Teemo's shrooms apply a DoT effect to the champion when they detonate which will apply damage over the duration at set intervals.

Morgana's pool deals ticks of damage to people within it at set intervals, where each tick is considered a separate instance of damage.

Another example would be how each tick of Swain's Q will count as a separate spell for the purpose of Thunderlord's Decree while his E will only count as one spell for the same reasons as above.

Not that I've noticed. o.O

I've never see it do so.

It doesn't. Thats why you never see Malz run Thunderlords, unless they are bad.

I wish TLD was normalized.

Some champions have to sweat to proc it, while others do it with one auto attack (Ekko), because Luden counts as a spell too (wtf anyway?)

TLD is normalized, the problem is that not everyone understand how every ability works for it. For example ekko e is both an aa and a spell (so apply both on-hit and spell effects) that's why with luden's (i'm not sure about lichbane) auto proc thunderlord

I do understand that.

The problem is, TLD is suppose to boost damage of combo-oriented playstyles.

There is no combo when Ekko presses E or Morgana presses W.

Neither 3 auto attack but they still work. I agree but i can't think about a meaningfull solution

Well first of all I'd make Luden's proc not count as a spell.
