Why can only 15% of Mids get Zhonya's? I'm pretty sure almost every AP Mid can build Zhonya's and profit from it.

Banshee's build path is fine you have . Each of these can be bought in parts or for at most 850 gold INCLUDING the combine cost. Aside from that if you WANT defense, you should be willing to sacrifice some amount of offense. The shield is good for surviving all ins vs a plethora of burst mages and assassins.

Zhonya is a staple item that scales exponentially with how good you are as a player. Kind of like Move speed.

I'll let you make an argument that a number of these champs (in particular the predominantly top lane champs) shouldn't be counted as "mid lane" but these items still see a large number of play across multiple roles and champions. They don't see play on EVERY mid laner, but isn't that the whole point of having a wide slew of options? Item diversity to fit the situation you need?

If I'm against a comp like You can bet your ass as a mid laner I'm picking up some MR and tank items like Rylais + Liandrys, Mask, or Banshees.

...no, the roster of AP champions that can use Abyssal mask is not limited to three champions.

Any magic damage champion who wants to be within 700 range of the enemy team can buy abyssal mask.

These champions can all buy it situationally. Even artillery champions can use it for the durability in a pinch.

The only magic damage champion I would never build it on is

waste the mana, making it less efficient, but that durability combined with 10% damage amp is good on these champs.

I am now the front line. Sure you sacrifice damage, but you get so much sustainability in a fight that you can put out equal if not MORE damage.

The only people who should be building pure AP are people who have super long range keeping them out of the fight, and people with absolutely ludicrous AP scalings.
