PSA to Riot, human reaction time

SwiftKitten88··8 votes·4,172 views

the average human reaction time to visual stimuli is .215 seconds

OR 215 ms

that is how long it takes A HUMAN BRAIN to react

some of the best in the world have 100 ms reaction time

https://www.humanbenchmark.com/tests/reactiontime/

test it for yourself and see what yours is. ( works best with a 1 ms response time monitor for obvious reasons)

now most things in the game have a visual warning.

on top of that... u have ping.. which averages between 35 if u have fantastic ping... and 80 if u have bad ping ( in NA)

(obviously korea has like 8 ms ping because they are a small country on fiber)

so u can add that on top of your reaction time.

now... keep this in mind that IF SOMEONE CAN KILL U IN .5 SECONDS

THATS 500 MS

now ask yourself how much if that is already being taken up by ping and your reaction time and how much is left for u to move your mouse to the correct location and do something like dash or summoner 4

THIS is why "frontloaded burst" is an issue

also... post your data because im generally curious

(my average was 278)

badly coded page.

yeah if people in EU west are getting 1.5k + then it actually goes back to the web server and is not using javascript properly. that IS bad coding...

Anyone know a better site? i thought mine was kinda high..

Here I just coded this up real quick and uploaded it to this htmlpasta site. It tests using pure JavaScript.

edit: I think the one in the OP is fine and is not ping dependent tbh.

i could code you guys a tool to do this accurately in about 30 seconds.

G0blinSlay3r2 votes
  1. Did you code that?
  2. You are fixated on the wrong idea.
  3. I can code 27 languages including pure machine in ASM on x86, arm, avr and pic.
  4. A process is does not have to run separately from a application
  5. all you have done is call me a liar.

So your saying the browser does not handle the work and is not coded with efficiency VS speed? Because you have not explained a thing.

async.. is not perfect.

That's unbelievably impressive! Many respects to you, man.

[slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

(I once downloaded the documentation for the x86 architecture just to see, took about a 7 second look at it and decided, nope, for me it's not worth investing time in it.)

You don't take into account how there is at least some degree of telegraphing in situations where a flash or dash is a reasonable option to get away. If you get jumped in a manner where you never saw the enemy until they were right on top of you, whatever happens is on you for putting yourself in that tactical situation.

my ping is 220.... my react time 280 to 360 btw that websites timer is coded badly.

its obfuscated so how can you tell? what did they do wrong specifically?

because a web browser has a huge delay due to java not being a high speed hyper accurate language for timing sensitive processes . that delay is already +- 100

Khristophoros1 votes

Sorry you have no idea what you're talking about at all. Like completely.

  1. It is not Java. It is JavaScript. They are different languages with similar names. Java for web browser has not been in use for years.

  2. Java is a fast language (but it's not used in web browsers so I'll leave it at that)

  3. JavaScript is "slow" by programming language standards. This means absolutely nothing for this case though. Current hardware is so fast that even a slow language like JS can easily measure timing below 1ms even on a cheap computer. The performance problems of JavaScript only come into play for larger applications. To give you an example, doing something as simple as comparing the current timing of an event to another event would only take a few nanoseconds in a C program. In a JS script it takes something like a few microseconds instead. It is a large percentage difference, but still far below 1ms.

Ok so, the only actual problem with using JS in the browser for this is that it uses an async system that we cannot control. It may add something in the order of 1-5 ms depending on which browser you use, because the way each browser implements async operations is different. However like I said the added delay will only be in the order of 1-5 ms, and most likely under 1ms tbh.

Fun fact: JS in web browsers used to be able to measure performance down to timings far below 1ms, but this was removed intentionally because the spectre vulnerability relies on high resolution timing. So this vulnerability was patched in browsers by reducing the resolution of the timing functions in JS. However, it still measures timings with a 1ms resolution, so for this use case it is fine.

TLDR; You guys on these boards pretending you know shit about programming need to stop.

G0blinSlay3r1 votes

Was trying to keep it noob friendly without writing all that.

Also java and java script may be different but both still rely on the same web browser interface.

Because all i would have to say it "that delta timer is trash" but only a few would understand what that means.

And no using a browser to show that kind of timing is bad.

