Is using ARAMs to find new champs a bad idea?

I generally do this during preseason. Play lots of ARAMs and hope to find a champion I enjoy, then start practicing them in normals.

I think it's good because I don't get flamed for practicing a new champion in ARAMs. I try a variety of stuff and you never know what will click. However it's also bad because ARAM is not Summoners Rift. Some champs are just too strong in ARAMs and it may end up making me pick up champions and think I'm okay on them, when in reality I'm terrible on them on summoner's rift.

Is there anything I can do to get a better idea of whether I'm clicking with a champion, or if it's just OP or I just had a good team in the ARAM?

e.g. I've played a few games of Gragas in ARAMs that have generally gone well and I've enjoyed. I'm also building him tank, not full AP like most do in ARAMs.

You're discussing micro vs macro play, and mechanics vs strategy. By no means is it a bad thing to practice champions in aram but you're only going to learn their mechanics. On the flip side, you won't learn anything about macro play.

There's a few exceptions (ie roaming mids - kat, a sol; junglers) but for the most part the practice well help regardless of map.

as alrdy mentioned, you might learn stuff about the champ, but in summoners rift its still different.
