Make Grasp of the Undying melee only

It is frustrating playing top and being melee (like 90% or so of top laners are) just to have a Gnar take 1.5% f your max health as magic damage off of you every 4 seconds without giving you any chance to return the damage since you are melee and they have an escape. Melee vs Range is already difficult, but giving the ranged champions a free heal every 4 seconds is a bit one sided.

Its 1.5% of Gnar's health, not yours. So, on top of already being half as strong for ranged champions, its extra less effective because ranged champions (especially mini-Gnar) have lower base health. Also, if it were melee-only (which would be hard to implement for a mastery), Gnar, the only ranged champion who uses Grasp, would still be able to take it, because hybrid melee/ranged champions are able to use things that are melee or ranged only. (ignore that) Making a mastery melee-only the way items are would be hard to implement with the current system, so the only way would to make it just have no effect at all for ranged champions, which means that your Caitlyn who accidentally took the wrong masteries is even more useless than before. That's not a change that needs to happen when the only ranged champion in the game who consistenly takes Grasp is Gnar.

Gnar takes health items, and it heals for his max health not base (and even if he is mini it still is more or less a free heal every 4 seconds). He would also only be able to use it when mega, not while mini.

I realize it heals for max health. It's still significantly weaker on mini-Gnar than it is on any other top laner. In lane, which is the only time this stuff about ranged vs melee abuse matters, mini-Gnar will still have less maximum HP than any other top laner.

If you want to complain about Gnar, complain about Gnar. No other ranged champions take Grasp, and Gnar takes it because its actually the only keystone which is consistently good on him. Gnar is annoying to play against. I understand that, I've played top lane. There's no reason to make grasp melee only simply because Gnar is abusive to lane against. That's nerfing Zhonya's just because Fizz and Vlad are annoying with it.

If no other ranged champion besides Gnar takes it, what is the issue then? also sure the heal / damage is less for ranged champions, but he has a far better situations for using it repeatedly than any melee champ he is up against simply because he out ranges them by a fair amount. Also, wasn't QSS nerfed basically because Zed's and Fizz's ult were countered by it? Changing something because 1 champion or 2 struggles with or can abuse it is not unheard of.

hybrid melee/ranged champions are able to use things that are melee or ranged only.

They can purchase both melee-only and ranged-only items, but they only take effect when the champion is in the appropriate form.

For example, if I purchased both Runaan's Hurricane and Titanic Hydra on Gnar:

  • Runaan's Hurricane would only apply when I'm in Mini-form
  • Titanic Hydra would only apply when I'm in Mega-form

If Grasp of the Undying was melee-only, he would only be able to proc it in Mega-form.

I understand how those passives work, I just kind of forgot about that when I was writing my post.

While i dont play gnar, and i'm utterly annoyed by gnar top lane. There's no point in splitting a mastery into range/melee when it really only affects a few champions. And while they have/can use them, they usually still use fervor if toplane or Bond/Ages in regards to thresh Gnar Jayce Teemo Urgot Thresh
