We, higher elo players had to deal with auto fill for a year already

RexSaur··33 votes·1,814 views

And everyone here said it was all fine and that you should "just deal with it/learn how to play every role", and now that lower elos have to actually do the same thing they dont stop crying about it, funny isnt it?

"We lower elo players are always criticized for being so bad that higher elo players can make things like ad soraka top work for our entire league life.

but when us lower elo players beat a high elo player in normals they want to cry and say they aren't trying or taking a break from ranked. Funny isn't it."

How is that even relevant. Normals are a NON-COMPETITIVE UNRANKED format. Of course anything from normals can't be taken as proof of anything.

but high ranked players should never lose to the lower players no matter what right?

the high elo players are higher for a reason right?

i mean a plat darius can kill me if i'm let say a support Janna but does that mean he is better than me because he killed me in a fkn normal on an offrole? lol if you are better than me climb that 500lp and be on my level.

There's a reason the most broken champs ever only manage around a 60% winrate. 40% of the time, you or your team will still play bad enough to make that completely broken champion lose. No different with smurfs; sometimes you're just set up to fail.

Not really, it's completely meaningless if they lose in normals. Normals are not a format where the goal is to try-hard. That's what ranked is for.

Also, even in ranked, a higher ranked player can definitely lose lane to a lower ranked one. That doesn't suddenly make the other player superior since it's not like every factor is identical. In fact, you can't even play mirror matchups in a ranked game. Moreover, most players are higher ranked because they understand the game and decision making better not purely due to laning. I've seen Yasuos outlane higher ranked players and then feed their asses off in critical moments without recognizing where to be on the map. That makes all their excellent laning a wasted effort. Being higher ranked is rarely down to just a single thing. It's why I find it so silly when people challenge others to a super simplified 1v1 format which is completely unrealistic and proves nothing beyond that specific 1v1 format itself.

Finally, being higher ranked is just about ONE good or bad game. It's about performance over dozens or hundreds of games. If you play like Faker for one game, then congratulations but if you play like me for the rest of your games, you'll still be ranked low. The truth is that those who deserve to be higher ranked, will be there and usually within 100 games or less. If someone is not, then they have something holding them back, be it consistency, laning, decision-making, champion pool (rarely an issue), itemization, etc. The rest is mostly wishful thinking and excuses.

When you are asked to 1v1, it's implied that you try your best to beat your opponent. Unless you are really that feeble minded you can't even recognize that.

There are some flaws in your argument.

  1. Autofill was only enabled after already being in queue for a bit. If you really wanted to avoid being autofilled, you could just requeue. They did away with that.
  2. Queue length is significantly longer in higher elos generally, so implementing something to try to reduce that makes some sense. Reducing a 40 minute queue to 10-20 minutes has some merit. Reducing a 4 minute queue to 2 minutes is silly.
  3. I've never heard anyone say they actually liked autofill. You had the occasional guy say "just deal with it/learn how to play every role", but in general, most people thought it was a stupid system from the moment it was introduced.
  4. Autofill hasn't been out for a year. It's been about 6 months.

Riot should just do what they initially said they would do and make it optional.

  1. is false, before you even queue (as soon as you join the champ select lobby) you get the auto fill status/warning, which was on at basically all times anywhere above D5 (and even at D5 in lower peak time hours).

This, right here, is why autofill could exist in high elos but not in low elos.

I would also like to add that, with all the dodging happening in games because someone got autofilled, the queue time is actually longer than before autofill.

drakuIa4211 votes

This.

My problem with autofill is not that I have to play support, it's that people that are not support mains get autofilled to support and then they troll or dodge.

I just had a game where the support picked vayne, took heal, started doran's ring and played like an adc.

They said you would be able to select your worst role and you would never be filled to that. They also said that solo players would never get autofilled in flex queue. Can't remember where I read it but doesn't really matter

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

They tested Role Exclusion and decided not to implement it.

In truly shocking new, most people just excluded support.

When your a support main so autofill is like a godsend, 3 opportunities for support? Sweet! (Support, fill, autofill)

Supreme Senpai691 votes

If you support/fill you'll end up jungle or top lane. I do support/mid so that I always get support. The 1/100 game I get mid someone dodges anyway, or I can ask to trade since everyone wants mid. Or I can just play my same champions that I play as support (Veigar, Lux, Zyra, etc.)

