Do items or runes affect your playstyle more?

Like the title says, does the items you buy or the runes you go with influence your gameplay the most?

Back in older seasons before runes reforged, items heavily influenced how your champion played. You could have bad runes but if you had good items late game, the runes and masteries have less relevance. I'm not saying runes and masteries didn't really affect you late game, but they didn't affect you as much as items did. But now, both affect your performance but I feel like runes just have a bigger affect now. If you happen to have the wrong runes now, you are more likely to get destroyed late game. Example would be like if you are ashe with aery by accident, you just don't really have the fire power you would with other runes no matter what you buy. You can buy infinity edge and other items but you just won't be able to perform that well late game with aery.

Before runes reforge, around season 3, runes and masteries affected how you play early most often to help you get the items you need to scale into late game, unless you were running runes that scale with your level. But you could have all ap runes as ashe by accident but still carry late game with full build. The gap wouldn't be that much farther apart because items affected champs way more than runes did.

For me it's items. I'll use my main as an example.

Diana plays either bursty (overkill oneshot) with items like spellbinder deathcap void zhonyas and oblviion orb.

She can also play bruiser (sustained damage, still high oneshot later) with items like roa, nashors, deathcap, zhonyas, and void staff.

I use the exact same runes, but I can feel the presence of a different champion when I use the bruiser build.

It's true runes have created a feeling of being more optimized though, which I think is okay for the most part. Both items and runes impact you and how you approach each game.

Of course it's items. Yes you are a bit weaker with terrible runes compared to correct items + correct runes. But you haven't seen how incredibly useless an ap + tank ashe is.