That's why games in browsers make use of higher level code where essentially the browser is nothing more than a window showing the data from another process. <this can be accurate.

In the end browsers and java script are not accurate for this due to several different factors -1ms is hardly correct.

Khristophoros1 votes

You are completely wrong. Java does not rely on the browser. Like I said, it has not been used in web browsers for years.

The only significant bottleneck in this type of application is the thread wakeup time which is operating system controlled, and it is usually around 1ms or so. This is going to be there in any application regardless of JS in browser or C++ or whatever you want, as long as the implementation relies on thread sleep, you are looking at another 1ms or so. Any other overhead you get from the browser is going to be negligible in this use case.

i know that... geez... you sound like my dad trying to teach me to solder.

and i promise you this it's not as accurate or as reactive as you think.

also java script runs thru the browser. but not java.

You said it yourself, java and java script are not the same, java script's interpreter is built into most browsers, java script is not timing sensitive as that accuracy is kept for other programing languages.

Browsers are not magic, there is no instant reaction even when running the code locally.

unfortunately it's not accurate because browsers interpreters are not built to be that accurate and fast, they are built to be efficient.

This is why HTML5, JAVA, ect have dedicated processes that handle those tasks.

You ask me to submit proof.. i need none. i also don't need you calling me a liar.

I can also make mistakes.. i am human. where is your humanity?

Khristophoros1 votes

JS may be slow but it is not slow enough to matter for this case. It easily measures timing at the 1ms time resolution. In fact this is not a programming language issue, which is something I've been trying to explain to you. This is purely an issue of how the browser's async callbacks may be implemented. It most likely has a 1ms or so added from operating system thread wakeup time. This same delay would also be present in a native application if it was relying on thread sleeps. I've told you this like 2 times already but you don't understand what I'm talking about.

There is one issue I can think of. The browser's rendering engine may take a few ms to update the color when it changes. This is not a problem as long as the JS code only starts the timer after the color has been changed.

Anyway there is like a 1ms or so added to the reaction time, it is like a 0.5% or less inaccuracy for average human reaction times so it doesn't matter. Even if somebody has extremely fast reaction times of like 100ms we're talking about a 1% inaccuracy.

Additional thing to address:

This is why HTML5, JAVA, ect have dedicated processes that handle those tasks.

First of all you messed up your terminology. A "process" is a separate program. Perhaps you mean a dedicated function for performance profiling, which is true. All programming languages have functions specifically for this. HTML5 does not have these because it's not a programming language. JavaScript has them.

Anyway I am gonna have to stop posting in this thread because I got moderated for calling you a liar. I am really tired of people like you claiming to know about programming and making posts like "that thing sucks and is badly coded" when you actually have no idea what you are talking about. To me that is being a jerk, but apparently I'm a jerk for calling you out on it. Peace.

hardware shouldnt matter, much, but location sure as hell does as demonstrated by the EU west members. i agree this site was very badly coded, i should have done more research into a better site. i feel bad

most monitors used for gaming have a 1 ms response times,( assumiong u did your research when u bought your monitor) non gaming monitors can have up to a 6 ms response time

it will hardly make a difference for the purposes of this test, what will make a difference is getting a better ping site test as i obviously found an awful one

Anyone here watch/read Hunter x Hunter?

Basically, y'all need the kind of speed, reflex and reaction time of Isaac Netero had to play League.

Damn, I would pay for a 1v1 League match between Faker and Netero.

........

This is a complaint that I've had with League as well. Between the innate base amount of time a human needs just to REACT ON REFLEX to the stimulus, the game's ping, and the incredibly short TTK (time-to-kill) in League, there is nearly no room for a player to actually deflect an incoming assault because you often really don't have the time to press the necessary buttons needed to resolve the situation even just on reflex (as there are often more buttons than 1 and in specific order), let alone the time needed for the brain to STRATEGISE against any incoming encounter.

This game needs higher TTK, that is simply insane how short the game's TTK even is especially given the genre is supposed to be about strategy even though the current TTK doesn't even have enough time for reflex let alone time to actually think.

I managed to get a 13 ms reaction time, by clicking the box the moment i thought the screen would turn green. so with luck you can have amazing reaction time:P

Back on Topic!

I personally play with a 220 ping everyday, My reaction time does affect my ability but this is true for any person.