Miror B2 votes

I actually find it adorable when people bitch and complain about being autofilled (especially since I started doing fill-only flex games to "Try out the system" ). If you can't play more than one role/character, then you shouldn't be allowed to complain about it.

MrWasjig1 votes

So what about if you can only play say....2 roles? Like the system ostensibly allows you to queue as? And why do we need autofill in Bronze? Which I'll remind you, has the most players anywhere in the Ranked playerbase.

Civet101 votes

I can play anything but jungle fairly well, that doesnt mean that i have to like being autofilled.... If you want to win then you want to play your best roles.

Epicanian2 votes

Yeah, but in higher elo queue times are actually a problem. Not in low elo, so there's no point

MrWasjig2 votes

Difference being that autofill has no purpose in lower ELOs due to the higher player populations. It was put in place in higher ELOs because of the lower player density leading to absurdly long queue times, so it made sense to alleviate that.

It doesn't make sense putting it in place in every ELO however, for fuck sake it's enabled in Bronze! The most populace ELO in the entire Ranked playerbase! Why the hell does Bronze need autofill? Trick question, it doesn't.

The whole "We need autofill in all ELOs to alleviate queue times" is a non-issue below say...I dunno perhaps Diamond, possibly Plat. It's like Riot wanted to justify the purchase of a seeing-eye dog so they gouged their own eyes out. It's not needed, it's silly.

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

Having a higher population doesn't mean that they don't need autofill.

You could have 100,000 or 100,000,000 players in a pool, but it won't exactly help if only 10% of them pick support.

While I think it is a stupid system and I dislike it, I can understand why they implemented it.

MrWasjig1 votes

I agree it's a necessary evil but I still stand by my point.

But let's say we put my point aside....all the time? I mean, autofill all the time? Surely we don't need it all the damn time, especially in the lower ELOs. Yeah I know it claims "There is a role shortage" but that's just a generic message not indicative of anything, because it's turned on all the time anyway regardless of role shortages or not.

Personally, and I've heard plenty of others say this, I'd rather have a quality match (so the role I chose) with a fair skill matchup and put up with a few extra minutes wait rather than get shunted into a role I don't like with a group of champions I'm not particularly good at. Bearing in mind I'm in Gold which still has a decent population so queue times wouldn't get to the absurd 45 minute times seen in Diamond last year. But think of every single game, where in most, if not all of your team has been shunted into a role they can't play very well. Fair enough you can ask to swap but not everyone is co-operative enough to do so.

My biggest issue with the "Autofill is on, all of the time, in every draft queue!" problem is that is completely nullifies the benefits afforded to us by the role select feature. It's like Riot wanted to try and tick every possible box of quality matches, fair matches, and quick matchmaking but couldn't quite tick them all, so they made a compromise that made it look as if they did without actually doing so. Ultimately what we're left with is quick and fair matches, but not quality matches (by fair I mean equally skilled, and by quality I mean everyone or almost everyone gets their desired role). I would have said go for one or the other between quick queue times or quality matches rather than trying, and failing to do both. Because in trying please everyone all that does is give your sore wrists and a very dry face...

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

Honestly, I haven't seen autofill not be enabled for months at this point.

I'm pretty much resigned to it. While I agree that I would prefer higher quality matches rather than shorter queue time (since I just read or watch videos during them anyways), I'm not optimistic.

MrWasjig1 votes

Neither am I but I don't think my points are particularly unreasonable regardless. It would just be nice for Riot to not be so bullheaded with some decisions :P

LiveYiOrDieHard2 votes

Autofill is the worst of both worlds. Queue times are still at least double what they were pre-role-selection, but with even less teamwork in champ select than pre-role-selection.

Not saying i dont agree with this, i always liked old champ select better tbh (specially since autofill kills the only point of the new champ select).

High ELO players have longer queue times because there is a smaller pool of players to pull from. Lower ELO players have short queue times because the pool of players is much larger. Autofill is cutting anywhere from 30 seconds - 2 minutes off of queue times for low ELO players. How is saving, at most, 2 minutes and getting stuck in a role you didn't want better than waiting 2 more minutes to guarantee a role you DID want?

When games are in the area of 20-60 minutes, I think people would gladly wait the extra few seconds/minutes required to get a role they can enjoy playing for that 20-60 minute game.
