is paying attention, not ganking as u dont need but in case a real fight brks out...u have warded rvr, or are a living ward.... or have sight of mini map.... the enemy jg will be coming for you but will get no gank.... just wasted time, maybe a death.... if advantageous ur jg can tp down to get a kill... this means you have not only won ur lane as ur adc is ahead in farm if they can last hit, the enemy adc and support are prob behind in lvs from having to go back early twice (once to heal, again to buy the first back) one or both might have died, and farm will have been denied through threat of poke....

of course this is all null if the enemy counter plays u... but that is not the point of this thread....

what i am saying is that there is a lot more to it... you only see what is right there in front of you but i suggest there is a whole lot more... read, watch vids or streams.... there are tips by the barrel full, but hands down you have not yet figured out all the tricks and things you can do better.... so work on that as do we all....

here is a favorite example of mine....

ur sona, u have been poking the enemy ez, but his dash is keeping him safe.... but ur vayne adc is in afk farm mode...the enemy thresh is cocky and has taken a lot of poke since they have little initial MR, they are going back early to heal and buy... ur ward near drag picked up the enemy jg placing a ward to see movement from bot.... u feel it... u know this is it, u watched them, they way they move... they are going for the power spike...

you got this.... you went back a lil bit ago, u have frostfang.... good mana and hp.... u got this... biscuit and mana pot.... YOU GOT THIS! hide in bot bush, its not warded.... dont poke even when he gets near... its a feint... dont do it... its a freakin tease... dont......

ping ur jg and mid yellow attention, assist me on drag, omw on dragon.... red attention to vayne adc, omw on ez....

FLASH to top bush, move around Ezreal to the tower to cut them off.... Vayne moves in for poke to trade with ez when he goes for the minion...i move out of bush, SLAM him with a Staccato bam bam BAM! an auto power cord, q for 2 magic hits and an empowered auto, exhaust ez, e to get to rvr past ez who is confused and dieing to vayne... w for the shield if ez tosses at me in anger and frustration , doubt he will though since vayne is cleaning him up for the kill... jg and mid have moved towards dragon pit.....

BAM! enemy jg is almost done with dragon smite will be next and then a worth in all chat after we kill him.... no... not today buddy....

ulti onto enemy jg... no smite 4 u! our jg and mid come down kill a dragon, kill a jg, we got a kill on adc, sona dies as she does to enemy vindictiveness, and personally being squishy.... and maybe a full combo to enemy mid that could have been avoided if they left a little bit ago when they were so low freakin health.... but, ya know... whatever...

just sayin... there is soooo much more to a champ than what you might see... so much more to the "support" role than you think.... so much more to the game, if you look past what is on the outside, and see the micro transactions going on in the macro world
