Why are so few people playing Garen?

He's really good right now especially after his E buff and the lethality buff

I like Garen but he's not a champ that can carry feeders, even if he is fed due to some key weaknesses. This game has far too much feeders to trust in champs like Garen. That's why people play broken shit like Jayce and Yasuo who have nearly no weaknesses.

His kit looks pretty linear and not interesting at all.

That's why I don't play him at least. I'm sure he's good but I'd rather use a champion with a kit that interests me.

As a fighter others do more damage and as a tank others can take more damage and offer way more cc. Garen can do well as long as he stays ahead but falls off hard becoming a walking meat sack if he falls behind.

He is considered a noob/unskilled champ. People don't realize how much the e buff helped him. Darius still wrecks him. He's not as tanky as maokai or nautilus or poppy if you build black cleaver. Like udyr, his only "gapcloser" is running really fast at the enemy team with q. This makes him somewhat more easily kited by good players and coordinated teams.

Tbh Garen doesn't even lose to darius now if he plays well, the nerfs to darius' axe and passive in early levels means that if you just Q inside his blade and spin with W you win trades up to 6, and after that you win because your ulti is a stronger execute. As someone who mains both champions I got a rude awakening losing a lvl 1 1v1 to a Garen with W skilled after the nerfs. Garen is busted now.

*Edit to clarify busted in laning vs melee champs. There's no one who can trade against him and win any longer, Garen is the new Darius in laning phase.

Garen is good yeah, but I do believe a darius should go even at minimum once he adjusts to garen's changes. You don't spam q as darius vs a garen unless you are ahead and tagging garen when he goes in for cs. You prime your w to slow garen when he q's at you -- doing decent damage and slowing garen since he used his slow removal to engage you. Then you kite back on his spin -- keeping at the edge of it or outside of it and trading autos to stack your passive (if you can't stay outside spin range). Garen either commits to keeping his spin damage on you or backs off. If he commits, you should be able to land a quick pull, q combo after silence ends... which garen cannot dodge because his q is on cd, he is slowed, and he had commited to walking at you with his "spin to win". Thus you land your q to heal you, you stack your passive nicely, and he has probably tanked minion agro from following you into your minion wave.

The lethality buffs helped a lot of champions. Garen got a love tap compared to the godlike buffs champs like Jayce and MF received. He's small potatoes, even with his lethality build.

even some of the more popular streamers and youtubers picked him up.

Because he's a bit lackluster and the whole out of combat regen makes him a bit weaker once fights start to break. Out of Combat regen is much stronger in the early game, but he has almost none of that early on. Once it becomes truly noticeable (mid game) you could already have a Warmogs and achieve the same effect.
