What Makes a Rework Bad?

These freaking "Revert" threads are getting on my nerves so i decided to take it upon myself to list what I PERSONALLY THINK makes a rework bad.

  1. Completely changing the champion.

Most reworks, especially ones as of late have been good at not doing this, Ryze maintained his spamming spell master thematic, Warwick actually gained so much in terms of a badass werewolf, Evelynn finally got put into the class she deserved but got 3 of her abilities changed to compensate. Urgot is an exception to this because his previous itteration was kind of all over the place and it didn't really give him a distinct roll or thematic.

Rengar and Leblance's reworks did have this issue, the issue being that Rengar was flat out nerfed forcing him to become a Bruiser instead of an Assassin and Leblance caused her to become a Lock-Down/Kite-Mage instead of an Assassin.

  1. Complete overhaul of a champions Core Thematic. Evelynn is a Succubus, sounds about right. Warwick is a badass Werewolf, nail on the fucking head. Yorick is a devoted badass priest with a will more powerful than steel. Urgot is a mechanized madman with a strong will and an even stronger Shot-Gun Knee Irelia became a person with complete control over her Telekinetic blades, what she was

Like, all of these reworks hit the nail on the goddamn head, they not only expanded on the thematic of them but blew it out of proportion and delivered us something incredible, something that you can really sit there and have so much fun with.

  1. Mini-Reworks

Sometimes their hit's sometimes their misses but a lot of Mini-reworks are misses, and the reason why is just the mechanics that they add, or the things that they change really mess with the way the champion works and causes them to not work how they were intended to, something i think we should keep in mind is that all of these reverts over the last few months, were to Mini-reworks not full VGU's.

Kog'Maw: This one i don't know much about because i wasn't here before his Mini-Rework Rengar: His mini-rework made him into a bruiser, it gave him a really OP tool in his W but to compensate for that he lost so much more Leblance: Her Mini-rework made her a Lock-down/Kite mage, not an assassin and increased her Burst Window by way to much.

Good Mini-Reworks are as follows.

Katarina: Higher Skill Cap, More Opportunities and Overall a more fun kit to play even if it's mechanically much harder. Talon: Thematically fixed him and updated him. Sejuanni, Maokai, Zac: The last of the Class Updates, it made them extremely OP at first but it also made them much more useful and with some tweaks and balancing their in relatively balanced places.

Verdict, Riot already recognized their problem when doing full class updates, full class updates had a tendency to ruin the class as a whole and the first one was the Juggernaut update with champs like Mordekaiser and Skarner. They learned their lesson and Mini-Reworks have become a lot better since then, Full VGU's have almost always hit the nail on the head and should be left alone.

lmao at the tank update

Just as shit as the assassin reworks, all 3 are ultra generalists who are completely unremarkable besides their CC

Kog'Maw: This one i don't know much about because i wasn't here before his Mini-Rework

Imagine Kog with a Guinsoo's, BotRK, Wit's End, Runaan's etc. Imagine him having Lethal Tempo. Now imagine him having both on a relatively short cooldown and hitting 5.00 AS.

I remember the Kog'Maw Rework. They said that one of the reasons why they decided to revert it was because it completely warped Kog'Maw's playstyle.

*Higher mechanical skill cap. In fact, that, and more upfront damage, is the only reason why people call it "good". Nothing else about the mini-rework was good or did anything to solve Katarina's real problems.

But what was his identity before? Like, that's what people don't understand about some of these champions such as Urgot, Galio or Warwick. What was their previous identity and did they have one at all, old galio was an anti-mage--mage with a tank's ultimate, that's it, he was a gargoyle cool. New galio is exactly that, but he has character, personality and a full story to match it with a kit that actually meshes together properly and turns him into what he was SUPPOSED TO BE, instead of the failure that he once was.

I guess it's a matter of opinion. I really liked how mysterious and dark was the old galio, the new one looks almost straight out of a cartoon

According to his identity, yes he was a bit hard to define (an anti-mage mage as you stated) and not a simple "AP tank". You could actually be viable building full AP, wasn't considered a troll pick and was fun to play

I would say the biggest thing is making a champion clunky.

A lot of the reworks you mentioned made the champions more fluid and work better. When you look at the assassins like LB and Rengar, they kept a lot of the same things but they went from smooth af and fun champs to some weird clunky mess.
