Are playstyles important?

I have a friend of mine who's completely against players having a certain 'playstyle'

here's a few tidbits that he used to make points while discussing it with him, how do others feel about it?

the general gist of it is him

consistency and using that to improve upon what you already know, is in itself improvement

he disagrees with this because you aren't actually really learning anything, and that having a playstyle is very limiting to what you can do.

of course this game is all about adaptation, but there's still no denying even some of the best players have their own playstyles that mean something

Well, what's your own opinion on this?

Playstyles come with both good and bad. I am a very safe player, I don't generally take big risks. I am rarely going to be making those big crazy plays or win the game by taking a big gamble and having it pay off. However I am a very consistent player. I am comfortable with the fact that as say, Ahri or Veigar, I might not always win the lane, but as the game progresses I will be able to stay relevant enough for my experience on them to start paying off little by little. I will slowly pick up kills and do small things to help my team win, this is something I can do even when behind.

In that regard I am a very strong player. I don't know many others around my elo who are as good as me as consistently performing well, especially on champs they are not overly familiar with. Picking up new champs and playing consistently are two very big skills of mine.

That being said it comes with weaknesses too. I don't take ignite. I am just not aggressive enough to ever use it. I prefer taking TP, even on champs like Ahri. I am also not very good at actions that take a lot of mechanical skill to pull off. The way I am means that I am never quite comfortable flash charming someone, despite Ahri being the champion I learned to play League on and still frequently play to this day. I hesitate a lot. I am good at gauging fights but I base my knowledge off of saying, ok I can expect to hit this much and I am assuming they will hit everything. I don't make those risky plays where you juke half the enemy kit because I never go for those plays, and as such have no experience doing those kinds of things.

I am not good at being aggressive, and I am not good at using my power if I am fed. I have MANY MANY games where all my lanes lost and I am sitting there 16/4/X. I am just not good at those kinda of things.

Those are some pretty big weaknesses. However I also have a bunch of strengths. You see challenger players play a new champ for the first time and do pretty crap, not really getting their skillshot ranges or aoes down. I don't really have that issue. I can pick up a champ for the first time and mechanically play it just as well as any champ I have a decent amount of practice on. I grow by knowing how much a champ can do and take, not by how perfectly you can execute a kit. As such I have a low mechanical skill but a lot of game knowledge. I can consistently perform well because damage rarely surprises me. The number of fights I take and lose are very rare, because I don't take risky fights if I can help it.

In comparison someone who doesn't have a set style won't have those weaknesses, but they also wont have those strengths. They might not feel comfortable picking up a champ they played 3 times before because it fits the team comp. They will probably have more erratic scores, and they probably will take more fights and not stat check until they start fighting, rather than knowing off the top of their head how the damage is going to go.

As long as you're willing to adapt to any form of changes (reworks, nerfs/buffs, etc) and that you can make them work, then not really.

For instance, I hated Lulu mid/top because you are only play half of a champion, while as support you play 3/4ths of a champion. It's like, taking a Swiss Army knife and only using the scissors and the blade itself. But they work, and hell, are "meta". Does it matter on what I think? No, because it's different playstyle.

Okay, fine, maybe the last sentence doesn't make any sense, but as long as it works and that they are flexible, it doesn't really matter.
