Veigar on a post-DFG Rift?

It sounds like they'll be making changes to Veigar to accompany the removal of DFG. That makes sense. It might even be enough to get Veigar some attention at last. But I think we need to be very careful what we wish for. Veigar's charm comes from an old-school design aesthetic that was more okay with Champions having really agonizing weaknesses and really awesome strengths. That charm probably would not survive a rework.
DFG is core on Veigar
Just to begin with the obvious: DFG is really important on Veigar. A few reasons why:
- Completing DFG is often Veigar's first chance to turn the tables on the enemy mid, at least if they aren't building MR. It is deliciously gratifying to go from being bullied out of lane to FWOOSH! obliterating that overconfident enemy laner.
- DFG lets Veigar burst a target down without committing his full rotation. This means that, if you play your cards right, you can both use your stun and meteor to help your team win the fight and still have enough FWOOOSH left to deal with the enemy mage if you catch them out of position.
- Veigar is an all-or-nothing Champion. In a 1v1 encounter, Veigar either blows the enemy to bits or gets eaten alive. DFG makes the former possible.
So, he's going to need some pretty hefty buffs to compensate him.
Removing DFG isn't necessarily a bad thing
I'll be glad to be able to have more variety in my itemization. Right now, rushing DFG is really the only viable option. And LoL does suffer from input lag issues sometimes, so having another key to press is kind of a nuisance.
But that all depends on how much and in what ways he's buffed to compensate. That's the difficult part.
Why I'm wary of a rework
They could buff Veigar without reworking him, though it would have to be a pretty large numbers buff. (DFG adds a LOT of damage.) My concern is that Riot's designers will take this as an opportunity for a rework, and I don't think that would be a good thing for Veigar, unless they brought Coronach back or something.
Veigar's an old-style Champion with really flavorful gameplay. I cringe at the thought of what a superficial assessment of his kit would bring, though. For example, I have a bad feeling that they'll decide that his ult scaling in part on enemy AP is "punishing success". In reality, I would argue, that feature of his ult punishes the combination of success, arrogance, and error. It hits hard only if the enemy not only succeeds in lane but then goes on to build glass cannon, and in turn gets out of position. Then, if Veigar picks up on this mistake, he can punish them hard for both their mispositioning and their arrogant glass-cannon build. That seems fair. This also helps highlight a particular enemy squishy for Veigar to stalk, and rewards him for setting up a kill on that particular target. And, of course, it's thematically appropriate that the vengeful little fuzzball would do extra damage to the mage who smacked him around during lanephase.
So which will it be?
Riot's not dumb. It's entirely possible that they'll find a way to retain Veigar's quirky, evil charm, or even enhance it. But I have to say, if you made me put money down one way or the other, I'd have to wager that it's more likely that Veigar will come out of this less exciting and less distinctive.
